1965 Country Squire

I have the original purchase paperwork and Monroney Label from my dad's 1965 Country Squire. Is there any way to track a VIN to see if it is still on the road? VIN # 5G76X201232

Some states like Florida can track a VIN. Not sure which others, would be a handy list.

If the last you know about the car is circa 1965,

when it was an everyday car, I think the chances are

very small that the car is still on the road.  Only a small

percentage survive to collector status.

 

Still, it might be interesting to try to locate, if tracking is 

possible.  In what state was the car?  In a few states,

such tracking may be possible to the general public,

but often, states only allow policemen such a privilege

these days.

How does Florida "track a VIN"?  as far as I have seen they only verify the vin before a title is issued

In NY state our local police can do a nationwide search of the VIN number. The purpose of the search to verify if that number is already being used elsewhere  when he is there to witness a vehicle  that you are applying for LOST REGESTRATION or TITLE PAPERS. Its no different that the police doing a FBI nationwide search serial number on a hand gun. If its registered  it will pop up. My father sold a ANTIQUE CAR IN THE 1960S. I had a old registration for the car. I found the car 40 plus years later because it had been registered  to the road. Yes it can be done.

But isn't  that is only if the car is currently titled in the state of Florida?

Ted, Give them a reason.... use your head. Example- " Im thinking of buying a 1965 Ford wagon serial # XXXXXXXXXX, the papers are missing. Can you run this serial # for me?" Ive never had a problem. All I noticed in Florida in cars older then 1981 is that either the DMV official or a Deputy confirms that the VIN on the car matches the one on the paperwork. I never heard of Florida tracking VIN's

Pretty sure all states are different. Some purge records after 10 years. Some use Bill of sale rather than title. I've bought cars from bill of sale states and PA said "OK" and issued a PA title, no problem. Some states require multiple hoops to be jumped through.

I'm guessing states don't cross reference VIN #'s to track vehicle status.

I'd suggest you try the state it was originally registered in to see if it it currently has a license plate.

If a dead end you would likely be better served by spending your time/resources treating your romantic other (of whatever stripe) to a nice dinner.

States do share VIN information.

About 15 years ago a friend had his car stolen from a shop in Calif that was finishing up what needed to be done to complete the import process.

After a few years he figured the car was gone for good and would never be found.

Five years after it was stolen he gets a call from a police dept in Oregon saying that they have his car and he can come pick it up, he just needs to bring his original paperwork with him.

The stolen car was used as a display vehicle so it was never registered then sold to someone who tried to register it.

That was when it was flagged in the system.

Mr P you still have not answered my question how does the state of Florida track VIN numbers? as you you even shown with the above post once it leaves the state of Florida they have no idea where it is, Am I correct?

It's interesting, Padgett, that Florida makes some

tracking available, and thank you for sharing that;

Neither CarFax or AutoCheck will take a VIN less than 17 characters
