Maybe it would have been mmore interesting to Unregistered if I had told the story about my 26 Studebaker with a California hardtop. The car hadn't been on the road for many years. I was able to get it running and on New Years Day 1960 my best friend and I took the plates of my 30 Pontiac and went out for a couple of hour drive around Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was ten below zero, we had no glass, no floorboards and no seats. We had a square of plywood balanced across the frame with two upended pails to sit on. Talk about idiot teenagers.
Happy hobbying

Reid,
Your comments about the '26 Studebaker reminded me about the time my brother and I got our '07 Maxwell running for the first time in decades. The car was a 2 cylinder runabout and had rotten tires and a rotted out gas tank. We put new tires on it and the gas tank sealed cleaned off the dirt and cob webs and with my brother working the controls and me working the hand crank we managed to get the car running. It ran rough and we decided to make the fine adjustments with the car at "speed". This involved talking a friend into making the adjustments while squatting on the running board, holding onto the windshield frame as we drove the car around the block with the engine cover removed. We lived in the country and going around the block was about a 3 mile drive. We got a lot of strange looks as we drove past with my brother and I sitting in the car and our friend adjusting the engine as he hung onto the windshield with his free hand in the engine. I don't think I would go about it the same way today, unless I was trying to win a $100,000 stupid home video contest. wink.gif" border="0
[ 06-01-2002: Message edited by: Mark Huston ]

Same thing my pal and I did with our 1906 cross-engined Franklin, The engine was supposedly "rebuilt" and that extended only to the pistons, valves and crank.
After the "work" was done the car still had no carb and we busted our humps installing rayfields, strombergs and finally in a burst of brilliance a schebler.
The original carb was no more than a simple "mixer valve" but we had no pattern to work with.
After much disassembly and double-checking { the outfit that "rebuilt" the motor had folded} we got it to the point that it would run but stumble and stall under load.
After much ado, most of it needless, we managed to extract decent performance with the schebler carb, the adjustments being done" on the wing" while we were driving on Long Island's gold coast near some of the most lavish mansions of the Gatsby age.
Needless to say it was the auxiliary exhaust ports which were completely neglected by the "rebuilders" being " captive balls" that respond to exhaust pressure and are sealed closed during intake stroke.
We had new seats and captive balls installed and after that the car would fly in excess of 55 mph, honest.

Funny... the son and I were just talking about this the other day and started a list. Probably not as interesting as most but they were all mine....
1958 - Morris Minor convert
1961 - Bug-eye Sprite
1967 - Austin Healey Sprite (my only new car - ever)
1962 - Ford Falcon Delux
1960 - Morris Monor coupe (didn't learn)
1964 - Jag XKE convt.
1968 - Austin America
1970 - Allison Daytona dune buggy (DUH!)
1966 - Ford Econoline (former GTE van)
1973 - Mazda RX3 wagon
1980 - Mazda GLC
1969 - Mercury Cougar XL (whatta beast!)
1967 - Ford Mustang convert - 6 cyl.
1977 - Jimmy 4x4
1970 - MGB GT
1978 - Chevy window van (family time)
1988 - Ford Aerostar
1983 - Mazda RX7 (wife's second childhood)
1986 - Ford Crown Vic wagon
1996 - Chevy S10 PU
1993 - Subaru GL10 XT (4wd)
1988 - Ford Bronco II (still have - 165K miles)
1989 - Jeep Cherokee Ltd. (205K miles traded)
1987 - Jeep Wrangler (son's graduation from college gift)
1998 - Subaru Outback (current family)
1929 - X's 2 1929 Ford trucks
This looks more like a used car lot list, but they were all my pride and joy. The 1960's influence shows in all the 'foreign' cars listed plus I wrenched English cars for about 5 years on the side. I believe that's the side that hurts now. Of all these, my current 1929's are my biggest prize because I'm doing them during retirement and enjoying every minute of it. Thanks for giving me an excuse to share.

OOPS! Forgot...
1960 - VW bug (ran forever - fell out of grace)
1968 - VW Baja (bought for oldest son)
1962 - Comet S22 (wish we still had)
These fell somewhere in between the Aerostar and Jag listed before. The former list was pretty much in order of ownership and the year displayed reflects the year of the vehicle only.
'Unregistered' obviously had a lousey or boring bunch of teenage years. Won't have anything to look back on as a senior except maybe 'acid' dreams.

The reason for this probably has to do with my daily drivers. I tend to buy a car with less than 30,000 miles on it but then drive it until it has nearly 200,000 miles and any thought of retail value vanished long ago.
