johnnyrock70
Hello all. I will be removing my straight 8 and transmission from my model 45R, and replacing it with a rebuilt '53 straight 8 and trans. My question is: can I remove and put back the engine with the dynaflow automatic transmission still attached to the engine as one whole unit?? As you know, this is a long unit, so I was concerned whether or not it can be taken out in one shot? Hoping to get advice from folks out there that have done this first hand. thank you all. 👍 Edited January 18, 2019 by johnnyrock70 (see edit history)
Jack Welch
I have never tried that , but as you say, it is a very long unit and my guess is that you would at the very least have to get the car way up in the air or pull the nose. If it were my car, I would disconnect the dynaflow. Edited January 18, 2019 by Jack Welch (see edit history)
g-g-g0
Never tried it but still a chore even with the front end off. Long and Heavy! I’d break it apart.
Pete Phillips
Yes, it can be done, but you have to remove the radiator, the upper grille bar, and maybe the grille--can't remember because it's been about 12 years since I did a '53. johnnyrock70
I like Pete Phillips answer 👍 Thanks Pete. Yes, the radiator will be out anyway. I'll give it a shot!
51dyno
Figure out the total weight that your equipment is able to handle it . Remove everything in front of the radiator so you end up with less tilt
Bill Stoneberg
It helps to have one of those devices that will allow you to tilt the engine as it goes in. When I put my 47 engine and transmission in I had to have the nose way up in the air.
Kestrel
Harbor Freight sells a decent load leveler. Shown here, I've attached it to my shop crane to " tilt out " my '32 Chevy 6 and its small tranny. You should verify its capacity before attempting the Dynaflow removal. daddymott1
yep Pete Phillips bout told it right . but just to be on the safe side i would take the grill out .what 10 more min. worth of time to save 500.00 . use a center balance point to hang motor and trans on lift then you can tilt it either way . walk her right on in bolt her up dress up motor grill rad rail and all then go for a ride . ps take the fan blade off just that much more to get in the way .
