  1. No, the water distribution pipes are in the cylinder head. Pontiac engines from 1933-1954 (Flathead six and eight) and V-8 from 1955-1959 have water distribution tubes. The flathead engines have the tube in the block and the OHV V-8's have one in each cylinder head. The one below I have shown is for the V-8; Those tubes direct the coolant right to the place in the head where on the opposite side of the water jacket is the exhaust valves are. This ensures the exhaust valve seats are cooled. The system is called reverse flow cooling. Cooled water from the water pump is first pumped to these tubes first before being recirculated to the block. They don't last forever and must be checked. In the time we had our 59 Pontiac (1959-1969) we replaced the tubes twice. Looking at this cutaway below, look at the water-jacket and how it's shape is pointed to the exhaust valve. The tube can also be seen in the water jacket and the holes in it are pointed towards the exhaust seat.
  2. The only Pontiacs with full carpeting were the convertible and the Catalina super deluxe. The Standard chieftain uses all rubber.
  3. and 49-51 Olds 88 and 76. Pontiac Chieftain deluxe used the rubber up front and the carpet in rear.
  4. Just curious, you said you rebuilt the cooling system. My question is; where did you get the water distribution tubes? and were they copper or stainless?
  5. Wonder what H/S Dow went to? I've got a couple of friends that went to school with a bunch of those child and grown-up actors and entertainers like Ryan O'Neal, Nancy Sinatra, Ricky Nelson etc.
  6. Gee Jim, I thought I was the only guy who watches Leave it to Beaver in the morning over Breakfast! Today Ward was driving a 57 FORD Fairlane 500 Hardtop.
  7. Hey Charles, have you tried California Pontiac Restorations?
  8. I'm glad you provided that link. I saw a shortened version of the part about the Corvair. I'm also glad Tony Dow finally came to the positive conclusion about that part of his life and has embraced the good things about the experience whereas other child/teenage actors let the negative factors drive them nuts. Thanks Jim
  9. Yes, the Cleavers had a Fairlane 2 dr. and also a 4 dr.- depends on the episode. Fred Rutherford had a 2 dr. Fairlane 500. Later Fred has a 58 Fairlane 500 4 dr. Ward driving Here we see Ward in a 57 4 dr.and the same car in the garage with the kids; Here is Fred bailing out of a 58 Fairlane 4 dr. HT. Wallys second car;53 chev.
  10. Well Lumpy had a decent 40 FORD until Wally and Eddie took Ward Cleavers tow chain and hooked the chain to a tree, When Lumpy drove away the axel and torque tube assy stayed in Freds driveway. That episode "Wallys practical joke" probably inspired this;
  11. OK so valve adjustment is part of the tune up, anything tight or loose?
  12. I thought it was a 1936 Ford,---- sorry that's what it was on Leave it to Beaver.

  14. Solo says, Illia, please get me out of this mess, but blow out the candle first Illia says, All right Mr. Solo! We'll use either the Borgward or the Trabant for our getaway car!
  15. So, with a typical six or V-8 with 5-quart capacity you contaminate 4 new quarts with 1 quart of used oil?
  16. Anyone noticing that lately like at BAT, people are not using the word restore and for some reason refurbishment is appearing more and more.
  17. It matters to some people who don't want you to own and enjoy a collector car, some don't even want you to own a car at all.
  18. My 1964 VW Type 113 deluxe Beetle gets 32MPG with 10% ethanol and 36MPG on non-ethanol fuel. My 1965 VW Type 111 1200"A" Beetle gets 38MPG with 10% ethanol and 42MPG on non-ethanol fuel. My 1976 Oldsmobile gets 24MGP with 10% ethanol fuel and 28MPG with non-ethanol fuel. I've never done a mileage check on the 62,63, and 69 Pontiac's, but my two daily drivers also have a 4MPG drop in economy if I use 10% ethanol fuel. Think of all the fuel in this country we are wasting using ethanol fuel! Oh wait, we're not supposed to think of such things. Nice to know someone is looking out for us😉.
  19. Gary, I had the very same experience. In 1959 my dad ordered a S/O Catalina hardtop sport coupe with a 420"A" 389 Tri power with a HD Super HydraMatic. My dad raced it in AS/A. In 1961 we installed a progressive linkage kit from Royal Pontiac along with a Bobcat kit and a set of 1960SD big valve heads. I got my drag license in 1965 at the age of 14 and raced it in FS/A. In 1967 I got my regular drivers license. One evening after a Bible study class I was pulling out of the parking lot going home and there were about 25 of my classmates playing football in the parking lot. As I was pulling out of the parking space I depressed the accelerator pedal lightly with the wheels cranked all the way to the left to pull out of the space when the accelerator went to the floor and the car took off with guys jumping out of the way. That Catalina had so much torque the brakes wouldn't hold it back. Standing on the brakes, front wheels skidding and rear tires burning rubber I finally was able to climb up and cut the ignition switch. My dad and I finally found the problem the next day when after we exhausted all possibilities we brake torqued the automatic and the engine's left bank looked like the engine was going to jump out of the engine compartment, and of course the car took off again with my dad at the wheel. A broken left motor mount ( no safety hook) (no factory bulletins) caused the engine to torque up and WOT the throttle linkage. Ironically about two weeks later the very same thing happened to a friends 59, 348 tri-power Impala.
