David_Leech
28 standard six, is the oil to the filter full flow or bypass back to the sump? Oil pressure drops to 15 psi when warm at an idle. Thinking of installing an oil cooler to keep the oil pressure up closer to the 40 psi it is when cold, inline with the filter
nearchoclatetown
Filter is bypass and 15 is good. Be happy.

Spinneyhill
I wish my DC had that sort of oil pressure at hot idle! As nearchoclatetown said, Be Happy! I am using 5W-40 CI-4 oil.
maok
I get 15psi at 30mph regardless of what oil I use. Don't ask what I get at idle...:(
David_Leech
Honestly don't know what's in this engine. Previous owner changed the oil before I bought it. A put a bottle of Lucas in it, oil pressure didn't change. Good to hear my oil pressure is on the high side. Engine must be in good shape. Runs like a top and quiet as can be
Kenendcindyc
Those are the Exact oil pressure numbers i get running 5w-40 oil. Perfectly normal, The pressure relief valve opens at 40 psi when adjusted correctly. I believe the manual states 5 psi hot idle, I can get down to 10 psi when oil is HOT at idle after about 100 miles at 50 mph on a hot day.

BITOG: Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer BITOG: The Story With Additives I checked the oil recommended in 30s and 40's owners and service manuals and Chrysler recommended 30-grade oils for ambient temperatures above 32°F and 40-grade oils for average daytime temperatures of 90+°F. Any modern 40-grade Heavy Duty Engine Oil (eg 15W-40) would be suitable for your engine for summertime use. The old straight grade oils had very low Viscosity Indexes so a 10W-30 HDEO would also be suitable for summertime use. If you use a 30-grade oil and it too results in 40 psi at elevated RPMs, then more oil is getting to the bearings than being relieved back to the sump.
