Vintage Ford Pickup Question

I'm assuming you mean the flathead years. Anyway,in the passenger cars 39 was the last year with a floor shift. It was also the first year with synchronizers in the three gears. They kept this trans in the pickups until midway in 50. The bigger trucks kept them on the floor afterwards but these were all 4 or more speeds. Those synchronized 3 speeds are prized by the modifiers for use with hopped up flatheads. They did away with the closed driveshafts in 46, I think, so if you're putting one in an earlier ford you need to look for the 39 or 40-42 truck unit.
