Fr. Buick
Just had to brag that after seven years of collecting parts and moving in little steps, I have successfully installed factory-correct Frigidaire AC into my Super hardtop. With six pounds of R-12, the high and low pressures are great, and I got frost inside the rear ducts last night on the freeway. And this morning, still no sign of leaks!!Thanks to Mr. Earl, Ol'Tank, and my Olds buddy Neil. Anybody else out there with a working '54 AC? Paul Falabella
Cool! No pun intended. Got mine working(with the help of Old Tank) last year. Found I needed to add a can every 6 to 8 weeks. Slow leak somewhere. Got a can of R12 with leak detecter. Will start the season with that and see what shows up.
old-tank
Good news! You are the first I have heard of with a (working) 54 a/c. Now that it is working, use it regularly...my 55 leaks less with constant use than prolonged inactivity; even then expect a pound (16oz) a year. If the leak is intolerable, try to find a competent shop that know how to use a halogen detector or at least use a fluorescent dye (I looked like I was fingerprinted after working on Paul's compressor that had a red dye install ). If you use a halogen detector, don't do it right after servicing... there will be residual refrigerant everywhere for a few days.Willie
Fr. Buick
Thanks, Willie, I will make a point of firing it up regularly.I have been using an halogen detector all along. I found it for cheap at a swap meet. A great tool, and I figured that there were so many connections in the system that it would be necessary. Well, it is! PONTIAC1953
here's the 55 buick a/c unit sitting in my 53 pontiac trunk, it fits real well with the pontiac trunk hinges and springs causing no installation problems at all. holes in the rear fenders for the fresh air scoops, cadillac types. even my car's optional rear radio speaker is clearing everything.
