  1. The application of cold and heat can make all the difference. I was taught this in 7th grade metal shop and use that information to this day. Last week I did a valve job. While installing valve guides, the heads were in the oven to 600 degrees and the silicone bronze valve guides were in the freezer. Take the head out of the oven and the guides out of the freezer and the guides can be pushed in with a finger. That lesson that was learned when every boy/teenager in school had to take metal, electric, wood, print, shops and drafting from the 7th to 9th grade.
  2. In 1990 when my 1965 Type 111 beetle became 25 I took out a Antique auto insurance policy on the car, Also the dept of motor vehicles issued a antique lic. plates. The "new" antique has been around for longer than some members here have been alive.
  3. Your FIRST ANTIQUE === Running driver or Project I assume you mean a vehicle 25 years or older. I have 6 vehicles that come under that category. All running of course because two of them I bought new and all the others but two, I bought when they were a couple of years old.
  4. I think you need to change the color of your engine. The Pontiac 1955-57 (Except Bonneville Fuel injection) is presented below;
  5. As with anything start with the basics. Mechanical condition of the engine FIRST. Compression test, leak down test.
  6. They USED to make them. It seems product planning and marketing people don't talk to the public anymore.
  7. OH, he is a Dude alright!!!! Even though he only carries one bullet !
  8. Try and find a nice "stock" Datsun/Nissan 510, 610*, 710*, 810*, 910*, LB110*, B-11*, B-12*, U11*, U12, 620*, 720, D-21, early 70-73 President* or Infiniti M-30*, G-20 and Q-45* especially the * cars and truck.
  9. Subject: FW: U.S. OIL SUPPLY.....INCREDIBLE U.S. OIL SUPPLY.....INCREDIBLE About 6 months ago, there was a news program on oil and one of The Forbes Bros. was the guest. The host said to Forbes, "I am going to ask you a direct question and I would like a direct answer; how much oil does the U.S. Have in the ground?" Forbes did not miss a beat, he said, "More than all the Middle East put Together." The U.S. Geological Service issued a report in April 2008 that only Scientists and oil men knew was coming, but man was it big. It was a revised report (hadn't been updated since 1995) on how much oil was in this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota, western South Dakota, and Extreme eastern Montana. Check THIS out: The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska's Prudhoe Bay and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates it at 503 billion barrels. Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable (5 Billion barrels), at $107 a barrel, we're looking at a resource base worth more than $5.3 trillion. "When I first briefed legislators on this, you could practically see their Jaws hit the floor. They had no idea." says Terry Johnson, the Montana Legislature's financial analyzer. "This sizable find is now the highest-producing onshore oil field found in the past 56 years," reports The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. It's a formation known as the Williston Basin but is more commonly referred to as the 'Bakken.' It stretches from Northern Montana, through North Dakota and into Canada. For years, U.S. Oil exploration has been considered a dead end. Even the 'Big Oil' companies gave up searching for major oil wells decades ago. However, a recent technological breakthrough has opened up the Bakken's Massive reserves, And, we now have access of up to 500 billion barrels. And because this is Light, sweet oil, those billions of barrels will cost Americans just $16 PER BARREL!!!!! That's enough crude to fully fuel the American economy for 2041 years Straight. And if THAT didn't throw you on the floor, then this next one should - Because it's from 2006 !!!!!! U.S. Oil Discovery - Largest Reserve in the World Stansberry Report Online - 4/20/2006. Hidden 1,000 feet beneath the surface of the Rocky Mountains lies the Largest untapped oil reserve in the world. It is more than 2 TRILLION barrels. On August 8, 2005 President Bush Mandated its extraction. In many recent years of high oil prices none has been extracted. With this mother lode of oil why are we still fighting over off-shore Drilling? They reported this stunning news: We have more oil inside our borders, than all the other proven reserves on Earth. Here are the official estimates: 8 times as much oil as Saudi Arabia 18 times as much oil as Iraq 21 times as much oil as Kuwait 22 times as much oil as Iran 500 times as much oil as Yemen And it's all right here in the Western United States !!!!!! HOW can this BE? HOW can we NOT BE extracting this? Because the Environmentalists and others have blocked all efforts to help America become Independent of foreign oil! Again, we are letting a small group of people Dictate our lives and our economy. WHY? James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says we've got more oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East, more than 2 TRILLION barrels Untapped. That's more than all the proven oil reserves of crude oil in the World today, reports The Denver Post. Don't think 'OPEC' will drop its price even with this find? Think again! It's all about the competitive marketplace, it has to. Think OPEC just might be funding the environmentalists? Got your attention yet? Now, while you're thinking about it, do this: Pass this along. If you don't take a little time to do this, then you should stifle yourself the next time you complain about gas prices, by doing NOTHING, you forfeit your right to complain. Now I just wonder what would happen in this country if every one of you sent this to everyone in your address book. By the way, this can be verified. Check it out at the link below !!!!!! https://www.usgs.gov/news/national-news-release/usgs-releases-oil-and-gas-assessment-bakken-and-three-forks-formations USGS Releases Oil and Gas Assessment for the Bakken and Three Forks Formations of Montana and North Dakota | U.S. Geological Survey The USGS has completed an oil and gas estimate for the Bakken and Three Forks Formations in the Williston Basin of Montana and North Dakota. The estimate includes 4.3 billion barrels of unconventional oil and 4.9 trillion cubic feet of unconventional natural gas in the two formations. www.usgs.gov
  10. It's not a slant pan and it's not even the Cad-Pont-Olds dual range (1952-54). It's basically like the original HydraMatic with the 3.82 first gear but the difference being in the valve body. I'm sure many of you old time drag racers have heard of the old B&M hydro 4. Well, this G.M. truck HydraMatic has a shift quadrant like the B&M unit which goes like this N - 4-3-2-1-R. Reverse is like the Car HydraMatic meaning it's reverse gear and when the engine is off and the gear selector is in reverse because of no trans oil pressure it engages the parking pawl by a spring. So 1st gear is first 2nd is 1&2, 3rd is 1-2-3 and 4th goes through all the gears like 1-2-3-4. Please look it up page 142; https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/docs/gm-heritage-archive/vehicle-information-kits/Chevrolet-Trucks
  11. As long as the majority of cars are front wheel drive, as long as gasoline price, tax, oil resources (we have plenty of oil) are not restricted or manipulated and companies are allowed free market supply and demand and access there will be a strong market for trucks.
  12. Give me the simplicity and reliability. NO chokes, No heat riser - crossover, and No ATC. I believe in starting a car the old Porsche way. Old air cooled Porsches had no chokes. Crank the engine without foot off the throttle until the engine sputters (that tells me fuel has entered the carburetor and by that time the engine is fuel primed and more importantly is oil primed) now pump the throttle three or four times and take your foot off the pedal and crank, ( the throttle blade or butterfly) is your choke and the engine will come to life and feather the throttle up to and over 1,000rpm. Don't drive at all until the engine will Idle down on it's own with your foot off the throttle. This method is perfect for the in a hurry drive off fast (wife) and hard driver because if there is no choke and the engine is cold -driving off aggressively will cause the engine to nose over and if not fast enough to recover the engine will stall. Driving without any type of choke (electric or manual) lets the car decide when it's ready not you. A car engine works like a track star. A track star always warms up first before a race. A engine should always warm up and expand to it's operating tolerances first before work is applied to it. Chokes are a crutch making a engine do what it doesn't want to do when it's cold. The only time you really need a choke system or fuel enrichment system on EFI cars is to be able to pass the visual on the smog test.
  13. That has nowt to do with me. You'd have to talk with Pete Gariepy, however regarding race cars. There is a criteria for race cars to fall into before they are accepted in a AACA show. I suggest you look up the criteria for race cars.
  14. It's not restored. Engine is highly modified. Incorrect wheels, and headlamp covers. Engine aside, the engine compartment is very original spot on.
  15. Nope, not what I said. What I have said is that the General section of the forum has rules and you signed up for the forum knowing those rules. I didn't make the rules. Here is the rules for the third time, [AACA’s forums do NOT promote other forms of the automobile hobby such as street rods, hot rods or restomods. As an organization we have respect for all forms of the hobby but these forums are to recognize and serve those that have the same beliefs as our organization. Discussion of modified vehicles will be removed including: street rods, hot rods or similar vehicles." If you post anything hotrod related it will be deleted. ]
  16. You can see that some of the people who visit the General section site are not restored, original fans even though when they signed on here, they supposedly signed off on that. The reason we have moderators is to see that the rules of the forum are enforced so that the bickering doesn't start and grow out of control.
  17. No, avoid does not have a negative connotation in this context or out of or in the context of the word itself. Out of this context it is neutral and can be used positively or negatively. Generally, avoid in the way you are describing it by way of a Chevrolet guy vs Ford guy is a good thing because the Chevrolet guy is simply avoiding the Ford forum and avoiding something negative being a good thing. Avoiding trouble is sometimes a good thing, just as confronting trouble at times may be imperative.
  18. Actually, it does matter. Rules matter and that "is" the point of it all and it doesn't matter if the topic is popular or not. Mob rule is popular and more than often unjust. The rule of law separates us from the animals.
  19. "AACA’s forums do NOT promote other forms of the automobile hobby such as street rods, hot rods or restomods. As an organization we have respect for all forms of the hobby but these forums are to recognize and serve those that have the same beliefs as our organization. Discussion of modified vehicles will be removed including: street rods, hot rods or similar vehicles." If you post anything hotrod related it will be deleted. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I didn't write the above. It's part of what you signed to become a member of the forum. As far as why this thread was moved I only speculated. I would suggest contacting Pete to find out why he moved it.
  20. My guess is that it was moved because of the GENERAL Forum rules. This type of thing has happened before. One incident I remember was in regard to a modified Buick Riviera. The Buick was moved to the Buick section where there are quite a few modifiers. Why this Cadillac is in the legislation section, and it is only my speculation that if it were moved to the Cadillac section, and with the Cadillac owners being more conservative in regard to the Cadillac mark it would be best to move it here to have a quiet death. Here below is the General section of the forum rules. Forum rules state: "AACA’s forums do NOT promote other forms of the automobile hobby such as street rods, hot rods or restomods. As an organization we have respect for all forms of the hobby but these forums are to recognize and serve those that have the same beliefs as our organization. Discussion of modified vehicles will be removed including: street rods, hot rods or similar vehicles." If you post anything hotrod related it will be deleted.
  21. I have one car that is built for Grand Touring and another in the works, therefore I have modified cars as well as original cars. It's not like I or some others dislike modified cars. And I don't like government intervention, it's already done enough damage. So, what is the rub here? The rub is that this 49 modified Cadillac is on the wrong site. Most of us know (because we signed off on it) what the purpose of this site is for. When someone posts such a car the bickering starts, needless bickering because the car doesn't belong here in the General section. It just stirs the pot.
  22. Thank you Peter, I believe these are also your words; Forum rules state: "AACA’s forums do NOT promote other forms of the automobile hobby such as street rods, hot rods or restomods. As an organization we have respect for all forms of the hobby but these forums are to recognize and serve those that have the same beliefs as our organization. Discussion of modified vehicles will be removed including: street rods, hot rods or similar vehicles." If you post anything hotrod related it will be deleted.
