It's Snowing!

We got about 12-15 inches here in this part of Maryland. Just got in from spending 2 1/2 hours nonstop shoveling snow. Unfortuantely I broke my snow shovel last year while shoveling the neighbors... and didnt expect to have a significant snow yet... so I had to use the regular dirt digging shovel. Made it a bit tougher but got it done. I hear that another big snow storm is headed toward the east coast about the middle of next week. Sounds like it might be an interesting winter.

Hi, Bob...hope all is well.

Now, you had better sit down for the shocking news I am about to post...

Had a meeting in Kearny, NJ last Thursday. Stopped for lunch at a plaza on the NJ Turnpike and could not believe my eyes: "A Hummer pulled in next to me and it was actually covered with mud". I am quite certain you are probably stunned by now, Bob.

What's this world coming to???

They are predicting 12-20" storm total here in NJ. (about 20 miles west of New York City) So far we have about 14" and it is still snowing.

Interesting thing about SUV's and the snow, in listening to the traffic reports, about 75% of the incidents involve SUV's???? When will these people learn that even though you sometimes go better, it takes you longer to stop.

You are not invincible, please share the road responsibly!

Wonderful sentiment, Greg! And very true! SUXs...eh...SUVs are not necessarily good in snow just because they are large, and powerful. I would take my '77 Eldorado against one any day of the week in snow. But most of all...it is technique and driving ettiquette that wins the day when driving, whether snow ladden or dry! Please be careful, safe and well mannered out there!

Leo ~ Was that measurement taken by one of your fellow Swedes with a tape brought over from the old country. confused.gif Those marks look suspiciously like millimeters and not inches, smirk.gif since they only go up to 10 and then repeat. In that case the snow is only about 8" deep, so tell him to get in to work. grin.gif ~ hvs

Howard, It's cold when I have to put a coat on. It's "real" cold when I have to run form my "heated" car to the "heated" house to keep warm. Whimpy? Yes, that's me and darn proud of it. If I liked cold weather I'd be out west with you. Wayne

Been mild out here all fall. Haven't seen the thermometer below -1 all season. smile.gif Judy and I keep the outside door in our bedroom open about 3" to keep the room cool. Thursday morning it was a nippy 52 in the room. Gets you up and out real quick. smirk.gifgrin.gif ~ hvs

But it's the cleanest air in the nation. cool.gifsmile.gif H

Besides having a ton of snow here, the wind is blowing like mad....I went out twice so far to use the snow blower and it's like a blizzard. I look like a snowman when I'm finished! Snow, you can keep it! mad.gif

Had a good dusting of it here Wednesday night, and the Friday paper's lead story was a picture of a 4wd Tahoe upside down in the ditch. Witness said "he was having a hard time in the stuff just before he wrecked". Probably still had it in 2H.

It'll be interesting to see how this AWD Smart Trak Bravada does in the stuff. Not that I want any to try it out in, you understand.

Wayne, I work with a guy who puts on long johns if the temp drops to 60 degrees.

Skyking, two winters ago Sears had a snowblower on display. Lot of people got a big laugh off it, since we rarely get enough snow to use one. But do you know that somebody bought the thing?

Wayne, I tried moving south in 94, did it for 3 years, (Florida). The wife dragged me back......I have 4 grandkids now & I guess she was right! Maybe someday I'll return...

Rocket, about the snowblower, "you build it & they will buy it"... shocked.gif

Hi, Bill...hope all is well.

Here in Reading, PA, it is currently 27 degrees outside with a wind-chill factor making it about 19 degrees. Have about 8-10" of snow on the ground from yesterday. Thermostat is set at 68 degrees.

Oh! Oh!, forgot something guys. I had to go shopping again today(I hate shopping, "I" don't need anything else ), and I found some new really cheap wrapping paper. Yes, It seems the local grocery store(Food Lion) now has Santa's picture on all their shopping bags. Hot Dog! I'm saving money this year. Last year my family was really aggravated with me that all their presents were in just plain brown wrapping paper! Wayne

Bill I can't believe your wife wants it warmer than 72*. My wife complains when I raise the thermostat from 64 to 66.I'm always freezing and she's always warm. When I go out in the garage I get it nice and toasty. Today the wind was still blowing like crazy. There was alot of drifting. I was going to take a photo today but the digital cameras batteries were dead. frown.gif

Sky...my ex had to have the heat at 75. It was abominable!! I keep my house at 68 and leave a door or window open. Loving the cold and living in Colorado makes sense!!

But if the population out here keeps growing, I may have to move north to Wyoming or Montana. It's starting to look like New Jersey around here!!!

(Love New Jersey...not a slam. Spent some of my best years on the salt barrens and roaming through the country side. Just too many dern people!!!)

Randall, I don't know anything about your tax rates out west, but I'll tell you that everybody that can are leaving New Jersey in droves and moving south to escape their tax burden. Reminds me of the people that left Texas years ago and just called their loan collateral holder from another state to tell them that they had left the house key in their door, do what they will with it. W.

Randall,

New Jersey is a great place to live, why else would people be clamoring

to spend a half million dollars for a starter house?

And yes, it is TOO CROWDED!!!! To the many New York City residents who are moving here, there is lots of room (compared to the city). As long as there are jobs here and in NYC, it will be crowded.

My wife is in the garment industry, the hub of which is in New York City.

We have a train station in town, so the commute is moderately easy. We are close enough, but also far enough away!

My wife actually takes the bus, even though the train in town is what attracts many New York transplants. Her door to door time on a good day is about 1 hour. Unfortunately, there are not too many good days, traffic wise. Average transit time is 75 minutes. It is usually nap time.......

As far as 9-11 affecting the trip, not really. Early on they had checkpoints at the Lincoln Tunnel which delayed things a bit.

In extreme circumstances, such as last Friday's snowfall, the trip took 3-1/2 hours. (on 9-11, she did not get home until 5PM the next day)

Greg, I don't guess that's too bad. I travel through Northern Virginia occasionally and wonder how those people put up with the traffic jams every day, and I mean every day. The bus might be ok, but what changes were made at the train stations to keep the "bad guys" off. I think of all the bombing going on in Israel, and wonder how we're dealing with it. Wayne

Reminds me of when we lived outside of Philly...in Langhorne, PA. Dad would commute into Philadelphia on the train to Temple where he taught. We thought nothing of riding the Pennsylvania RR into Philly or up to New York City for a day. It was a great way to get around.

I hated driving down the Sure-kill Expressway...Route 1 was a total loss too...but I managed and thought nothing of it.

Speaking of snow....it is snowing here and is beautiful. Temperature is at 32 degrees and everything is turning white. I have my window open for the wonderful fresh air!

I love winter!!!!

Wayne, For the record not all of New Jersey smells like a pile of burning tires, and there are some lovely rural areas. New Jerseys gift to the world was the Mercer Raecabout. Got my first speeding ticket in Jersey on my way home from an AACA swap meet years ago.
