  1. Always thought these were nice little convertibles, especially the ones that came with wood paneling. I'd keep it an putz around for the summer at a minimum.
  2. Plus the price of everything else has gone up 2, 3, 4........10 times since the 50's.
  3. My choice would be to find a nice 80's Caprice, LeSabre, Olds 88 or Pontiac Bonneveille/Parisienne. "Classic" but still usable as an every day driver. I had a '79 Pontiac with the 301 i it and easily got 21-22 mpg on the highway.
  4. I have subscribed to Old Cars for about 20 years and every renewal I say I"m not going to renew, but somehow I always thin of a reason to continue but it definitely is not what it used to be.
  5. We're here in sunny Florida; arrived February 1. It's been beautiful. We've been working in the yard planting flowers and doing some clean-up. I gave the car a good bath and quick waxing yesterday and it looks terrific. Talked with our son back in Maine earlier this afternoon. He had just finished blowing out our driveway and said there was easily 24". We used to get at least one storm a year like this, usually during February vacation. This storm only seems huge because we haven't had one this big in quite a long time. Im just glad Im in Florida, waiting for the AACA Southen Winter meet in Lakeland in a couple of weeks.
  6. My uncle bought a 1990 Lesabre Limited sedan in 2001 with 63K on it. Florida car, red with red velour interior, painted white roof, wire wheels, etc. For some reason, I really liked that car. Unfortunately, he totaled it in 2005 with only 73K showing. I would not mind finding a nice low mile original like it.
  7. I'm in Florida for a few months; my cars are back home in the cold of Maine but I wish they were here with me.
  8. Pete, so sorry to hear about your mother. I haven't been on the forum lately and just saw the post.
  9. I use my pointer, middle and ring finger on each hand and can move along pretty well and pretty much without looking.
  10. Re: Helfens post - All anyone has to do is look at the Canadian Pontiacs built on the Chevrolet chassis from '59-'64 and you'll see what Bunkie was talking about.
  11. Don't think I ever noticed how low the gas filler appears on the fender on these cars.
  12. My favorite is Chevrolet's "Heartbeat of America" and "Baseball, apple pie and Chevrolet". Some of those commercials would bring me to tears, really.
  13. We're all assuming it's from Pontiac, Cadillac or GMC since that's the dealership it came from, but could it be from another manufacturer? At 43", it's got to be part of a bumper or hood molding.
  14. Actually, the rear view looks more like a '60 Olds to me than a '60 Pontiac. I didn't care for the Plymouth or Dodge in '62, but I like them now because of their uniqueness.
  15. I see a lot more '59 Buicks than '59 Pontiacs, so I would go with the Pontiac. I think it looks better and mechanically it is more conventional.
  16. Is it the grille molding that goes on the hood of a '58 Pontiac?
  17. Steve, I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it was all green - not a dark green vinyl roof either, more the color of the car. I'll have to remember this and see if I can find a '69 Chevy sales catalog at the Eastern meet in Lakeland next month. Now I'm curious.
  18. Nancy - funny you should mention the temps in Fairbanks. We just got a belated Christmas card from my wife's cousin in Fairbanks and she mentioned being able to get outside and do things now that the winter solstice had passed and temps had warmed up 40° to a high of 0° !
  19. My aunt and uncle had a '69 Impala coupe - same forest green but it had a green vinyl roof and green cloth interior (and powerglide). When my cousin got her driver's permit, my aunt asked me to go out driving with her because my uncle didn't have the time or patience to go out with her. They traded it for a new '75 Chrysler Cordoba which turned out to be a big mistake. They traded the Cordoba in on a '78 Olds 98 which they still owed when my uncle passed in 1985.
  20. Hard to believe that Continental was once "too new" for Hershey! I assume it still exists somewhere.
  21. Oh, speaking of trading - on one of my summer jobs during college, I worked with an older man - probably in his mid-50's at the time - who traded a red/black vinyl roof '67 Malibu SS396 for a new '70 Maverick, 6 cyl. with 3 on the tree. All of us "kids" who worked there thought he was out of his mind.
  22. Well, let's see - the 1956 Chevy 210 V8 powerglide 4 door hardtop my grandfather had, traded in 1968 for a '63 Impala. He sold the '56 with 80K on it for $75.00. I also passed on a 1961 Lincoln Continental Convertible for $650 in 1969, one owner 41K on it. The year before my uncle took a 1961 Impala 4 door hardtop in trade, that had a 348 w/Turboglide, PS, PB, PW, PSeats, AC, Autronic Eye, 34K for $600. When my uncle passed away in 1976, my aunt sold his 1968 Impala Custom Coupe with buckets and console, 327, PG, PS, PB, AmFm radio, 81K for $400. I passed on the 1961 Lincoln and the 1961 Impala because I was in college and needed something easier on gas. I ended up with a Corvair which cost me more in repairs than either the Lincoln or Chevy would have cost me in gas.
  23. Hi Guys - I was looking at the meet info - printed off the brochure - to take to Florida with me and at almost the same time, happened to notice the advertisement for Zephyr Hills in Old Cars Weekly. They are the same weekend. I'm really disappointed because I have heard a lot about the Zephyr Hills Winterfest and wanted to take that in as well. Won't having both on the same weekend affect attendance or are there enough cars and people to go around?
