  1. The fourth freeze plug is on the back of the head, up against the firewall. You have to either pull the engine or pull the head to get to it.
  2. Welcome, Mike! You have chosen an excellent automobile. You might want to take a peek at my thread in the "Me and My Buick" forum. Depending on what's in store for your car, I think you will find some helpful information there.
  3. And you can be sure that we share that wish! What a great party, and the car looks spectacular!
  4. Congratulations, Brian, on the great feature article on your Roadmaster Phaeton in the latest issue of "Antique Automobile." What a beautiful job you did!
  5. Ted, not being a machinist or wood worker, I have to admit that I have the same reaction every time I look through the thread topics on this forum. I see this topic and think "Ouch, that's going to hurt!" 😄 Seeing the photos of the wood pieces has helped me understand what kind of "fingers" you're talking about! Beautiful work, as usual.
  6. Hi John: It's been a few years since I did this job, so I can't remember exactly how the assembly goes together. But I believe that the diffuser lens fits onto two studs that are cast into the pot metal lamp housing itself. If you disassemble the housing to separate the lamp socket from the housing, that exposes the studs. You will probably find the broken piece of the original lens sitting in there. (See attached photos.) Just pop off the broken piece and press the new lens onto the studs. Reassemble the socket to the housing and you're done.
  7. Neighborhood Visit I had a chance today to visit with my neighbor Thom ( @Shootey ) and get a look at his "new-to-him" '41 Special woody. What a lovely car! It's not roadworthy right now because Thom is replacing a broken window in the left rear door, but I'm looking forward to the day when we can have a proper photo session with our two cars together. I think we will spin some heads when we drive down 24th Street -- our little neighborhood's main street. Here's a preview of what Thom's car looks like.
  8. You're killing me, Ken! I've heard that fedex does a great job shipping barbecue. 😄 Can't wait to see the photos of the party on your other thread!
  9. Here's a pic of an original panel that's a bit better than the very rusty one that Ken posted. You can clearly see, as Grant says, that the rows are offset. The Seybold ones are not offset. They look good, but not like the originals. The Boyer ones are correctly offset like the originals.
  10. I had the same experience with my '41 Super. It took me a while to get used to the fact that you literally could not hear the engine idling at a red light. I kept thinking it had stalled. I agree with others that sloperlad probably needs a new muffler.
  11. I bought a system for my '41 Buick a few months ago. I would have to look it up to check for sure, but I think the shipping was under $60, Michigan to California. I also had a really good experience with Waldron, and would recommend them to anyone.
  12. Haha -- ask a question and you get a dissertation, as you often say! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
  13. Or, for only $32K more, you could have this one! 😄 (I know this is a bit off-topic, but I'm just looking for an excuse to post these stunning photos. This is by far the nicest '41 Chrysler interior I've ever seen. Plenty more photos on the Hemmings site.) https://www.hemmings.com/auction/1941-chrysler-windsor-696153?utm_medium=email&utm_source=EDaily&utm_campaign=
  14. A beautiful Labor Day today, and a perfect time to combine my two hobbies!
  15. Unfortunately, I have to say based on my experience that if one plug is done for, the remaining ones won't be far behind. As someone advised me when I posted about the one corroded core plug on my engine, "it's just a race to the finish and all this means is that the one plug is slightly ahead of the others." He was absolutely right, and the remaining plugs were totally gone within about six months. Fortunately, I was able to get at all the plugs in my 248 ci straight eight by taking the head off and didn't have to pull the block. I don't know what you have to do to get to this problem with the nailhead, but I would advise you to take care of this now rather than later.
  16. Is your wife out of town by any chance? Just thinking about the flack I would catch if I put engine parts on the living room carpet. Or maybe your garage is carpeted? Congrats on your progress -- everything looks great!
  17. This part was also missing from my '41 when I took the torque ball apart. Given the improvement in the actual seal and the way it fits, I didn't think the spring was necessary so I left it out when I reassembled it using the kit from Bob's. It has remained tight and I've had no leaks since doing the rebuild several years ago.
  18. I don't know. I was just searching for images online, and this is what came up. My car is a Super (51) and has a rubber floor mat in front (correct), and no carpet or other trim on the bottom of the door panels. I'm thinking that the 40A, being a less expensive model, would not have likely had carpet in front or carpet on the bottom of the door panels. But that's just a guess. You're getting good advice to check with Doug Seybold and Bill Anderson.
  19. Hi Grant: I found the same thing doing a Google image search. https://www.rdclassics.com/classic-cars/buick/special/series-40-sport-coupe-vollrestauration-2601
  20. This car is still around, now about $3K cheaper. It's not completely correct, as noted in the earlier posts, but looks very nice nonetheless. https://www.ebay.com/itm/234677214765?hash=item36a3da1e2d:g:OWAAAOSwsJBi1cvn&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAoJmcNTV53REmBfV2oKLKGtvLrGgarbTP2b6VghhEc3BPI42jkJEKIo9eJart6q9VUDSD1QzHfDxeo%2BJ%2Be1g7vO3MSk9pE9leoJIryFUzo11AJza6j82b5umFxf5flmmGlLfFEVd%2FlYUXilUrLiidwNjoqNOYTrMMgZmaHpF0mhTZ8foznXhrPmn7orabWR1jvw3TjRbqf6NCJ%2FqeiNqsfCI%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR5i32fXdYA
  21. Short answer is yes, they can be salvaged. You can get reproduction plastic pieces. Or in some cases you can buff out the old plastic to remove the discoloration. You scored a lot of great stuff, Matt! Especially the Fog Light switch!
  22. With the original Cord front fenders, I think the car looked very sharp and avant-garde without the running boards. When you mess up Gordon Buehrig's legendary design with that horrible front end, you might as well put the running boards back on! 😝
  23. Thank you, Bob! That's a great new moniker for Don!
