  1. I agree that the enlarged, Buick-style wheels look kind of strange. Re white walls vs larger road wheels: seems to me that the bright outer "rim" of certain more classic-looking road wheels (like a Torque Thrust with a machined rim on a painted spoke area) approximates the radius location of a narrow white wall on a 15" wheel. Such wheels with a modern black wall, in a size with the same O.D. as the original tire, tend to look quite good on our old cars, as they sort of evoke the white wall.
  2. Been for sale forever. Not in Cadillac, MI. It's near Brainerd, MN. RUSTY!
  3. Great advice as usual, I am a student and fan of your perspectives and methods. I'm actually in Minneapolis though. And already ruled SMS out as above. Interestingly, while one would think a personal visit to England would be price (and time) prohibitive, the savings on the fabric itself (over SMS's avaricious prices) would pay for more than one trans-Atlantic round trip.
  4. Well, I didn't start out measuring. I requested and received swatches from the two sources I perceived to be the best, namely SMS and Jenkins. Neither looked right. SMS was visually too "narrow", so out came the tape measure. The Jenkins swatch measured as the original, but heft and texture didn't seem right, not robust enough. One of our colleagues in England, Peter Rickinson, had done a '49 RM Sedanet using fabric sourced locally, and he was nice to give me their contact info. Their swatch is beautiful! Just have to decide what cutting I should send them for the color match.
  5. SMS's swatch was not the correct "guage", ie the cords were too narrow. The original is 9 cords, or ridges per inch. And their shade of gray is seemingly too light. This pic is the original. And frankly, SMS's attitude is less than cooperative.
  6. I agree, but I am slightly reticent to totally rely on a cutting from the darker area for fear of chemical discoloration with time, like the headliner. It seems to me that even the darker areas have become a little greenish. One would think the gray sought after would not be greenish. Although, the lighter paint shade on the dash is a greenish-gray. One "authoritative" person told me that nothing inside the car should be greenish, but clearly that dash paint hasn't changed with time.
  7. Getting ready to order. Established contact with a great company (thanks Peter Rickinson!) which will dye the new fabric to match. But what color? Things have differentially faded and discolored from age, and it is hard to know what's right. Here is a rear armrest from my Sedanet, which has it's original code 70 gray Bedford Cord interior. One can see the pattern laid down by the side of the lower rear seat cushion: the area above the seat is clearly faded lighter, and the area "hidden" by the seat is darker. But is it original? Or has it discolored with age, as the headliner has (the latter is supposed to be gray, but is now frankly brown)? Interested in opinions! Thanks in advance!
  8. Hey Everybody, It's been mentioned more than once on this board that the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was routinely started with a start cart powered by Buick Nailheads. Recently made a trip to NYC and was able to visit the USS Intrepid, which has an SR-71 on the flight deck. Lo and behold, nestled right up next to it was the fabled start cart, Nailheads intact (see pics)! I couldn't capture it too well, but Nailhead #2 is behind the one you see.
  9. Here is a correct handle for the '49 Roadmaster and Super. This one is available if your friend is interested.
  10. Agreed! They are as solid as a brick, a pleasure! I've got Coker radials on mine, 7.60 x 15. No wailing!
  11. That's a beautiful car. But the brake pedal sure is worn....
  12. Owner of S&M recently died, company is rumored folding up.
