1954 Mercury Sun Valley - $35,500

Recommended Posts

I don't know about the price, but it certainly is a nice example of an interesting car! As a college student, the paper boy drove one of these. I bet not many college students get a newspaper these days....   more pics in ad

This restored 1954 Mercury Monterey Sun Valley is a numbers matching vehicle with excellent paint and like new interior. It has the 256 cu in V8 with Merc-0-Matic auto transmission. It has just under 4000 miles since the restoration. It has power brakes and standard steering. It runs, drives and stops like a new car. No disappointments here. Sharp !

Makes me think back to my 1954 Mercury convertible,

loaded with every conceivable option they offered,

plus the sand shooters for the back tires when on ice or snow

The plexiglass tops on the Sun Valleys and Skyliners are quite prone to hair line cracks and hazing particularly at the curved edges, most visible from inside the car. Replacements run nearly $1,400. plus special shipping, plus new rubber seals and installation.

Total cost of purchasing and installing would be in the range of $2,000.

Nit, nit, nit... outer headlight rings should be body color - not chrome, and the valve covers painted.

These are great looking cars. I had a 53 Sunliner convertible that had a lot of similarities to it. I have a soft spot for these because my father-in-law had one when he was 18, courting his then girlfriend, my current mother-in-law. He said he would spend the whole day prepping my car to go pick her up for a date. I always thought we might get one for him as a surprise. The one thing he did say though was the August summer days in Oklahoma with that glass top, made the inside about 130 degrees.

Great that you can get replacement for that acrylic top! Given the special nature and the size, two grand seems a bargain! Also, it's hardly surprising 60 year old plastic in a location that gets a lot of sun would have problems!

I bought and sold my two tone green Sun Valley (similar to the one below) in the early '70's after the brakes failed and my girlfriend (now wife of 48 years) ran it through the roll-up garage door. She was a keeper, the Merc wasn't.

Agreed.  Which is why they did not take off as a hybrid to a convertible. If I owned one, I would create a vinyl piece for the inside.  Attach using Velcro. Discreet.  Use it during hot months.  Remove at car show.

Mercury offered a snap-on interior shade for high summer.

Actually Ford used a snap in cover, Mercury had a zip in cover.  😉
