Replacement for a timken 315 tapered roller bearing

I can't be the only person looking for a timken 315 roller bearing.  I need it for my 1923 Hudson.  There must be another bearing that will also work.  Does anyone know the number of such a bearing?

There should be a bearing supply shop in your area, look in the yellow pages or online.They have, or can get practically any kind of bearing. Probably from the number stamped on your old bearing or maybe by measuring it. They also have all kinds of seals.

George Bachleda  (I may have spelled it wrong) who was “Olcar Bearing” passed away a year or so ago.  He was a true master who could find absolutely any bearing you might need.  I have since found the folks at South Shore Bearing in Massachusetts to be very helpful with obscure match-ups.

Timken 315 series seems to still current.

As above walk, into an industrial bearing supplier. Not a car parts place. Some industrial suppliers say they "don't do car parts", so initially do not mention the Hudson.  Look for someone behind the counter with grey hair and access to old hard copy bearing catalogues under the desk/out the back. Not some 20 year kid who only knows how to used a keyboard, has little technical knowledge-experince and has a trendy hair style.  They will need to spend some searching for a part that will sell for little. (long time - poor sales result) Some people will do this, Others will not.  You may have to buy the cup & cone set: sobeit.

What are the dimensions? The bearing catalogs are organized by size. We'd need the bore size and the diameter of the cone. The overall height would be good to but is not as critical. You shouldn't change one and not the other other than in an emergency.

The bore size is 1.0 inch or 25.4 mm

The cup outer diameter  2.8346 inch or 71.999 mm

The cone width is 0.8730 inch or 22.174 mm

The cup Width is 0.7480 inch or 18.999 mm

The Bearing width is 0.7481 inch or 19.002 mm

Hope this is what you need to find the bearing number I need

if I can't find a Timken 315.

I did a search and I have to say it isn't as easy as I'd have thought. The odd coincidence of an imperial ID and metric OD makes it very uncommon. I've only run into that problem once before – with the bearings in a the gear box on my lathe and I was forced to clean the old ones very carefully and re use them.

 

You could, and probably should, go to one of the obsolete bearing web sites. I've don't well with LocateBallBearings but, failing their ability to find what you need at a reasonable price (I did find some but the price was astronomical)...you could use Timken 15578 (bearing) and 15520 (cup) This will give you the proper ID and an OD of 2.25. You would then need to make - or have made a sleeve with the 72mm OD and an ID of 2.25 to press into the hub. This isn't difficult machine work but I've no idea where you are are whether you can do it or find someone who can. This bearing/cup combination is about 1.5mm thinner than the original so you may need a washer or shim under the retaining nut. There are other bearing combinations that are slightly taller but none I could find that were exactly 19mm.

Thank you guys for all your help and interest in my search. I have good news for everyone one that Oscar of Oscar Bearings is still very much alive.  Took me a while to get the right phone number but the lady that answered said

as Mark Twain said "The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated" They didn't have the bearing but will be looking.
