Restore my buick electra 1969 :)

Then at the same time I took care of reproducing the electrical diagram for the telescopic antenna.

I did the test with an electric motor from a fountain pump

20220917_121605.jpg.5b424da982d7310323eb93dff0044a0b.jpg

So here is where I am at the moment, it doesn't seem like it takes time to do, as well as the waiting time for the various things to take to do

The next steps in order will be:

- See what to put as a product in the cigarette lighter to be able to reassemble it

- set up (not too visible but visible to the driver) under the dashboard of the oil pressure gauge

- make the electrical diagram of the antenna clean and reassemble it definitively

- cleaned and checked the front seat and reassembled the seat

- reassembly of the rear seat

- installation of interior panels between the doors

- reassembly of door sills

Until then, I have everything that is almost ready.

On the other hand, once this is done, it will be the reassembly of the door panels and the door seals.

But for that I first have to find the window seals for the 4 doors :/

I may have found the seal attached to the rear window to joint with the front window, but I will miss it, it's famous window seal.

It's taking all that time for something as mundane as an ashtray that makes your restoration so great! Keep going!

thank you very much zipdang, it's nice :) .
Yes small parts also take time to work, and I like that :)
I will continue this weekend and I will put other photos soon :)

hello to all, here is some news from this weekend's work on the Buick :)

This weekend two small steps we were done and started (or continued) with this telescopic antenna that had to be adapted like the original electrical diagram

I submit the photo of the electrical diagram which allows my new antenna to be used with the original electrical diagram from 1969

20220917_121605.jpg.1e3aa3577dddaba4d57285026780c29e.jpg

I then modified this diagram to use only the two + of the original diagram of the Buick, with a mass.

That way there is no extra cable.

Then I shorten the cables and I put all that in a box that will be hidden behind the antenna.

I wanted to take a very simple box but I only had an electrician's electrical box in the garage, and it was "DIY" but I didn't have much choice since I only had that.

SAM_4331.JPG.03e35d33781c49d221f2e6441d8e1c8e.JPG

Then paint black

SAM_4333.JPG.c0c0008f4c6bfaedc80ebd88c601cf6f.JPG

SAM_4334.JPG.bb868dae16fd470f12453abc2bf20339.JPG

SAM_4335.JPG.2e18f61b3ed438a80aca0672ecf9df0c.JPG

Then I have to take the dimensions of the wires that come out to be able to solder the terminals to them, ...

SAM_4844.JPG.daf9c293ff25a2b69eb39d728b545089.JPG

The wiring is ready to be sheathed and put in place

SAM_4845.JPG.0433d5751157c5ab9b8ea2ad3e2dee96.JPG

Next is the antenna.
I remove the electrical circuit and its wiring and I only keep the motor with its electrical wires, and I solder them to the power supply input wire of the antenna directly

SAM_4338.JPG.92a2ec7971792ca6fcf4eab5f68102cc.JPG

Then then fixing the whole thing, and testing :)
I wanted to put a video from the antenna on, but I can't put the video.
The antenna works very well :)

Then second small steps made, the installation of the oil pressure gauge.

I like that it's entirely original and I didn't (at all) want to put these pressure gauges which I think are more suitable for a sports coupe like a Camaro for example. But at the same time I don't want to one day to realize too late that I have an oil pressure problem, and even if this oil pressure problem and especially for the 455 and not for the 430, I prefer to have an eye on the pressure oil anyway.

In this kit there was included the oil pressure and water temperature gauge, and even if for the moment the water temperature gauge will not be connected, I prefer to leave it in place just in case. .

So already that it is mano are not original, there is no question of making holes to fix them, and I will therefore manufacture a support which is fixed by the screws of the dashboard to the original frame.

Try with cardboard

SAM_4846.JPG.51ad6a89938954c8d91f7fcc8a9a5119.JPG

Then in sheet metal, with a bend at both ends in relation to the shape of the rail where the dashboard is fixed, and the two holes in the middle will be for fixing the pressure gauges on this support

SAM_4847.JPG.bafe3c6cbe80ef7e987abef215307315.JPG

SAM_4848.JPG.c3c6aa30066fd0b6d97b051fe5c92747.JPG

Then paint

SAM_4849.JPG.753fc1156da355642ccac93ff19edefd.JPG

SAM_4850.JPG.01a5e21e13a90539af0cf82ea5991900.JPG

And setting up the assembly, I put it here, as far as possible to the left of the dashboard rail so that it is visible for the driver, but that we don't see it too much from outside, and to that it does not bother the passengers with the feet

SAM_4851.JPG.ee34ea599a5b065ee01b86063a5f1a67.JPG

SAM_4855.JPG.5bc8d0d6b671cbf73e0058cb90ec10bd.JPG

On the photo we see that, but in reality we forget it a little with the space in the cabin.

No hole was made to fix it.

SAM_4857.JPG.cb43e60377d5354c5c60987e255efbd0.JPG

So here are two small steps, and the next will be for the cigarette lighter, to find how to block the bare sheet metal while maintaining electrical continuity, and then it will be the reassembly of the seats ! :)

Then in the meantime I went to a big sale of parts of old tractors and old cars, and exhibition of old vehicles in Caussade, for the "tractomania".
And there was a very nice Buick (with a rust effect patina, it's not real rust, it's paint)

And I bought this

It is nice to see the Electra is getting closer to completion.  I see that both you and your parents have good taste in automobiles!  ;)

Thanks for the pictures of the Vista Cruiser - I like those too and that looked like a nice one!

Hello everyone, here is some news from the Buick since that time :)

Since this summer I had not reassembled the last window that remained, that of the rear passenger side because of its seal fixed on the chrome strip because it was in poor condition and I did not know if I could find it new and how to dismantle it.

Well, to dismantle it, it's very easy, it's in a slide and you just have to pull it down, and this seal is found and I have a new one, but it's not quite like it. the original one.

SAM_4861.JPG.7befea3cdd19623d16b331a3fa714fd7.JPG

And set up

SAM_4863.JPG.7fd88267fe6b18f302ea1c62a1945d7f.JPG

Then, from the beginning the really hard thing found on my Electra are front brake discs.

So for the record, the disc brakes for my Electra was an option produced by "Bendix" and this option was only available for 2 without (by the Bendix brand, the Electra according to one had to be equipped by another brand but does not fit on mine).

This option was rare, so much so that among the 4 or 5 well-known American car breakers in America, I did not know this option and told myself that they were equipped with drum brakes.

I have been researching since I have the car (since 2013), and indeed it is not found, we only find "Adaptable for..." models (36 models combined, for Buick, Desoto, Renault, Lada and Lamborghini :/ ), in other words, it's not even worth ordering.

According to some research, for the "rare" 69 Electra equipped with disc brakes in America, the garage was already in the late 70s and early 80s bothered to change discs and pads because they were no longer available.

My two Electras have disc brakes, because mainly for new period imports the vehicles were well equipped.

Strangely, there are new brake pads for my Bendix calipers but the discs are not found.

I don't think Bendix distributed the discs for 2 years only for Buick, they must also have been equipped with other brands from the GM group, but since I have no comparison list, I cannot know other references and know if other brands were equipped with it.

I could maybe put a replacement kit that includes another flange and new caliper but it would not be original, and I prefer if possible to keep the original assembly.

For the calipers with 4 pistons each, the cylinders were a bit marked. So I had the cylinders rebuilt and custom pistons made for both calipers, so I keep my Bendix calipers :)

For the discs, I had to ask the American mechanic that I know if he could take care of it.

So he also saw that it was impossible to find and he offers me to have a replica of my discs made on Oldsmobile discs from 1986.

So he has someone do that but they don't take everything into account as measurements, and once my new discs were in place, they touched the hub flange before the bearings were on the hub. So it's screwed for these new discs.

So he looks at my original discs and he tells me that with a little surfacing it's good they can start again.

So after all this time, the car had to stay on hold and these last weekends I was finally able to put it back on the wheel :)

I would have liked to put new discs that shine, but this is not the case since they are the original ones, they have just been degreased, and a colleague advised me not to paint them,... :(

Then a colleague came by to give me a hand.

Installation of new bearings with their cages :)

Then we go back to the interior, with the reassembly of the cigarette lighter

SAM_4926.JPG.7d9dc3ec2e5b5ea1e1c1f4f627195674.JPG

Then I took care of the front seat :) , it's been 7 years since the restoration started, and it's been 7 years since the seat was in the Buick.

And so it's nice to take care of it now :)

After almost a day of cleaning the bench, in the "pocket" that can be seen in the photo below, I found some small money :D

SAM_4913.JPG.67efa2a2d81189cd28d792e2613524b4.JPG

1 Franc 1960 and 1976

SAM_4922.JPG.b1f9fbaf298074d04eafbe72b54cb139.JPG

Then the bench finished, we must not forget that the fabric dates from 1969, it is in good condition but it will not be perfect in some places, but overall for the origin of 69 it is good  :)

SAM_4924.JPG.edaa56dfaf0be0bdc553046259794ae4.JPG

Then cleaning of the belts (1h30 of cleaning for both :D )

Before / after

Cleaning finished :)

SAM_4937.JPG.680bffa5e95dab13abe515645cdbf78e.JPG

Then, I had received a small order, the stickers for the rocker covers and new spark plugs :)

SAM_4909.JPG.943612010edb8968c17bbf74cd7c7888.JPG

SAM_4929.JPG.f184593569d2f7ffac091a38a655cae1.JPG

When the Buick was at the bodybuilder, they started it every day several times at short notice, so the starter and the spark plugs are very dirty, and since they date from 2013, I told myself that I would go rather change them like that I'm on new.

So indeed my candles were dirty as I had been told, but my new candles are not like the ones there were, but they work very well :)

Then for Christmas (two years ago if I'm not mistaken) my parents gave me this beautiful Buick carpet for my Electra :)

Available in blue, red or brown (if I remember correctly what they told me :D ), they are very good quality and very thick :)

I'm very happy, and it's been 7 years since the interior was assembled and here it is almost finished :)

For the interior to be finished, I still have to reassemble the door sills (which must be cleaned), and the door panels, they are ready, but for me to be able to reassemble them, I must first find the seals. new exterior window licker to mount all this :)

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is probably the biggest contributor to degradation of the fabric and vinyl.  If you store the car in a garage it should be fine.  The amount of UV exposure a classic car receives is typically much less than that a daily driver has to endure.  Just remember to remove the screwdriver from your pocket before getting into the car...  ;)

Yes it is true that ultraviolet radiation do a lot of damage.
My first car was a 1994 Peugeot 306, it was in a sheltered garage and the fabrics were in very good condition.
Then I had a 2006 BMW 318D and as in the garage there was the Buick, the BMW was sleeping outside and in a little while the black fabric changed color, and the black rear shelf had become "red".
Now all my cars are safe ;)
And yes you have to be careful with the screwdriver in the pocket ! :D

Hello everyone, here is the rest of the work :)

So still on the interior of the Buick, I took care of the 4 door sills.

To clean them I used Belgom chrome with a polishing pad on a drill.

SAM_4971.JPG.b785c47c6d07473ad254b36c1ef03d1d.JPG

Cleaning of the first threshold

SAM_4974.JPG.b0a71de3793588da4d345ac743e83555.JPG

then the second threshold, as we can see they are a little tarnished

SAM_4976.JPG.0c9df8c5c60f5cb1e9750cb144c86526.JPG

Some damaged like here, and that will have to be straightened afterwards

SAM_4978.JPG.6872d38c6a363b22e98a1ac0f48dac9d.JPG

With remnants of paint when the Buick was painted blue at the time, which will also have to be cleaned

SAM_4980.JPG.7ac8a1ba11e2eb696315d05423504443.JPG

Here we see the difference between the before / after, only the upper part is made on this photo, on the right part

SAM_4982.JPG.f8fe767793ad7406fd677630a5e5594f.JPG

Then cleaning done

SAM_4985.JPG.5fe1062d1d9b6e59bf4cc1752f5a48fc.JPG

Then cleaning the other two

SAM_4987.JPG.2df7e9df3ee9ea734f78e8e5ec3036fd.JPG

SAM_4990.JPG.174fb009b29fde2c5a1fa6060e1c7c65.JPG

SAM_4993.JPG.8bb4f17105b79821b300aa0c40fb6f8f.JPG

The 4 thresholds are close, and night falls, the reassembly will be for the next day

SAM_5001.JPG.5e4d2da6128f9ade0f6b930ea6de6c76.JPG

And reassembly (I just saw that I forgot to take a picture of one of the sills)

SAM_5002.JPG.18b3ca6575750a8d6c0e7d6210549a29.JPG

SAM_5011.JPG.48ce7ae913ad9f9ba4b5d26561fdb99f.JPG

So here we are, there is now only one step left for the interior to be finished, the door panels.

And as said above, the problem is that to reassemble the door panels I have to find the seals "window sealers" (French name for this part) outside which are not found.

And for these joints, you advised me a website, and I found this website too.
The problem is that they don't look like the original seal, and I may have to buy adaptable seals.

Good evening everyone, here is some news from the Buick :)

Already to start, I bought my Buick in 2013 and we are in 2023, it will be 10 years that I have my Buick ! :), and in November it will be (unless it is finished before) 8 years that I work on it :)

It's last time I worked on the door of a friend's Cadillac.
And since I still haven't found the seals for the windows, I still can't reassemble the door panels.

And so I continued with the ventilation grilles which are in the frame of the rear doors :)

And as you can see they are not in superb condition.

Cleaning with soapy water as well as its seal

SAM_5186.JPG.49f938822918e23b460ac01acdebaa18.JPG

then the second grid

SAM_5187.JPG.fe12f6ce065487b654440a5dbd6c9371.JPG

This one is broken here and the piece is therefore made

Cleaning

Then I use bi-component glue, with a product to put on one side, glue on the other and once the two sides touch, it takes very quickly. Then I put the glue back on but this time I put powder on top, which has the effect of hardening the glue immediately.

SAM_5202.JPG.1ef73ab136cb65f77d53596a2cb360f4.JPG

For this grid, I still had the long piece at the bottom, so I glued it

SAM_5203.JPG.aa67d69334fa152f360b703038fdda72.JPG

Then here some plastic was missing, so I finished it with body filler, which will be sanded down afterwards.

SAM_5205.JPG.b02b5c2a5f2e5469a507be405a90c8fa.JPG

Then the time it dried I took care of the second grid, which no longer has the missing piece.

Then looking for how to do, I see this old laptop that I had to recover. And I see that part of its fairing looks a lot like what I'm looking for :)

So adjustment and installation :) , more than the sanding will be missing to adjust the alignment

SAM_5213.JPG.1941f6434ca2fc8bb6d98a945b1cad38.JPG

Then there is also a piece missing here

SAM_5214.JPG.b3f2f6a898efc2b78bb32228eb75cd7c.JPG

Installation, also sanding will be necessary to round the part towards the fixing point of the grid

SAM_5215.JPG.0486c0b52b8974a02d89143e447bf737.JPG

Then in the meantime I go back to the first grid, and sanding

  • 4 weeks later...

Good evening everyone, here is some news from the Buick :)

At the moment it's going slower because I'm working on several vehicles at the same time, on my 69 Buick, my parents' Buick 41, my 78 Dodge, a friend's 69 Cadillac and on my godfather's Renault 5 Alpine. . And the weekends are so busy :D

So for the Buick, here is the little evolution of the works.

For the window seals, it's finally ordered, there is no remanufacture and it's therefore adaptable models that come closest to the origin, I'll see...

But for the window seals I have to mount the strips from the top of the doors, but the strips are in stainless steel and the part of the font is in chrome. And this chrome (Zamak) is pitted / damaged.

So disassembly (we can see that the inside of the wand needs a good cleaning)

SAM_5275.JPG.7e2e71e303ad32d90f9f3e89a516eac1.JPG

SAM_5277.JPG.9e60d730b7483dd5618d47eddbdbe2d7.JPG

SAM_5279.JPG.47a2728a934cacf53b8db81af06716ac.JPG

SAM_5280.JPG.e449087bac4899b1d2638ad0273adab8.JPG

then the second (this is only for the rear doors)

SAM_5281.JPG.4b77526ba334de6584fbd98fac626bfb.JPG

SAM_5282.JPG.1d7ad8d63dcabc9e6eb68760c8fa8384.JPG

And when dismantling it, the zamac broke on the junction part :( , I blamed myself for it all weekend because it was because of me.

This one was more crimped than the other and I didn't want to damage the stainless steel rod by forcing it on (I was able to loosen it but not enough), and when I took it apart it came well but at the same time. end I accidentally tilted the piece and it broke :(

SAM_5286.JPG.e1139a89eddf1dac8ffb7ab209518005.JPG

SAM_5285.JPG.047e038384b65757e804e40ae8153bc2.JPG

But it's two parts went to a part chrome plating company to redo them, and apparently this company resolders the zamac :)

And while waiting to receive the window seals and the two chrome pieces, I worked in the trunk, and to start I took care of the electrical harness in the trunk lid :)

Then here are other parts that make up the trunk lid but I haven't worked on that yet.

The trunk lock cover

SAM_0861.JPG.2d658669ba9896a363dc2a235b6a9248.JPG

With its seal still in good condition but if I can find it new it will be better

SAM_0862.JPG.d864328c5e0ae431b9f1020eb8179df1.JPG

SAM_0863.JPG.5fd4d28987d62272b81c88133698506b.JPG

And the license plate light

SAM_0890.JPG.a4edeed0b0d137f174ffb0b5f8fafe76.JPG

The plastic is normally transparent, but I may have a solution to fix it

SAM_0891.JPG.a5297aa49acd5ac0e175fc83ef9643b6.JPG

Its white seal which has shrunk so much that it is no longer waterproof

SAM_0892.JPG.256671fab4d1c6ca9d0abcd350e56409.JPG

SAM_0893.JPG.7351c5e2f5155cd6ced88b6a28cfdb30.JPG

Disassembly

SAM_0895.JPG.aee04176acc9b29c68a479a3a5442d4c.JPG

His white joint which is very tired

SAM_0897.JPG.0ca03bef342ed92ba9812462a7ae5858.JPG

SAM_0898.JPG.528971a1d3f44ceff3fdf8b3143c3494.JPG

So for the moment I haven't touched it, and I will put the photos back when I work on it.

But there I have to find its new white seal with its black base seal to start this.

So I leave aside for the moment the time to find it's two seals (and if not I will manufacture it), and I continue with the installation of the electrical harness and the light bulb socket of the chest

SAM_5297.JPG.3e7cbd96fe438a7a3fd4c6b8a75d208f.JPG

paint on the harness attachment that had tarnished

Then I started looking for the cardboard lining of the trunk.

Mine which are original are not in superb condition as you can see

SAM_5303.JPG.8cb9785e71209226921e22e69debd0aa.JPG

I will therefore have to find a solution, I buy new ones or I make new ones

While waiting to find a solution for this, I continued with the rear lights with its license plate holder

SAM_5333.JPG.c561210341759870d3bf8db52d05e707.JPG

And I start with the license plate holder, and as we can see the plate is not centered

SAM_5334.JPG.a995dc01abb61bf33064a352a3b1ee06.JPG

So I remove the plate and the condition of the support is not in good condition

SAM_5336.JPG.0eaf06fb1dfc65eac9b263b916e73e81.JPG

I therefore dismantle the license plate support from its support

SAM_5337.JPG.27bcdf92b6e9c66d92af13e7b014409f.JPG

As you can see it is tarnished and the spring is rusty

I spray paint "GO Chrome" inside the headlights.

I had already painted it with a chrome "effect" paint in 2013 maybe and you can clearly see the difference between the chrome "effect" paint and the chrome paint with mercury that Go Chrome sells.
