  1. Years ago, I rebuilt (a mistake) a '86 3800 that had a SEVERE rod knock. Guy ran it til it didn't run anymore, and junked the car ('86 Park Ave). Upon disassembly , it was known the crank was junk, but three rods were so out of round as to be egg shaped. You could SEE they were out of round. Amazing it ran...
  2. Are you sure the emergency brake is FULLY released? How long has the red light been lit? Do the brakes work ok?
  3. I've had this happen; latch sticks. After pulling the underdash lever, I hit the front of the hood with my fist, and it pops up.
  4. Is that right? 14,000 miles?...or a typo?
  5. Are we sure the bladder is "rubber"? Has anyone sliced one of these accumulators open to see what's inside?
  6. Carol and I go to Annapolis every year to fight this issue of raising the antique tag eligibility from 20 to 25-30 years. We're joined by SEMA reps and the Cadillac club here in Maryland, and every year the bill never makes it to the legislative floor.
  7. My first post was wrong. The module on the left is the BCM; middle is the CRTC and flasher module; and the right one is the ECM. The other module in the center of the dash/consol drivers side is the 5 volt power supply.
  8. The middle picture is the CRTC and turn signal module. The first looks like the ECM, and the last is the BCM. How am I doing?
  9. I think Bikemikey may have it. The grommet the pcv hose goes into the plenum, gets brittle and disintegrates causing a nasty vacuum leak.
  10. Could be either one; six capacitors in the radio, or the speaker. The speakers are notorious for the cone foam suspension turning to dust. The cone then has no edge support and rattles around. Cure is to replace the speaker. The radios are also prone to these six capacitors going bad. 2 mfd @16v., if memory is correct. Somewhere I saw a tutorial on how to repair these. Best left to an electronics tech.
  11. It used to be that Hershey was pre-war, and Carlyle was post. Is this still true, or have both events become one in the same? Havn't been to either in decades...
  12. Um, what's with the piano? Yes, we are plessed with an easy water pump; try the 4.5-4.9 Cadillac pump, 18 bolts and about 18" long.
  13. Are you aware that the computer will NOT allow clutch engagement (ie, close the relay) when it's low on Freon? Reset your BCM codes or disconnect the battery for a minute.
  14. Measure the vacuum at the line going to the HVAC, and see if it's even there.
  15. Air out the defroster vents only is almost always a loss of vacuum at the controller (under the glovebox). USUALLY disconnected in the engine bay near the firewall.
  16. No. The blower is upstream from the evaporator too far for inspection or cleaning. The blower module is directly over the evaporator.
  17. If it's the 'wobble' I'm thinking of, it's three loose bolts at the base of the tilt mechanism. 8mm (5/16"?) hex head. Not an easy repair, if I remember. Common problem.
  18. I may have some Riviera wood dash pieces; let me look. Post me a PM if interested.
  19. Cleanliness doesn't have any ill effect on the crank sensor; it's a Hall effect sensor.
  20. Interesting Ronnie, I had (owned) a '74 Cadillac hearse awhile back, and it had that double walled exhaust pipe, only mine had the inner wall collapse in the pipe behind the muffler. I cut that section of collapsed pipe out for show and tell. The outer shell was perfect. The tipoff was a wheezing sound out the back.
  21. Cat converter comes to mind.
