I was thinking of doing the door jam areas in colour and leaving the rest clear.  You won’t see much of it but if you lift the carpet or look under the dash you’ll see it;)

Here is a photo of the rubber around my 1930 Dodge gear stick, as a staring point in your search. It is exactly a copy of the origonal on mine(Richards Body). Don't know if it dates back to 28 models.

Got it from the states, will have too look it up if of interest to you, can take a photo of it inplace if you need it

Thanks Matt - have now made one based on your pic and dimensions.  As you say, they have the same gearbox so should be similar and Bob mentioned that some models had the swaged feature and others were flat.  I think my car was a budget model so I’ve gone flat:)

That looks good mate. I’ve seen a couple of floors done in clear on the timber and just a small aluminium angle on all the edges. Yours would look great like that I reckon.

Sits on top  of the carpet, with 4 screws to hold it down, or you could glue it to the carpet, but gluing it is pretty permanet, On top of the carpet it provides a nice defined edge around the carpet, and around the shift housing. I reckon I may have got it from 'Steele" rubber in the states. I just checked Steele, your car is the same as mine, they have them for a 28, but they are quite costly. I think I have an old one here, that I could send over to you if you want to have a look at one  to make one up.

Thanks Kevin - I may hold off for the moment as my current trim has gaiters stitched to the carpet for the brake and gear levers.  I may have to re-do the trim anyway.

Here is a photo of the pad in situ, I think it has a thin plate imbedded in it to make it sit nice and flat, you have caught me out , I found that I still need to do a bit of cleaning up on the gear stick & cover

Kevinthanks for sharing - that’s the first time I’ve seen one of them.  Does yours also have something similar around the pedals?

Neither of my cars had any plate around the pedals, especially the tourer, which had the angled piece of floor in the car but no carpets or gaskets left in it. You can see in the photos above the motor trimmer has edged the carpet around the pedals, I'm undecided as to whether I will try and seal it   further or not,there is not a large gap around the pedals , I guess it depends how much hot or cold comes in there in the future.

 I was more concerned about the visual aspect of the gearbox sticking out of the floor, with the pedals it is not all that noticable, half under the dash.

These are the three shift pad or steering column pads I make if that will help you. I can not put the metal plate in them, could be bonded to the back I guess if necessary. I get $40 each plus shipping.

Working through all the little bits now to finish the body - takes ages and not much to show for it.

That’s some fiddley work there Rich, They look perfect.  Some days you work all day at this stuff and look back and think you haven’t accomplished much but it’s all the finer details that make it a great restoration. I spent half a day the other day cleaning up all my con -rods felt like it took for ever. Had to press all the top bushes out to clean the oil gallery.

I was lucky that I was able to make up a set from the two bodies that I had but that is beautiful work Rich Its no easy feat making those fiddly little boxes and the caps look like you raided the Holden Body Works back in 27 Just great workman ship with a good eye for detail

All the door stops finished and fitted now. I’ve got a 4 door car again:)

 

Finished off the front seat support brackets.

 

 

Started cleaning the door latch mechanisms.  The sliders are quite worn so have repaired them.  Also had to re-make a few parts - the sheet steel breaks very easily when bending the tabs.  You have to heat them to disassemble (learnt that the hard way).

 

I think I’ll get all the parts plated whilst apart that way hopefully they will never go rusty again.

Yea, luckily you helped me bend most of them with a bit of heat so just a few of them damaged that I’d tried before that:).

Started pulling apart again - think It’s about ready to clean up and prime the metal work.  Most of the wood work is done bar a few bits for attaching the trim (which I need to figure out).  Looks quite cool as a wood skeleton.

 

Hopefully we’ll be allowed some COVID freedom soon so I can get some more things done.

Looks fantastic Rich, you must be pretty happy to be at that stage now. 
I know nothing about the timber bodies but does the bulk of it come off in one piece so you can paint it,  or does it come apart in sections. It’s a credit go you mate you’ve done an amazing job.

The original wood in my Senior was painted the same color as the metal

Ron, MOST of the area of my sedan where there is wood the body metal is black. But it doesn't look like paint, it is more like  stain. I wonder if it was some kind of preservative.

Back in the day it could of been Creosote or some other type of wood preservative. It was almost black wasn’t it.

It will come off complete when done.  Plan is to get metal work done and clean up the woodwork.  Then metal work back on to the frame and nail on.  Will then fit to the chassis and do final fit on doors, gluing and fitting latches etc.  then should be able to take complete body off for painting.

 

 I may have to make a frame to help keep it straight - particularly the back end as there’s a lot of weight behind the rear joint.

Good question.  I’m thinking I will probably give it a coat of sanding sealer/varnish in the areas that get covered up.  For some of the visible areas (door surrounds etc) will go with body colour and the rest (Floor boards etc) I want to just varnish - seems a shame to hide that lovely wood:)

The amount of time I spent as a kid creosoting my parents fences and barns - I hated the stuff.  Nothing ever rotted though.  Works even better if you throw some old engine oil in the mix.

When I was a dumb ass teenager ( not a whole lot has changed) I gave a mate of mine a hand to build and paint his fence. He neglected to tell me we were using creosote to paint the fence. Come that night I was wondering how I’d got so sunburned on my face and arms. I’d been touching my face and licking my fingers with the shit all afternoon. 
He said Ohh! Sorry I should’ve told you about that. Bloody hell that shit burns.

Anyone have good experience with the best way to attach the steel panels to the wood?  I’ve got the nails but should you drill pilot holes or is that unnecessary.  Also, should you use any type of sealant in the joints or is that overkill too?
