OK: If this ain't all messed up underneath it could be close to the truth. ALWAYS........A close and personal inspection, a good stiff test drive and get it waaaaay up in the air.  I like it if it's solid because one can nibble on it and make it a fantastic and reliable driver which someone can really enjoy.   Mitch

  • 6T-FinSeeker changed the title to For Sale: 1960 Buick LeSabre Hardtop - "Good running & driving two-tone classic" - Chatfield, MN - Not Mine

I've got an old Motor Trend magazine from June 1972 that that gives a pretty good overview of exactly how the Earl Scheib operation worked. Back then the $29.95 standard service covered the 27 basic colors that they had available. The Scheib Co. made their own paint. If you wanted red, metallics, or an actual match to your factory color that cost $39.95. You got a car wash and only very basic prep work. The article stated that the more prep work you did yourself (sanding, filling of dents & holes and trim removal) the better the finished product. Most repaints were finished the same day. MT took 2 cars to 2 different SoCal shops  (undercover of course) and reported the results in the article. In general they were very satisfied with the results and concluded it was well worth the $29.95 to have your car repainted as long as you didn't expect perfection. You might not know that The Earl backed up his work with a guarantee of a free paint job if there was any oxidation or fading within 5 years. They also claimed the synthetic enamel paint they used never needed waxing. I've posted the first and last paragraphs of the 2-page article. The whole story was pretty interesting.

As time went on the Scheib $29.95 price only got you one color, a rather sickening blue green. Anything else cost more. I had my first car, a 55 Ford Victoria, painted at a local knockoff quick - paint shop. I did all the body work, spot priming, removed most of the trim and masked a lot myself. I paid extra for a primer coat and Rangoon Red paint plus slipped the painter an advance tip so they masked a little better and put on some extra paint. They sprayed the steel wheels including the tires then painted the tires with black rubberized paint! I'm pretty sure they also ran the car through a room with heat lamps to dry it and I got a pint of matching touchup paint, all for less than $100. I kept that car for at least four Illinois years as a daily driver and it still looked good when I sold it.

You sure got your money's worth there, looks like a pretty decent paint job. That $10 worth of free metal work from Earl Scheib today might get you an extra blow from a body hammer against a dolly and not much else.

Prior to my properly restoring it a year later,

Back in 1965, I had my 1948 MG-TC painted at the Earl Scheib shop in Elizabeth, NJ.

They would sometimes run a $19.99 special which fit my budget.

Their green paint would hopefully have been close to Brittish Racing Green (BRG),

but it actually came out looking like a shiny Dill Pickle !

Even so, it held while I finished college, got a full time job, and completed a more proper restoration over the next couple of years.

This LeSabre looks to be a decent entry level car,

BUT I WOULD WANT THE BUYER TO GET A GOOD LOOK UNDERNEATH FOR RUST, CONSIDERING THAT IT IS IN MINNEAPOLIS!
