Wait, wait, wait.  You have an Audi Ute in the states?  As a 14-year Subaru Baja owner and two-time A4 owner, I need details!

Here you go:

Matt , How did the truck do in the parade ?

Funny you should ask--we just got home. The truck turned in a flawless performance. It turns out that 1st gear + 4.56 rear gears + 600 RPM idle = human walking speed. I just let it idle for a mile and it kept pace with the rest of the parade without issues. It was about 40 degrees out, so not freezing but the truck stayed comfortable inside with the heater on low. I had my friend Scott with me who is an actual NASA rocket scientist and he was really enjoying the ride--I think the primitive technology was refreshing for him. I was very pleased with the way the truck behaved, but I still haven't had a chance to really drive it since we fixed the wobbly wheel. The 3-mile drive from our shop to the parade was at about 20 MPH so all the decorations didn't blow off, and the same going home. I really want to put it through its paces and see how it feels at speed. Maybe I'll have time later in the week.

Here are some photos:

Aaaannnnd one more time back to North Carolina so they can put a sticker on it. THEN maybe I get a title. There is a protracted battle going on with the seller over the cost of shipping it to and from North Carolina twice, but that's a fight he's going to lose should he try to take it to the next level.

Still, kind of ridiculous that they can look at the VIN and say, "Nope, no good," and then for some reason NOT put a sticker on it on the spot. Why did we have to wait two months and make a return journey?

Hopefully I'll get to drive it a bit sometime soon...

If the state built transmissions it would only have two gears: Granny and reverse!

I realize it does not make much sense, but the inspector fills out a report. That report has to go through his or her chain of command for approval. Then, the report goes to another office where the Title section has to approve it and actually issue the title and the State ID number sticker to send back to the inspector for installation on the vehicle. After confirmation that the number has been applied to the vehicle, the title section will then mail the title to the owner. In their defense, the guy was supposed to have taken the vehicle to his local DMV inspector's office or scheduled an appointment for the inspector to stop by his home or shop for the inspection. In that instance, the entire process would have occurred without the vehicle having to be transported anywhere. The inspector would have come to him, inspected it, processed the paperwork, and then come back to him to apply the sticker. The entire transportation process was caused by the prior owner failing to follow the law.

The old tow truck has been invited to the Cleveland Piston Powered Auto-Rama where it's going to be the first thing people see when they walk in. That means that I have to juggle prepping the truck for the show with my Lincoln project which is getting close to being ready to run and drive. Today was easy, I just had Michael, our detailer, take the dually simulators off and spray the wheels satin black. They'll blend in a lot better, both around the wheel lips and through the holes where the white wheels were visible. And actually, I really like the way it looks with the black wheels. But no, the dually simulators will be going back on as soon as the paint is dry. Then we'll clean it up, detail it, and make it look its best for the show. We have a few other Sinclair details to display along with it, including a gas pump, as well as some stuff like a stack of tires and and oil drum. It should look like it's working for a living.

Now the trick will be driving it across town during rush hour to get to the show. Wheeee!

Delivered the tow truck to the IX Center over by the airport without incident. The weather turned moments after we arrived, going from clear to rain to sleet to snow in a matter of minutes. We fortunately got inside and I didn't even need to wipe it off (not that it would matter on this truck). Pulled it in and was directed to our space by a guy who said he was on the selection committee and said that the tow truck was one vehicle he insisted be there. Our spot is front-and-center in front of the refreshment area and near the entrance, so everyone's going to see it. On the downside, the Mustang guys right behind me were none too happy--they had set up their cars as if they were at the head of the row and didn't like the giant tow truck blocking the view of their cars. They even complained to management and asked them to move me to the "Chevy area." Management said, "LOL no." Hopefully no hard feelings there, I just parked where they told me to park.

Show starts Friday so I guess we'll hang out there Friday night, but I want to do some carpentry on my '35 Lincoln on Saturday and Sunday and I don't feel like sitting around at a car show all weekend. We'll see...

Unhappy Mustang guys:

Tow truck 1, Mustangs 0.

It's a major award! We won the truck class.

Also, it was on the news this morning.

Got it out quickly this evening, got it home, put it to bed. The show was surprisingly easy to exit, which is a surprise. Usually this show is a nightmare with idiots doing dumb stuff. It was smaller this year, so maybe that helped. Taking the tow truck was pretty easy--it's not like I have to worry about people touching it.

Hey - I just noticed this:

Did it sell at Hershey?

Not AT Hershey, but to someone who saw it there, so I'll put a point in Hershey's column. It's still in the shop, but it'll be shipping out in the next week or two. Someone wanted it more than I did. They'll have fun with it!
