Leif in Calif
I don't know about the price, but it certainly is a nice example of an interesting car! As a college student, the paper boy drove one of these. I bet not many college students get a newspaper these days.... more pics in ad https://bend.craigslist.org/cto/d/smith-river-1954-mercury-sun-valley/7696818723.html This restored 1954 Mercury Monterey Sun Valley is a numbers matching vehicle with excellent paint and like new interior. It has the 256 cu in V8 with Merc-0-Matic auto transmission. It has just under 4000 miles since the restoration. It has power brakes and standard steering. It runs, drives and stops like a new car. No disappointments here. More information and pictures on request. Asking $35,500 (541) 661-5182
JamesR
Great car. I love '54 Skyliners, too, but the Sun Valley really was a cut above the Ford, at least in some of the styling flourishes. The steering column control panel screams, "I'm an airline pilot!" 😄
TerryB
I really like this car! Don’t think Santa will bring it for me but it never hurts to ask😀.
DrumBob
That's an awesome car. I think $35.5K is a lot for it though.
Marty Roth
Sharp ! Makes me think back to my 1954 Mercury convertible, loaded with every conceivable option they offered, plus the sand shooters for the back tires when on ice or snow
Twisted Shifter
The plexiglass tops on the Sun Valleys and Skyliners are quite prone to hair line cracks and hazing particularly at the curved edges, most visible from inside the car. Replacements run nearly $1,400. plus special shipping, plus new rubber seals and installation. Total cost of purchasing and installing would be in the range of $2,000. Nit, nit, nit... outer headlight rings should be body color - not chrome, and the valve covers painted. 2
B Jake Moran
There is a basket case Sun Valley in my facebook feed. One family owned for 55 years. They decided to restore it 5 years ago. Now it’s a pile of parts - the usual enthusiastic start that ends with nothing. At $2,000 no one is biting. Front hubs removed so it’s not even a roller.
John Bloom
These are great looking cars. I had a 53 Sunliner convertible that had a lot of similarities to it. I have a soft spot for these because my father-in-law had one when he was 18, courting his then girlfriend, my current mother-in-law. He said he would spend the whole day prepping my car to go pick her up for a date. I always thought we might get one for him as a surprise. The one thing he did say though was the August summer days in Oklahoma with that glass top, made the inside about 130 degrees.

Given the special nature and the size, two grand seems a bargain! Also, it's hardly surprising 60 year old plastic in a location that gets a lot of sun would have problems!

I bought and sold my two tone green Sun Valley (similar to the one below) in the early '70's after the brakes failed and my girlfriend (now wife of 48 years) ran it through the roll-up garage door. She was a keeper, the Merc wasn't.

If I owned one, I would create a vinyl piece for the inside. Attach using Velcro. Discreet. Use it during hot months. Remove at car show.
B Jake Moran
Found this - Mercury offered a snap-on interior shade for high summer.

Fossil
All the down sides is why I would prefer the 2dr hardtop version of the Mercury.
