Rusty_OToole
Interesting that REO shared parts with Duesenberg. Wonder which parts, and how this came about? Was it a coincidence, as they were buying parts for the same size car from the same suppliers? Or was there some connection between REO and Duesenberg? alsancle
No connection other than they both were big cars so there was a natural need for some of the same components. I just found out the other day that while the two cars do not share distributors they do share the same dual points.
Rusty_OToole
I read here years ago that there was a make of hearses in the thirties that used Duesenberg chassis. Bought from Duesenberg, equipped with generic motors and sold under their own name. Don't know the details of that deal either but it sounds interesting, if true. alsancle
Good thinking Jason. My color is a couple of shades darker trending towards black in the dark light. This car sat untouched for 50 years. I understand a teenager owned it in the 1950 and had painted the vents red to jazz it up. Would have been a cool high school car. alsancle
The nicely restored (although slightly incorrect) 8-35 Sedan at Pebble sold for 100k as noted in another thread. Here is a period shot of the same model car.
edinmass
Interesting photo, chrome side mount covers and black wall tires. AJ must be loving this photo!
alsancle
Ed, the chrome outer cover and painted inner cover seems to be standard on all 8-35 and above Royale's. Also, 90% of them had blackwall tires but you could make that argument for all Classics in period.
alsancle
Another thing to notice about that picture is the black painted radiator shutters. They came 3 ways, black, body color and chrome. Personally I prefer the black.
vintagerodshop
Thats a good thing. The cost to chrome the shutters and make them straight is very expensive. The last one I did was on a 34 Packard 1107. I shudder to think of the cost. Edited August 23, 2015 by vintagerodshop (see edit history)
alsancle
Kirk, I feel the same way about Duesenberg Model J shutters. The 29 cars came with the exposed black radiator and the chrome shutters were added later on. If I ever get one the shutters are going in a box. alsancle
I'm going to derail my own thread. When I was a kid big Al was in to Eldorados. We had about 5 different ones from 1968 to 1976 as family cars. Always a few years old with low miles. First thing he would do when we got the car was to put wide whites on it. He had one 69 where he bought a chrome nose cone for the hood and a flying lady hood ornament. It looked like Huggy Bear owned the thing. That is what I think of when I see prewar cars with wide white walls.

K8096
Big Al must have enjoyed the Superfly cars exhibit at the AACA museum a couple years ago. http://aya-wavedancer.deviantart.com/art/1971-Dunham-Coach-Corvorado-Diamond-Eagle-395257230 Did Big Al have one with sidemounts and running boards with trailer lights on the side? https://www.flickr.com/photos/that_chrysler_guy/4131099643/ Edited August 24, 2015 by K8096 (see edit history)

vintagerodshop
Unfortunately the restoration would cost more than the value of the car could ever attain. But still a inexpensive full classic if you wanted a survivor car. Some people have much more time than money. I however have neither time nor money. alsancle
If you can get away with some minor mechanics then it would be a decent car for someone. If you want to restore it you are in bad shape. A nicely (but not totally correct) restored and identical model brought 100k at Pebble.
