Haven't seen this post in a while. Makes me think a couple things -

1) unless you had money for pros to assist, I wonder how many cars are practical to keep at any one time from a maintenance/time to enjoy perspective? I always figured two while working, maybe 3 upon retirement - but the figure is probably different for everyone depending on what the balance of their particular lives are..

2) For the early posters, would you change your list at all?? Have your interests changed in 3 years or so? I would probably drop one of the '32 roadsters I listed, or both and substitute a smaller brass car like a Hup or any number of Packards. Other than that, I like the list!

I haven't responded because I can't narrow it down to just 18.

Here are 33... (I like to think if you're going to dream, or wish, do it big

West, that's a great list you have there, in fact all the lists are cool. I especially admire

the single-marque ones, even though I'm more of a generalist.

As I don't think I could pare it down to 18 either, here's a start for you, just in time for a holiday delivery...

I think I would remove these from the list: Lamborghini LM 002, Lamborghini Espada, '63 Avanti, '55 T-Bird, and '53 Corvette, and just keep the Miura out of all the post-war stuff. I would replace them with a 1935 Packard 120, a 1910 Buick Raceabout, and two more Peerlesses, now that I've found they're a little rarer than I thought. You know what they say: "Faster Than Ford, Older Than Cadillac, Rarer Than Duesenberg!"

At the time I started this thread in 2007....I didn't actually have a Peerless in real life. I was hoping to buy a '27 Peerless Model 6-80 Sedan that I looked at in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. Someone else got it, so I bought another 6-80, which is a Boat Tail Coupe and a 1928, so I'll need to replace the '27 Packard* and '27 Pierce-Arrow* Sedans with a 1928 Packard Single Six Coupe* and a 1928 Pierce-Arrow Series 81 Coupe*. As long as we have this fantasy list we might as well have a matched set, eh?

So that leaves me with three more cars to buy. A 1926 Elcar Cabriolet [Lycoming Straight-8]* would be nice. Okay, a 1928 Peerless Model Eight-69 7-Pass. Sedan [V-8]*, and any Peerless Six-70 [rarer now than a Model "X" Duesenberg*].

18 to pick... one ford of each decade 1900s-1960s... likewise one packard... ditto one mopar ... and ditto one gm per decade... allready i'm over 18 and i haven't metioned amc, studes or hudsons or any foreign cars... how about a list of 180 cars...

I reduced the number of post WWII cars but still have one Ford and one GM on the list.

The first car, a Model A, Type 1 Peerless, would be a real "Mission Impossible" to find. Supposedly, about 15 little Tri-Cycles were built in the first year Peerless built cars (1900-1901), but none have survived. There aren't even any photographs that have survived. If you found one , it would look like an 1899 or 1900 De Dion Bouton tricycle...but the Peerless version would seat more than one person (reportedly). This is on the list so I'd have a car to drive on the London-to-Brighton Motoring Rallye. If you want to get real technical, this is a 1901 Model, but it would qualify for London-Brighton.

Cars No. 2, 4, and 7 were in the family collection for many decades. No. 2 apparently was intended for racing. Sold at auction 20 years ago when my grandfather (Glenn Brown of Hutchinson, KS) died. He was always of the opinion it was nearly identical to the cars on the Buick racing team circa 1909-1912 that dominated auto racing then. Maybe he thought that his Buick had some connection with Buick racer Glen Milton Breed who lived in the same town, briefly, and was on the Buick factory team 1905-1909.

Car No. 4 was last seen in the Towe Auto Museum, Deer Lodge, Montana. One of the Lincolns built by Henry Leland prior to Ford having any connection to Lincoln.

Car No. 5 would be a hard car to find, too. I hold out hope that there is a '24 Peerless Superb Six Roadster out there somewhere, but I doubt it. They were built and sold, but of all the Model 6-70's built, it appears only one has survived, a Phaeton.

Car No. 16. This isn't the same car that's in the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum.

Car No. 17's significance, besides being a well-built car in its own right, is that it probably saved the Packard Company from going out of business in the Great Depression.

:)I dont know, I dont think I could dream up 18 cars that I would really like to have. Then too, what would you do with 18?? You could not possably keep them all in show condition, but I guess if you could afford to have 18 you could afford to hire a crew to clean and maintaine them. If you drove one a day most would only get out twice a mo. Decisions decisions. To many toys and not enough play time.:o I think I might be able to list 18 I wish I still had, I would start with my first car. A 1942 ford 2dr. I let that one get away in a trade for a 41 Chev. I wouldnt mind haveing a 39 ford I learned to drive on, and the 55 Packard clipper I brought back from Fla. was a jewell. I think the 37 Dodge buessness coupe I bought for $20. and a portable record player would fit in my dream collection and I know the 61 Pointy with the full race eng. I bought in 66 could slide right in there. My 58 Ford convertable was a real POS, but it was nice to look at. Might make some yard art.:D Wow. only seven and Im tired just thinking of the work involved. I need to think on this a little more,this dream could turn in to a nightmare:eek:

Of course, if you had mega bucks like Bob Bahre, you'd have 2 large car barns, one with two floors, full of Packards from '31-38 (8, I think), Duesenbergs (3) and many others including a Brewster Buick and a Tucker. I don't remember how many cars there are, but got to be approaching 100. I recently had an opportunity to view the collection and talked with the caretaker. The collection is usually open to the public during Paris Old Home Days in July.
