  1. Al, You are absolutely right, it was a Continental and did not have Lincoln in front of the name. I remember seeing one in a shopping center parking lot in 1956 and I looked at it for at least 20 minutes. It was beautiful in every respect, from any angle the lines were perfect. I believe these cars are extremely under valued today. I am also a big fan of the '56 Lincolns (Premiere). I was very dissapointed in the restyling for '57.
  2. I like the choices on the list although everyone probably has a car that they think should be included. For me it would be the 1956-57 Lincoln Continental. The website and forum for Automobile magazine is really interesting too.
  3. It looks like a very nice Buick GSX. I think you would have better luck finding a buyer if you put it into the BCA Buy and Sell forum.
  4. It looks like a very nice original, but the paint is worn thin and would need a paint job to look really good. Quality paint jobs are very expensive, but if it is in excellent mechanical condition it probably is a good buy. A little negotiation on the price would help though.
  5. That is a great website. I agree the place to see most of these great films is Turner Classic Movie channel. Among the cars I checked out was Mercury because my favorite car I had in high school was a '54 Merc convertible. I was surprised that they did not have "Rebel Without a Cause" where James Dean drove a very cool '49 Merc coupe.
  6. I am sure that 99 44/100% of Honda owners are completely happy with their cars. My wife and I are Real Estate agents and most people who ride in our 2007 Honda CRV comment favorably about the car, including clients that are very pro American only car owners. We still have our 1995 Honda Accord with almost 200,000 miles with very few problems and it still runs and looks good.
  7. I am a GM buyer from the bad old days. It's a 1989 Chevy 2500 4x4 pickup. I still have it, but it is not used very often now. It has about 175,000 miles on it and it has been a lot of trouble. I won't bore you with everything that has gone wrong just some of the major items. Transmission rebuild at 100,000 miles. New radiator and 3 waterpumps. Front end completely rebuilt twice. Brake line rusted out and almost caused an accident. Fuel line rusted out, new gas tank etc. etc. The GM dealer was bad also. One time I took it in because the door handle broke on the drivers door. When I picked it up all of a sudden the brake warning light was on. They checked it out and said I needed a complete brake job. I told them to check their records because I had a complete brake job done ($1000+) less than 10,000 miles ago. They still said it needed the work. This was about 5 years and 35,000 miles ago and have not done any brake work. I never went back to the dealer again. At the same time my wife had a 92 Honda Accord that now has almost 200,000 miles. Other than regular service the only problem had been a radiator leak and replacement. The Honda's are reliable as an anvil!
  8. In 1969 I stopped at a Mercedes dealer with a friend. I had a '67 Austin Healey 3000 at the time. My friend had seen a '62 300SL roadster advertised and he wanted to take a look. They let us test drive it and it ran and looked excellent. The price was only $5000 and I could have probably traded the Healey and paid about $2500-$2000 for the car. I didn't do it and I still kick myself about that one. I did keep the Healey for 10 more years and shouldn't have sold it then.
  9. My wife and I are both Real Estate Agents. We use our Garmin Nuvi 350 all the time. It used to be very hard using mapquest if we were showing 5 or 6 house out in the country to map out a route from house to house using Mapquest. Much easier now with the gps. It is handy when traveling to find restuarants off the interstates and it takes you right back to your route. You can also ignore it's turns and take a different way if you prefer. It will re-calculate and adjust. I think it is a great device.
  10. It's about time these beautiful '56 & '57 Continentals started being appreciated more. If Barracuda's, Dodge Challengers, and Roadrunners etc with big engines are bringing so much money ($200,000+). The Continentals are a far more superior design. There is no comparison in the quality of the contruction and styling of the Continental and the Chrysler Corp muscle cars of the 60's.
  11. The car looks to be in very good condition. It is close enough to stock to be restored original. I hope this car does not become a hot rod or even worse a "rat rod". You should advertise it a different venue and probably will have to come down on the price. Good luck and I hope it goes to a original restorer.
  12. I agree that Pete is doing a great job. I always liked the Bugle but it has definetely gone up a level and is an excellent read.
  13. Thanks Bill, I will check these items.
  14. Happy New Year Joe. I hope to meet you in person at Flint.
  15. Joe, Thanks for the information. I will probably wait for warmer weather to swap the bell housing. Until then I will try it with the weight on the shifter.
  16. Thanks Joe, I was hoping you would reply to this post. I wish the fix wasn't so hard though. One of the jobs I did on this project was to take parts home and clean them. The '47 engine was complete with the bell housing and I am not sure which bell housing was cleaned up and used when we put in the engine but I suspect it was the original '40 bell housing. Do you think if we swapped the bell housings this would solve the problem?
  17. I recently put a 1947 Buick (320 cu in) rebuilt engine in my '40 Roadmaster coupe. I started to rebuild the original engine but found that the block had a crack. I was lucky that a member of my Buick club had a 1947 Roadmaster engine that he sold me and I had this engine rebuilt. This engine is almost identical to the 1940 engine including motor mounts. I also replaced the entire clutch assembly. All work was done by a professional mechanic who is also in my club. The engine runs excellent but now I have a problem. When I let off the gas in high (3rd) gear it jumps out of gear. It did not do this before the engine was replaced. Does anyone know what might be causing this?
  18. In the Dennis Carpenter parts catalog they call it (or did call it, haven't looked at one for a while) the "car of the future emblem." I had a '49 Ford coupe and I jacked it up at a corner, what is supposed to happen?
  19. About 1961 I used to see a '57 Buick convertible, probably a Special that had a three speed standard transmission. I saw it several times, always had the top down and I noticed the guy shifting it through the gears. I would have loved to have it then and now.
  20. I believe that antique, Classic and special interest cars have a historic value. It would be nice if future generations could see these cars as they were built. I don't think anyone on this thread that is for keeping cars original, is suggesting we want to control what others do with their cars. There is nothing wrong with trying to promote the viewpoint of keeping cars original.
  21. One option could be put the gas stabilizer in and then run the engine until it runs out of gas. I am not sure if this would get all the gas out of the fuel injection but the gas that remained would have the stabilizer in it and should be o.k.
  22. Changing out the original straight 8 and trans with a 502 crate motor and 700-4 automatic is drastic to me. I think it is an ultimate ego trip to change a fine machine like this car to "personal taste". These rodders have more money than taste!
  23. It's a beautiful car. Looks very sharp in black with the silver accent.
  24. I agree with you and I would not support any "Rat Rod" or Good?? Guys" forum. I dropped out of the 49-51 Ford Club because the magazine became slanted toward modifying these cars.
  25. I looked at websites for original batteries for my '51 Ford. They were about $120.00. They included the original dimensions of the battery. I went to Battery Warehouse and found a matching size battery for about $60.00. I don't know if Battery Warehouse is a nation wide chain but there are several here in Maryland and I have always had good luck with thier batteries for the last 20 years.
