jscheib
Mystery Buick,I am sure you will get more feedback. If the prefix is 28, it should be a 1928. 1927 does not show a Model 49. I just checked the standard catalog. It shows only 2 of these built, with the more popular 4 door touring being the Model 55, 4 door - 5 pass. So, others should know more then I, but this seems a quite rare car. I am not sure what Canada may have built. You might have questions on the age because it has been mentioned in other threads that in that time period, some parts from prior year models were used for the new models if the parts fit, so there may be bits of a 1927 model on this car. I hope we will hear more on this car (and maybe some photos).John
sean1997
I don't know about the engine number ranges, I'm sure Dave Corbin can answer that, but:28 = 192849 = Model 49 = 7 passenger touring car, 128 inch wheelbase
ROD W
It,s a 1928 engine
unimogjohn
The data plate on the passenger side firewall would say GM of Canada if it was a McLaughlin Buick.

Guest Oracle
Yes, a 128" wheelbase 1928 Model 28-[X]49. which was called the 'Monarch' seven-setare tourer in the UK. Imported by General Motors (Australia) Ltd. From my databook:SERIALS RAN: #138001 TO #143290ENGINE SERIALS: #1990635 TO #22218571928 PRODUCTION STARTED FOR ALL SERIES IN JULY 1927I think Flint-built engines supp;ied to Oshawa and then Regina, for 1929, may have had slightly different serial number runs from Flint-built Buicks but I can now have a go and compare thanks to the new data. jscheib
Oracle,Do you have any info on the pproduction number for these. The "standard catalog" indicates only 2 if I read it correctly? Hence, they must be unique.John

pepcak
To John: Yes, the standard catalogue indicates 2 made, but this counts for Flint (US) production. Seems to me that canadian counterparts were lot more frequent.

pepcak
Yep, as you can see from Sean1997 post the 28-49 type designation actually gives you information that the car is in Master series (274 cid engine, 128" wheelbase) and should carry 7 passenger touring body from factory. You gave us an engine number, serial number should be on the same square plate on firewall. Should be 6 digits, most likely 142... something. jscheib
It sure is "barn fresh". It looks to me that the windshield may be tilted back more then original, which may affect the sagging top. But others may know more then I. I wonder what the original colors were/are. Looks like it was a nice combination.John

dibarlaw
I was thrilled to see this post. And finally see the picture. I should have a photo of a 1928 Master 6 Touring I took at the Hamilton, Ohio car show about 40 years ago. What will the game plan be for its restoration? The only 28 touring car I know of is David Balfarb's 28-25 standard 5 passenger. Its body is nearly identical to my 1925-25. This McLaughlin has a belt molding quite similar to Packard's of the same vintage. I saved the photo to be able to see some more detail and the resulting image in my window is only about 1/2 inch tall and the full screen wide! No saved picture has ever done that before! According to the date the photo was taken it was 01/08 2012. Almost 2 years and the first we have heard anything. Larry
Dave_B
The doors on that car, the 28-49, are longer than they are on mine which is a 28-25, but then it's more than a foot longer than mine too. Very cool car. Where is it located? Dave
trp3141592
Hi,What a SPLENDID Looking car! Looks to me like a good candidate for preservation as opposed to restoration. You'll get more conversation and inquiry from observers with a running preservation than a restoration.Of course, the car is yours as is the decision. Whatever you do with it, have fun and enjoy it!--Tom
Guest Mystery Buick
Larry My father in law had some health issues so everything else went on the back burner. Now we are looking into getting a house .but we plan to start work on the motor in the spring. We might put up some more pictures if we can get them from the camera to this site again.in the meantime we would love pictures and any other news on 28 Buick touring cars. We do believe though that we might have the second one and we have seen the pictures of the first one in the Canadian science museum.Thank youMystery Buick
Dwight Romberger
Some additional info:http://www.prewarcar.com/magazine/quiz-archive/about-quiz-275-1928-mclaughlin-buick-013846.html2010-05-30 20:39 I agree its not a Fisher body, but I would not dare to say its pure custom build too. I would bet there is a brass square badge on right hand side of firewall, that clearly describes this car as Mclaughlin Buick 28-49 (serial# 139645 engine# 2034106), model designation means 7 passenger touring on 128" wheelbase with 274 cid engine. In Antique Automobile Quarterly (Fourth Quarter 1974 - Vol. XII, No. 4 - Pg. 12 & 13) there is a photo of the Prince arriving at City Hall in Toronto on Aug. 6/27 and there are 4 open cars clearly shown. This neg. is on file with the Public Archives in Ottawa (No. C-67205).Model year 1928 run (as usually) from Aug 1st 1927 to July 31st 1928, so in August 1st must have been few thousands cars already built for market launch. Per production records Flint (US) built 2 seven pass tourings under designation 28-49, much more of them were built in Canada as McLauglin Buick, probably few thousands. My 1928 McLaughlin Part List for Master Series shows few thousands exceptions when ordering upholstering and trim materials for 29-49 models ONLY. I have positively identified 5 of them still in existence, below are serial numbers and engine numbers for 4 of them. Note that the sequence of McLaughlin serial numbers (lowest first) of these 4 cars (138575, 139645, 140099, 140320) and the sequence of their respective engines (2013551, 2034106, 2080521, 2091312) is the same, that corresponds Flint engines shipping to Canada. Guest Shoe1932
Maybe I missed it in the above posts, but did anyone find out how many 28 49's were produced in Canada? I know that it was mentioned that 2 were made but if I read everything correctly that was for US production.Just curious.

Dwight Romberger
In this thread, our old friend Dave Corbin made some comments about model 49 production. There was also this "trim by serial number" chart.
