1938 Buick 90 Series Generator Bracket

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I have a 1938 Buick Limited 90 Series with the 320 Straight 8, at some point down the line the original bracket for the generator was lost or broken and shop in the past poorly made one and I was wondering if anyone has pictures of what theirs looks like all mounted with the original brackets thanks!

Here is some pics of the fresh generator rebuild  before and after and you can see what they did to mount it in the rear of the generator, thanks for the help!

I question the generator itself as much as the brackets.

I was rebuilding a two 37 generators a couple of years ago, and bought 2 or 3 units from members here. A particular part that was elusive to me was a 40 series pulley, which I finally did get. One of my parts generators was a 38. As I recall they hang from the top, instead of mounting from the bottom as on a 37 and also the generator in your picture. I see a boss on your block in the picture that could have held the tail bracket if the generator hung the other way. I am convinced you have the wrong generator. Some other 38 owners can probably confirm. What number is on your generator? That could help identify it. Best of luck finding the parts you need.

Thanks for the response, so I inherited this car from my grandfather and he had a 1937 engine he installed in the car sometime in the 1980s since the original had seized, before he passed away he purchased a 1938 engine and had it rebuilt, this is the engine in the car now that you see, im guessing maybe you are right and the generator may be off of a 1937 and not a 1938 now. There was one picture before the car was restored where I could barely see the generator and it looked like it was upside down in the picture to me

I'm not sure if this helps since it's from the wrong year ('41) and the wrong engine size (248 ci).  However, I had the same reaction as Bloo when I noticed the boss on the block that he mentions.  It sure looks like the boss for the bracket on my '41.

This photo taken during the restoration of a 1938 Century might help. I would expect that Dave Tacheny should have a bracket (and a generator if needed). You can best reach him at 763-427-3460 between 4 and 7 pm Central.

Thanks for the pics guys! That really helps, the car is still a 6 volt car not converted to 12 volts. Ben the two pictures I posted was the before and after I had the Generator rebuilt and restored, thats why it looks like two separate generators. I was actually able to find an original mount with the bolts for a 1938 Generator, now I just have to get the proper generator and I think I found one on ebay that looks to be right:

The slotted adjuster bracket mounts to the radiator-side of the generator ear on one end and I think one of the timing cover bolts at the other end (I need to confirm that).

Yessir that is correct, as of now the adjuster is mounted through one of the bolts on the timing cover

What is on the car now, a '37 generator?  If so, what are the differences?  Is it physically the same size?  Different output amps?

Yes from the research I have now found out it is a 37 generator, not sure on the output, but it is shorter and stubbier then the 38 which is longer and skinnier

According to the Chassis Parts book the original generator for your 1938 Model 90 would have been Delco Remy # 1101055. It appears that the 1101052 was originally for the 1938 and 1939 40 Series, but the book appears to indicate that they should be interchangable. I would check with Dave Tacheny. He would know for sure, and likely has one that would be cheaper than the Ebay one. You could probably get all the brackets and a generator from him cheaper than anywhere else.
