There should be somewhere a tag that would identify the builder of the bus body. It could be anywhere including the firewall, any of the doors, the ceiling in the front of the passenger compartment, rear doors, etc..  It looks like a cab & chassis sent to a body builder.  Could be a company like Blue Bird, etc...

This truck/bus is a good candidate for a resto-mod camper placed on a late model frame and running gear, retaining whichever original finish you prefer - military or civilian.  That would make it safe, comfortable, more easily maintained, and a practical highway driver.

I'm gonna guess it's ex-military, because the pre-50s school buses from around here I've seen weren't that well-crafted. Weren't there a few military bases in AZ back then?

 

Would certainly be a neat vehicle to restore. Aren't there clubs specializing in military vehicles?

Their focus is tanks and armament, but they might know something about a base vehicle like this.
