  1. I usually try to avoid driving any of my old cars when traffic is at a busy stage. I go out early in the morning or when most folks are at work. When I have driven in a rush hour mode most drivers attitudes seem to be "Oh it's an old car, it must be driving really slow! I have to pass it right away"! Even if I am driving well over the posted speed limit they feel they have to tailgate and pass. Not very enjoyable driving.
  2. I had the radiator in my 40 Roadmaster recored with 4 rows of tubes for extra cooling. Now it runs cool with no overheating. Before it would tend to run hot especially at higher speeds or idling at a long traffic light. I think it was about $400 about 3 years ago.
  3. The bid is $8100 right now. It looks to be a nice car well worth the current bid IMHO!
  4. Drove my 63 Riviera to the Buick Owners of Maryland (BOOM)'s annual picnic at the beautiful farm of founding member Howard Price. The weather could not have been better and everyone had a wonderful time!
  5. I joined, it seems like an interesting site and friendly people!
  6. I like the cool sound of first gear in Buicks with standard transmissions. It has a very distinctive whine.
  7. Wow! That is a group of beautiful Cadillacs and LaSalles. I was trying to pick my favorite and it was very hard. I choose the 57 white Biarritz Convertible as the one I would like to own the most.
  8. Allcars, your 40 Roadmaster Convertible is a real beauty. I wish my 40 Roadmaster Coupe looked that good!
  9. I was watching Mecum Auction yesterday and a very nice red & white 55 Century came on the block near the end of the telecast. It had beautiful paint and chrome with a perfect interior. It got bid to $25,500 but was pushed off and did not sell at that point. The show ended so I don't know if a deal happened later.
  10. It is a very nice Buick, but $50,000 is a lot of money. Wonder what the reserve is $75,000?
  11. Pete the Wildcat is coming together very good. I am very partial to Buicks and Oldsmobiles that have a 3 speed transmissions. Years ago I bought a 55 Oldsmobile 88 2 door hardtop from an older man that had a 3 speed transmission and a radio delete plate. I sure wish that I had not sold it to get a newer car. You hit the jackpot with this car!
  12. Back when the 57's were new they usually only had one mirror on the drivers side. So it would not look weird with one mirror. Installing door mounted mirrors on both sides would look good and still be correct.
  13. Good news, the old plugs are out, and it worked by tightening then loosening. taping with a hammer on a breaker bar. The champions made the car run much stronger. I put a small amount of anti seize compound on the threads. Skyler thanks for your advice.
  14. Dual master cylinder sounds like a good idea. What would need to be done to the brake lines to make this work?
  15. Thanks Rusty, I saw that discussion but am hoping for the best on the Champions. I was concerned that the newer brands of plugs like NGK may not be the correct heat range. I am having a hard time getting the old plugs out. I have used PB Blaster penetrating oil but am having a hard time breaking them loose. I have 3 out and once they break loose they unscrew smoothly. I guess I was stronger 25 years ago. Any suggestions?
  16. Thanks to all who replied, and for the good advice. I have rebuilt them myself on my 40 Roadmaster and it has been holding up fine so far. I will take a look at the whole brake system and evaluate what should be done.
  17. Took my 63 Riviera out for little exercise yesterday. All seemed good and it was running very good. When I started home from an errand the brake pedal started to sink when I applied the brakes. I was able to get home but pedal kept sinking on stops. Pretty sure it is the master cylinder. Brake fluid was not low. Gee I just replaced the master cylinder when I first got the Riv, about 25 years ago! The master cylinders seem hard to get for 63's nowadays. "Cars" had them for 64 & 65 but not 63's. Can anyone tell me a source for the master cylinder, or at least a kit for 63 Rivs.
  18. Thanks so much for this info. I called Earl Brown but got his voice mail and left a message. I will order the H-10's from him.
  19. I put new spark plugs in my 1951 Ford about 25 years ago when I bought it from the original owners family. I put in Champion H-10 which is what the shop manual specified. I think it's about time to change them but I am confused on what plugs to use. The Champion H-10's do not seem to be available. When I go to websites for spark plugs they list plugs like NGK which would be fine but I am concerned if they are the correct heat range etc. I don't want to do any damage to the flathead V8 engine. Can anyone give me guidance? Thanks!
  20. They both look to be nice cars. Is that a repair shop that works on older cars? I think the Chevy is a 63.
  21. Hot Rods at AACA events like Hershey would go against the clubs number 1 rule. I hope that there are never any Hot Rods at Hershey!
  22. Several years ago our club, Buick Owners of Maryland (BOOM) visited Herb Wessel's collection. It was very impressive, a lot of nice cars and tractors. There were many Case automobiles, probably the largest collection of them that exists. He was a very gracious host and very nice guy.
  23. When I bought my 51 Ford Country Squire wagon it had been sitting in a garage untouched for 27 years. The gas had turned into solid black crud. I pulled the tank off and took it to a radiator shop where they hot tanked it for about two days and it came out clean. I sealed it with Eastwood gas tank sealer and when I installed it back in the car I put a visible filter in the gas line near the carb. This was over 20 years ago and it has never given me a problem.
  24. There is a new advertisement that is airing on TV that I think may be a bad strategy. The ad shows people near new Buicks and talking on cell phones. They say meet me outside, I am next to a Buick. The response is: I don't see a Buick! They imply that these new Buicks are nothing like the previous ones. Buick has a great tradition and this seems dismissive of past (and great) Buicks. It reminds me of the ads that Oldsmobile ran saying "It's not your fathers Olds". This never made sense to me considering the 49 Olds was such an advanced and trend setting car, as well as many other great Oldsmobile of the 50's, 60's and 70's. We all know what happened to Oldsmobile! What do you think of this new Buick advertisement?
