  1. Klean Strip paint remover. The paint remover has no effect on the porcelain. No wire brushes or abrasives were used.
  2. Durant, A good Car Got this sign from a friend that removed it from under their back porch. It was nailed up and painted to keep debris from blowing in under an old Baltimore house. It cleaned up pretty nice after removing the paint. I would like to offer them something but have no idea of the value. before after paint removal
  3. A bad coil will fail when hot with no spark.
  4. Has a multi cylinder classic ever been successfully started with a hand crank?
  5. My 46 Willys Jeep can be started with a hand crank. It actually starts fairly easy. Done it many times for kicks and giggles.
  6. As I recall watching Thunder Road. "What kind of Mill are you running under the hood", or something like that? "Each time they thought they had him, his engine would explode"
  7. The younger generation that can only communicate with acronyms. TYGTCOCWA ☺️
  8. If you sell on Ebay, toss one or two in with the sale. The buyer is usually thrilled with the extra treat. I have been doing this with Popular Mechanic and Science Magazines that date back to the early 30's just to get rid of them. Even at that pace I will never be able to get rid of them all.
  9. Is this it? it was on Barn Finds a few days ago. 1930 Packard | eBay
  10. This is no laughing matter here! My first car at age 16 was a Jaguar XK150 from a local salvage yard. Always used my father tools. I needed to remove a wire wheel to change a tire and the only hammer in his toolbox was a claw hammer, ball-peen and a rubber mallet. None were capable of knocking the wheels loose. My first tool was a 2lb. BFH that got the job done and I still have it.
  11. 6volts can be jumped by a new car. make sure all lights and accessories are turned off and remove cables as soon as it starts. Make sure cables are tight and good grounds. Six-volt systems require heavier battery cables than what you see on a 12-volt system.
  12. Thanks Johan, your advice is appreciated. The acid battery is what I am using. I purchase my 6volt batteries at a Tractor Supply store.
  13. I wish I could! Cadillac and Packard used a 3-filament bulb in 1932. Very difficult to find and expensive. Could exchange sockets and eliminate the passing light. Tried this with a Quartz Halogen conversion but felt that it drew too many amps.
  14. The Nichrome wire came today, and I ended up remaking the thermal shunt. I used a fiberglass circuit board material rated for 265 degrees. With the engine warm and at a fast idle (750 rpm) I have 5 amps at the gauge and 8.1 volts at the battery. Warm and at 2000 rpm, I have 10 amps at the gauge and 8.27 volts at the battery. Now with headlights on I am at -4 amps at the gauge. Most likely won’t be doing any night driving but LED bulbs in the taillights may help some. Any feedback is appreciated.
  15. Didn’t sleep at all last night thinking about how to clock this screw. There is 2 on each side of the instrument panel. All clocked except the upper left. I have tried multiple washers, and none will clock the screw. Now that this thread has been brought to my attention, every time I get behind the wheel, I will notice the un-clocked screw. I think if I cut a .010 shim for behind the screw, I can get it to clock. I need a drink now!
  16. Thank you all for the replies m-mman; Will plan on rewinding the thermal regulator device. After reading about solid state device, I think I will leave the factory system as is for now. Bloo; “Maybe that little resistor gave it's life to save the field coil.” This may have happened after the engine was rebuilt. Ran it on a test stand before installing with no load on the gen. I just ordered some nichrome wire. Edinmass; I will leave well enough alone as you suggest. Those units are harder to come by and more difficult to remove than what you find on a 33 Plymouth. I will rewind the thermal shunt and try to get the charging amps down. Johan; The broken wire is about .46mm at 26ga. Just ordered some and will rewind to achieve about .002 ohm.
  17. Trying to get my charging system sorted. Not all that familiar with the 3 brush generators. From what I understand, the third brush is adjusted to increase or decrease the voltage output. As of now while hot and at about 1600 RPM it’s putting out 8.3 volts and 14 Amps. The specs call for 7.7-8.1Volts and 13.5-16.5 Amps at 1600-1800 rpm. I will lower the output to 8v or just under. After pulling the cover band off I noticed something to look like a resistor with a brake in the wire. Hopefully the experts here can explain to me what I am dealing with here? Thanks, Alex D.
  18. Which is more important, clocked or tight? I try to clock whenever possible, especially high visibility areas. My preference would be tight.
  19. Harley Davison switch has worked well for me after so many people were telling me that I had no brake lights.
  20. Bucket list are rubbish. Stop writing list and get on with it and have no regrets! Now I wish I had a bigger garage.
  21. 1970 or earlier CJ5. I believe 1970 was the last year for under seat fuel tank.
  22. Besides always wanting one this is the reason I took on my Cadillac project. Probably not a smart move but when people ask about the car, I can say that I did that. Hence the saying “BUILT NOT BOUGHT” If profit was my goal, the wise decision would have been to part the car out. To part the car out I would need storage for the massive number of parts and the ability to sit on them and market them for 10 years or who knows how long. What is the market for 36 Pierce Arrow or pre-war Cadillac parts?
  23. Eight years ago, I acquired a 32 Cadillac V12. It looked to be in worse condition than Ed’s Pierce Arrow. The Cad had been stored in a garage for the last 50 years. The wood body frame was 90% solid. Rust was limited to the bottom of three doors. Fenders were dented, running boards were trash, all chrome had left the building, Glass and interior ratted. The V12 had a broken piston and severely scored cylinder. I was advised to run from this project and run fast. Me, not good at following good advice took on this project. In hindsight, I think this should of became a parts car. Where do you draw the line as a parts car or project car? Eight years ago Eight Days ago
