I am just noticing the ‘side frame rail’ which looks like nothing more than sheet metal, on this car. Are these cars unitized construction like the Hudson stepdowns?

Yes, the Nash 600 Series 40 was America's first mass-produced car with fully unitized, body/frame construction, which it pioneered for 1941.  Interestingly enough, the concurrent Ambassador Six Series 60 was still body-on-frame construction.  The 600 weighed only ~2,700 lbs, which with its 20-gallon gas tank X 30 mpg = 600 miles, hence the model's name.   That 30 mpg was achieved with a 172.6 cu. in. 82hp L-head six...a light foot and flat ground...
