leomara
I need to drill o hole in a rumble lid for the installation of this cam lock. The roundness is 5/8 of an inch however notice the shaft of the lock is flat on opposite sides obviously to prevent it from turning in a round hole. There must be an easy way of doing this. Suggestions please.
joe_padavano
Unfortunately these sorts of holes are made in sheet metal with a punch and die, not a drill. Search for "double D" punch and die (with the quotes). Here's one example. https://www.amazon.com/TEMCo-TH0358-Double-Punch-Knockout/dp/B077SR7S44/ref=pd_lpo_1?pd_rd_w=2ujiu&content-id=amzn1.sym.116f529c-aa4d-4763-b2b6-4d614ec7dc00&pf_rd_p=116f529c-aa4d-4763-b2b6-4d614ec7dc00&pf_rd_r=YZHPBDKRFEPQ7MC8S7YF&pd_rd_wg=2bhPj&pd_rd_r=a81521d9-87f4-4a01-a18f-a67e27109644&pd_rd_i=B077SR7S44&psc=1
leomara
Hey Joe, just taught me something I suspected existed but did not know the name. Non the less I'm going to attempt a work-around rather than spend that kind of money on a once in a lifetime usage tool. Thank you.
keiser31
Cut a rectangle in it and use a half-round file to finish the job.
leomara
Great work-around! Though, cutting a nice rectangle hole may be a challenge itself.
PFitz
I've had to do those when making doors for new display cases, back when I worked in a large museum system exhibits department. Drill a hole equal to the flat-to-flat size of the lock barrel. Then using a triangular file make that round hole square. Then using a rattail or half round file, round out opposite ends to the diameter of the lock barrel. The files are not expensive and can be used for many other projects/repairs. 3makes
A half round file is not half round. Make an open hole paper template of the body of the lock and fasten the pattern in the location of the lock. Then file the hole to template.
Pete O
A little tack weld maybe to hold it in place?
DFeeney
My Ex Mother-In-Law ( May she rest in peace) could have stared the hole in place.
