1988 Mercedes 560SL

Recommended Posts

Bought this beauty about 9 days ago. Towed it home from Delaware August 5th. All original except tires, hoses? and belts? 1988 560 SL with 22,633 miles when it got to my home.

Very, Very clean. Not perfect, but no car is. Looking forward to using it with my wife for AACA and other tours, and nice top up or down (Hardtop or not) weather drives. Hope to start showing it in HPOF next year.

A few photos attached.

Nice color combo.  Despite miles please service upper timing chain guides and tensioner, chain and lower guides should be fine.

If you do not already know these cars pm anytime we have had ours for 12 - ish years and I do know a little something about them. 😉

Thanks Steve_Mack_Ct for the advice. These cars are new to me. Have some friends in the MBCA and one who collects a lot of these. I am a member of the MBCA and the Westchester/Ct MBCA Section.

Do you know Ann Fagan?  PM sent.

Phil, that is great to hear, that is so important but some other things, steering box, coupler, drive disc, correct anti slip diff fluid, will keep that SL feeling like new!!  Great looking car!

Steve, Thanks for the tips. They are all now on my list for Tuesday.

Some photos of having the car gone through at a well known Mercedes shop for its first go through since purchasing the car. Mechanic was very impressed. Said it is definitly a all original 22,000 mile car. There is not one score mark or anything on the camshaft when he took the valve covers off to put new gaskets in. Thanks Steve Mack for the tips. The upper tensioner and guides were fine. Steering box was also good. bushing rubbers were torn, but OK. Replaced them anyway. Found some mouse residue, some in intake and evidence of some chewing on hoses, all cleaned up and replaced. Fluids all changed, camshaft oilers, fuel lines done, etc.

. Brakes are good and original so no need for anything now. Car runs great. $900 in parts. Labor cost was reasonable for a mercedes tech.

If this model has them, the rubber flex disc on each end of driveshaft should be checked for cracks. That would be number 1 on my list. The one on the front can destroy the transmission if it comes apart.

Thanks. Will look it up and ask. Transmission, all couplings and rear end, etc checked and replaced what was needed. The car had his total attention for 3 full days of work. Great Mercedes mechanic.

Took the 560SL to our monthly Ct. Cafe Racers lunch in Southport Ct. yesterday. 50 miles roundtrip. Car ran great. Picked up Automotive Hall of Famer Judy Stropus for the drive there and back in Ridgefield Ct. Top down both ways. A little cool on the way there, but warm and spectacular on the ride home, all back roads of course. Hit 23,000 miles on the drive back home. Lots of compliments for the car. Always a fun time with a great bunch of friends and cars.

A very nice example of a very impressive car. These were really the "cat's pajamas" when everybody wanted coupes and convertibles. It's nice to see one that's going to be preserved. Enjoy it!

Thanks. Looking forward to showing it with the AACA next year. Maybe get to take it on a tour also once the 2024 calendar comes out.

Put 318 miles on the car the last two weekends. Last week was a small classic car tour. Started in New Canaan Ct to almost the Massachusetts  border and ended up in Kent Ct for a great catered lunch. The foliage was at peak. Was a wonderful drive with really nice back roads done at a good pace. Yesterday was a top down drive on what may be the last really nice day this year. (80* +) to Hyde Park NY and then to Rhinebeck NY for lunch. Car is running great and so far am very pleased with it.

I fell in love with that body style from watching Hart to Hart on TV in the 80's.  Yours is magnificent!

Thank you. I remember the Hart to Hart TV show. Always liked Robert Wagner.

Had the car out Thursday again for Ct. Cafe Racers lunch. Am in love with the car and how it runs. Just might be the last drive of the year if as usual the local County and Towns go crazy salting the roads when a expected flurry comes through this coming week. Just a few photos of the cars at the lunch. Always an eclectic group of cars and great friends.

Interesting and good mix of tastes. What is the white car with blue stripes?

Ferrari with Factory Custom Paint. Forgot the model name/number, will ask for more info,  but it is a $800,000 plus price.

Just got back from our Sunday drive with friends. This was started by the daughter of the founder of the Greenwich Concours Her father and then she were also a big part of the

Madison Avenue Sports Car and Driving and Chowder Society (NYC) who ran the Concours for years before selling it to Hagerty. Chowder is now back in member hands and am proud to

be a forty year+ member and now on the board of Directors.

Took out the 560SL as the weather was cold, but clear and the roads were basically still salt free. The car  is a pleasure to drive, ran great and I am sure it loved getting out for the drive

as much as we do. Have now driven the car just over 800 miles since getting it in August.

Looking forward to some AACA Tours and Meets this coming year. This drive become a tradition during Covid and has continued year round every Sunday since.

Usually we have a nice 40 mile or so trip ending with a stop for fresh food and donuts at a local Farm/orchard. Sometimes we also do longer trips.  Lots of good times over the last 4 years.

Very eclectic group of cars from modern to antique and daily drivers depending on the weather and time of year. Sorry no pics of the drive today. (Senior moment)

Photo is of the 560SL back safely in the garage with my 2 of my 1973 Buick Stage1 Gran Sports.

This time I did not forget to take photos. Here are a few from Kent. Have now driven the car abour 900 miles since the end of August when I bought it.

Was a great sunny, warm mid 60's day for a Sunday cruise with friends.

Our year round Sunday drives. Light turnout due to the Concours events in Florida.

A bunch doing judging and more than a few as entrants in both events.

First drive of 2024 with the 560SL. The trickle charger did its job and it started right up. Did a wonderful

60 plus mile drive and another 25-30 miles shopping for dinner and some fresh gas.

Just at about 1000 (23,6XX) miles now since we bought the car.

Looking forward to some AACA shows this year in HPOF.  Car drives like a dream.

Just a few photos.

Hi Philip, great thread. The car looks great!

Could you post the name of the Ossining mechanic you used? Looking at buying a 560SL myself and doing my homework on mechanics in this area.

Thanks,

James

Took the 560SL out again last Sunday for our regular Sunday drive with friends.

If everything goes according to plans we are registered and have hotel reservations to have it at the Eastern Springs National in Saratoga, NY,

and then the Fall National in Hampton, Va. The Saratoga Springs National will be it's first ever time at a AACA event.
