  1. If we were not rambling off the subject, the subject would be quite short. A family here in town that once had a Cadillac V8 engine installed in their Packard touring car. No year is mentioned, but would this be an upgrade? Would it be an upgrade?? NO, from my point of view. To others Yes. Pretty short thread.
  2. The "MERLIN" 266 engine for the Spitfire was made in the United States by the Packard Motor Car Company. The "Merlin design" was developed and improved many times between 1933 and 1950. It is likely that the Spitfires rival (ME109), which was produced until 1957 likely was using Packard built Merlin's because all the engines out of the UK were WW2 surplus. Many of you saw the 1969 movie Battle of Britain? Granted there were a lot of model airplanes used, however there were actually real footage of Spitfires and Messerschmitt 109's and the quick trained eye would tell you the Messerschmitt's did not have an inverted Mercedes/Daimler V-12, but rather an upright Merlin meaning they were built under license after WW2 for the Spanish air force.
  3. Seems like the new electric cars have an advantage of going back to the earth quicker that the old cars. They certainly will beat them to the toxic waste dump.
  4. There was a guy in our AACA chapter that had a 350 chevy in a 53-54 Packard. The chapter would have an outing once a month and one month the owner (a chapter member) of the Packard brought his car and parked his car with all the rest of us. There was the usual B/S session with hoods up before going in for lunch with the general public walking around asking questions about the cars and the club. One observer guy, who asked questions about AACA and what it stood for just went off on the guy with the Packard and some of the club members standing by and started calling them and the club in general a bunch of hypocrites. Not much they could say to him with all the proof parked right next to him. BTW, there were a bunch of everyday people standing around to hear all of this.
  5. He's in Hospice, poor guy. From what I've read he's really a nice person.
  6. Think he is referring to the Hollister riot of 1947 The movie "Wild one" was based on that town takeover and riot.
  7. What vehicles do you recall having two windshields? wind·shield /ˈwin(d)ˌSHēld/ Learn to pronounce noun NORTH AMERICAN a window at the front of the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle.
  8. Change the heading. Most people who respond will not look at reactions to the heading or your explanations. So please clarify what you want responses to. Also are you referring to a single piece of wraparound glass or multiple pieces with dividers or multiple pieces glued together??
  9. No, talking about early 30's. Chevrolet, Wills St.Cair would be 20's. An overhead valve (OHV) engine is a piston engine whose valves are located in the cylinder head above the combustion chamber. This contrasts with earlier flathead engines, where the valves were located below the combustion chamber in the engine block. This does not mean they can't be horizontal. Notice the valve chest that is cast into the top of the block and the compound angles of the block and head mating surfaces.
  10. Name the American manufacturer of V-8 engines of the early 30's that had OHV's???? Anyone?
  11. Why was Columbo's Peugeot in such a ratty condition? A, to fit its owner's appearance.
  12. Can you show a car without plates without deduction?
  13. Advertised as yes, but in reality, no.
  14. Pontiac came out with a new V-8 engine in 1963 for the Pontiac Tempest. How many Cu. Inches?
  15. These questions are too arcane, but I'll give it a try. Morris Garage 1917 No provision for full flow oil filter on block rt=brake, reverse middle, left= shift hi-low
  16. Why was Columbo intentionally ratty-appearing?
  17. I posted this on a paint thread. Prior to the car I'm working on, the last time I shot a car in lacquer was in 1992 and before that 1974. In 1974 I shot my 65 Sea Blue Beetle, http://www.pismoderelicts.com/photogallery/new format 834/images/img_0138_edited_1.jpg The Beetle was done in the usual way of shooting acrylic lacquer cars I had done in the past. This means shooting a couple of coats and then when I could get some free time like a week or two, wet sanding and another couple of coats and so on until the desired coats is reached. In 1992 I decided to shoot my 69 Pontiac LeMans. Because I'm the original owner and the miles were so low a body-off was a waste of time however the front clip was removed and the deck lid too. This new color was PPG black, and I would shoot the car over several months (like I did the beetle). When the car was finally ready for paint, I had the hood and deck lid on easels and painted them first for their first coats. The next day I wet sanded them, tacked them off and hit them again and the proceeded to go around and shoot the rest of the car. When I got back to the hood and decklid the paint on them had shriveled up like crinkle paint!😬. My neighbor across the street was a PPG rep. so I asked Jeff what's going on. Didn't you read the container instructions??? NO! I've been painting cars in lacquer for a donkey's age! Why would I want to read the label? Turned out with this new lacquer (1992) you will do the first coat and keep going round and round until the desired amount of coats are put down. So I had to re-strip and start over again! http://www.pismoderelicts.com/photogallery/new format 937/images/p1020752.jpg
  18. Trivia question. 1964-1966 Pontiac GTOs automatic transmission is the ST300 1964-1966 Oldsmobile F-85 or Cutlass 442s automatic transmission is the ST300 What's the difference?
  19. Thats right! Exhausting 100LL from a car is illegal, but they don't mind exhausting lead from 100LL on you flying overhead.
  20. The new "A" body 1964-65 GTOs are LeMans with the GTO option. Since LeMans is its own series, it's not called Tempest LeMans. GTO is not called Tempest GTO, just LeMans GTO. Did you know that the new Oldsmobile "A" body 442 option could be ordered on either a F-85 or a Cutlass? Question for Rocketrader or Joe Padavano; Since the Oldsmobile price structure is above Pontiac was it possible to get a F-85 442 cheaper than a LeMans GTO?
