  1. 1928 Velie Model 66
  2. Velie was a brass era American automobile brand produced by the Velie Motors Corporation in Moline, Illinois from 1908 to 1928. The company was founded by and named for Willard Lamb Velie, a maternal grandson of John Deere. Velie founded Velie Carriage Company in 1902, which was successful, then Velie Motor Vehicle Company in 1908. *According to the Official Velie Register, world wide 230 Velies are known to exist as of 2010*
  3. I remember those advertisements
  4. "Smoke 'em if you got 'em" or in this case use the gas if you got it.
  5. Someone said fuel with ethanol does not store well, so can we assume this guy is getting the pricier e-free fuel?
  6. How come every time I post anything you have to quote it and declare how stupid it is? I will have to put you on ignore too. And you should reciprocate.
  7. I was told fuel with ethanol cannot be transported by pipeline due to it absorbing water. It will absorb water from humidity in the air, and spoil the fuel. Somehow fuel being transported by pipeline gets exposure to air. So fuel with ethanol gets transported by tank trucks and pipelines used for regular hydrocarbon fuel. This was discussed by Bill Wattenburg on his radio show, in which he claimed ethanol is not an environmental benefit due to the transportation costs, and the fuel wasted by the trucks needed to transport it. Ethanol is an interesting molecule. It is polar or hydrophilic (water-loving) due to the presence of the terminal hydroxyl group, so it dissolves in water. ... However, in the case of ethanol, the carbon chain is short enough so that the more polar -OH group dominates, giving the ethanol its polar character.
  8. I don't see how "Great White" can be interpreted as anything other than "Great White Shark." In fact to me "Great White Shark" sounds redundant.
  9. Yes the roads of the greater Boston area seem to have been laid out way before cars were invented, like back in the days of the mule pulling the cart to market. Then they were "improved" to accommodate modern high speed vehicles. Very different from Orange County California where there is just an orthogonal grid, major boulevards infilled with two lane streets.
  10. I haven't been to Massachusetts in a very long time, but I remember the way the roads were laid out and the driving was very different than what I am use to. Fewer traffic signals, more merging, and lane changing, much more free-form driving. I found it unnerving.
  11. Accident doesn't make much sense. This man was in the slow lane, someone passes him in the next lane (#2 lane) then veers right into the slow lane clipping him. Must have been speeding and weaving, a slower car in the #2 lane he wanted to go around by cutting over into the slow lane.
  12. It was raining It was raining and Arabian said he was driving carefully in the right lane at about 55 mph. Suddenly, a car passed him on the left, sideswiped him and caught the front fender and bumper. His Plymouth spun out and hit the guardrail.
  13. This fellow is doing a blind stitch, close to the edge, with foam for some modern pleating. If it were just top stitch he would not be folding the fabric over; he'd just be stitching straight over it and you'd see the stitches on the finished product.
  14. Col. M. Franklin standing proudly next to his brand-spanking-new 1928 Franklin Air-Cooled "Airman" Sedan
  15. wws944 OK I'll put you on ignore for both our benefit, and you can do the same
  16. That's interesting. the Volt is not and EV; rather a hybrid like a Prius. But the Volt is a "Series Hybrid" while the Prius is a "Parallel Hybrid." Prius can drive the wheels with both electric and gas simultaneously, thus called parallel. The Volt can only drive the wheels with electric, but the gas engine can supply the electric energy to the electric motor, thus is called series, the two power sources are in series. Certainly didn't realize it performed so poorly, 9 mpg.
  17. Gas in California is back up to $4 so that's another factor.
  18. I lived in Marina Del Rey also, for just one year, in a studio apartment. Loved it, paid only $600 per month back in 1987. Then bought a small 2 br 1 ba house with carport in Lawndale, the southbay, adjacent to North Redondo Beach.
  19. I get a 20% low income discount. For 3/16 through 4/14 I used 124.23 kwh at $0.259 = $32.18, minus the "CARE" discount of 11.25 = $20.97 (Looks like that discount is more than 20%, I don't know why, it used to be 20%) the Tier 1 lowest rate of $0.259 per kwh applies for up to 315 kwh, above that the rate increases.
  20. It's in my backyard. I could practically walk to go see it. Great classic small family sedan styling. And 4 door convenience, but doesn't look big and bulky.
