ASHEVILLE MEET....JULY!!!

Steve, Steve, Steve...... time to take a chill pill......

Those of us that need to sell pencils on the street corner to raise funds for these meets cannot register for all meets at the same time. Cindy and I just dropped a grand for Virginia Beach....... and we still have Dover on the horizon.

We are going to Asheville...... but still have a month to register!

Steve,

My guess........ members are being more selective as to which shows they will attend. As I here it, many are cutting back for various reasons..... the cost of fuel is a biggie. I know that soon, Cindy and I are going to need to take a closer look at how many shows we can attend. Our income is not keeping pace with our expenses........ mostly due to the fuel cost and all of the trickle down effect that it is causing on most prices.

We understand the cost factor well.

Virginia Beach was the first National Meet we have attended.... and we loved it! We had a great time and would like to continue attending National Meets. Even before Virginia Beach, we were talking about attending the Asheville Meet. However, we will also have to consider the cost factor for a meet so close in time to the last one.

The cost factor wouldn't be bad for us if it was just Di and I. However, we also have to consider our daughters. Our youngest is 14 and our oldest is chronologically 19 (although her learning disability places her mental development at about 8-10 years). They like attending the AACA events and have participated in the youth activities. Unfortunately they are above the AACA youth prices (under 12) and paying for 4 adults gets very pricey for Di and I. We'll see how the funds are going as the weeks pass. Hopefully we will still be able to make the meet in Asheville.

We attended the 2004 Divisional Tour in Hendersonville, North Carolina hosted by the Great Smokey Mountain Region. It was a superbly organized event and we had a blast during the whole time. Knowing the GSMR is hosting the Asheville Meet, I am sure that the meet will be just as fun and enjoyable as their tour was.

I would very much like to be there and meet some of y'all. However... I'd have to keep a trip to Asheville area top secret because just as soon as plant management found out I was going, I'd get assigned to visit the Asheville station's new pollution control equipment- again. Upside is I might be able to submit the whole trip on expenses <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> but we all know how that works.

I guess me old Ninety Eight would make the trip. If not, I'd drive a daily and just spectate.

We agree with Steve...where the heck are all of you???? Lots of you can come up with excuses but those just turn into alibis....this is going to be one of the best meets of the entire 2006 season and if you miss it, you will be sooo sorry, as well you should. By the way...where were all of you this past weekend when the Central Texas Region hosted the meet in Waco, TX.? It was one SUPER GRANDE MEET! I hope you have to eat tacos and enchiladas for the next 50 years for not being there!! Nah...that's too good for you!

ppaquet,

As you know, the Harvey 3 have already mailed our registration for Asheville. I can't believe how the price of fuel and the cost of these events is starting to put a real bite in our family budget. Unless something big changes soon, we will need to cut back in 2007. As a very active committee member for the Monte Carlo Nationals, I know that the price of fuel has really hurt our attendance......... and we only have 1 meet per year! Just my .02 ...... but I don't think the current costs for transportation and the events are going to help attract more younger members.

Steve/All,

Those of us in the West have been stuck with 1000 or more mile one way drives to western AACA meets for years and also $1000 or more fuel and motel costs due to distances between AACA regions big enough to host meets. That's a prime reason why meet attendance is small for most western meets. And also a reason why many who attend from long distances away either fly or drive modern.

With $3 to $4 a gallon fuel, it may be time to expect that any time a meet is more than a day's drive ( or a couple of tanks of fuel ) from the center point of major AACA membership population, show car attendance will drop.

But, not having meets away from that center, will cause members to become discouraged/disenchanted with AACA and drop out.

There comes a time when spending the entire family vacation budget on travel to car shows simply won't fly with the others in the family. I suspect that even AACA National Meets will become smaller and have more local ( within one day's drive/two tanks of fuel ) cars in the future.

Having WESTERN Grand National meets EAST of the Mississippi does send a message to western folks.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">The Asheville meet is the same day/weekend as the annual National Buick Club of America meet. It is in Rochester, MN this year and I know alot of the Buick people will be heading there instead of the Asheville show. </div></div>

As is the Walter P. Chrysler Restorer's Club meet in not-too-distant (for me) Willimsburg, VA <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> . . . but this old Mopar guy will be in Asheville, supporting AACA!
