mp65riv
I am looking to upgrade the wheels/tires on my 67 Riviera. It came from the factory with the Riviera chrome rally wheels. I am looking for a set of 17 inch rims that are as close as possible in style to the original Riviera chrome wheels. I've seen a set at Wheel Vintiques that is a possibility (they appear to have 2 difference buick chrom rally wheels, one for the A body and another for the larger buicks). Anyone know of any other possibilities? Thanks much!
RivNut
Gil Losi runs these 18" rims on his 1967 Riviera. Like the factory Formula Five rims without the black inserts.
mp65riv
Looks pretty good. Any idea where he purchased them? I did some digging and Billet Vintiques out in California has something similar, with the black inserts. Thanks much
RivNut
Gil had those custom made; they're "one-offs." If you Google 'Gil Losi Riviera' you can find articles and other pictures of his car. Ed

RivNut
I saw these today in an aftermarket wheel store. They had one mounted and hanging on the wall. In person I thought it looked very much like the original equipment Formula Five wheels that were available on Rivieras from 65 through 7? I think if you were to paint the areas around the bolt holes black, they'd look even more like the OE wheels. They're called Polished Salt Flats and are made by American Racing. 15 - 17" diameters, most any width you want, many choices for back spacing, and 5" bolt circles.Ed

RivNut
So, guess what I just got...Should I black them out to resemble the Buick rims? Try blacking them out using PhotoShop or something similar before going all the way and then not liking it.
68RIVGS
I think if you black them out, it will draw too much attention to the oversize wheels? They look pretty good just the way they came right out of the box !As Ed sez: Try one with photoshop, to help you decide and post a pic.BTW: That photo showing one mounted is a '68 or '69 ? NTX5467
You might see if you can find a "vehicle wrap" place near you (if the owner is a car person, that might be a plus!). Take them a wheel and see if they might cut you some satin black "wrap" for the needed dimensions. That way, if you don't like the end result, you just peel it off. Not sure of how much that might cost, though. NTX5467
cool57
Use Plast-Dip aerosol. It will peel right off. Cost under $10.
Rivdrivn
Great suggestions guys, thanks. I like mods that are easy to reverse.Ok, so I don't have Photoshop or even a computer any more (I run a paperless office using only iPad, iPhone, and iCloud). This is a feeble attempt at finger painting but here it is. How do you like it?
Carbuff2
I like the black inserts over the original (non-painted) look. Thanks for keeping us posted, I have wondered about my '65 Gran Sport with 17" and wider tires but I always end up with the Factory Rally Wheels. PaulI originally intended to put them on my black '65 but they look good on the '69 too. It would be great if I can find a tire size that works well on both. I was thinking maybe 255/50r17 plus 275/50r17 but that is wider than is ideal for the '65 and 225/50r17 plus 255/50r17 is too short. Harder to find good performance tires in 55s or 60s. I'm open to suggestions.

RivNut
Those wheels are for A body cars (Skylark and GS - not Gran Sport, GS) with the 4-3/4" bolt circle. You'll notice that they're a two piece wheel rather than the smooth faced Formula Five wheel as found on the Rivieras, Electras, and Wildcats with the 5" bolt circle. Rivdrivn
Circle Racing. The guy at Circle Racing said he could make me 5x5 wheels but it's basically a modified Magnum wheel design. Not cheap either. Here's the look I'm striving for:
NTX5467
The other night, I was comparing 17" tire sizes which have the same "revs/mile" as P225/70R-15 tires (758 revs/mile for BFG Radial TAs -- what's on my '77 Camaro with factory 15x7 Z-28 steel wheels). Interstingly, I did find some good revs/mile matches! I found the specs on TireRack's website. Baseline: P225/70R-15 1753lbs @ 35psi 9.25" section width 27.4" OD 758 revs/mile Radial TA "S" speed P225/60R-17 1709lbs @ 44psi 9.25" section width 7.6 tread width 27.5" OD 753 revs/mile P215/60R-17 2094lbs @ 44psi 8.95" 7.4" 27.2" 768 P225/60R-17 1709lbs @ 44psi 9.25" 7.5" 27.6" 753 Michelin Defender The P225/70R-15 size should be the same/similar OD and revs/mile as a P215/75R-15 tire (GR78x15) One thing I noticed with many of the 17" low-profile tires is that their tread depths got really THIN, whereas the ones listed have between 10/32" and 11.5/32" tread depth, although their wear ratings didn't really indicate this, which means (to me) a harder rubber compound (fwiw). I'd rather have deeper tread for wet weather and snow capabilities. I'm just as the "investigational" stage, so that's why I was looking for tires in that rim diameter. 60FlatTop
I ran this set of Cragar SS wheels on my Impala for less than 6 weeks. They are 17 X 8, 5 on 5 with caps. Something around $1,000 will buy them and they are still in the original boxes. It is a discontinued size. Sometimes I call those styled steel wheels the obligatory Buick wheels. The specs listed by the tire companies are accurate FOR THEIR PRODUCTS. The information provided by the various apps (the first one I saw, years ago, was by the Miata Club) are generalized "in theory" numbers, which can be great to compare different tire sizes to as many have side-by-side comparisons or overlays of the comparisons. GREAT to visualize the differences. Back in about 1968, when the then-new alpha-numeric tire sizes appeared (as a result of consumer-driven governmental orientations/regulations), each tire size had its "spec" dimensions, with an allowed 7% variation to the plus side of things. NTX5467
Those finned wheel covers have such a timeless design. They'll look good on most any car designed in the 1960s-1970s. Especially Gen I Rivieras! Even without the center spinner. NTX5467

Typically, I like wheels as opposed to wheel covers. The turbines bolt on nicely to the Buick wheels. Turbinator
