  1. That goes for Pontiac as well. Many Pontiac enthusiast consider the last Pontiacs built were in 1981, and some models before that. A Chevy engine in a Pontiac now makes a Pontiac a Chevrolet. Same with Oldsmobile as GM brass would find out by Oldsmobile owners in the mid 70's.
  2. Steve, there are certainly a lot of low riders in REUNITED car club you belong to. I certainly hope you're Roadmaster and Chevrolet are stock because this site is dedicated to stock. Post some pictures of your cars.
  3. That brings to mind another car/taxi that was all over Germany in 50's-60's.
  4. The Thing or type 181 was a true post war German military vehicle, and a German police vehicle.
  5. Seems odd, VW makes cars, vans, campers, pick-ups, SUV's, police cars, fire trucks, utility vehicles, ambulances, military vehicles all well before 1992. So does most other manufacturers like Ford, GM, Chrysler, Nissan, Toyota, Mercedes, etc.etc. I expect they are all treated the same???
  6. Yes, you are right. Imagine getting into a war with China when you have a company (many companies) whose interest are else-ware and compromised. It wouldn't be like WW1&2. Most of G.M. engineering is in China. Don't they know if there ever was a war (economic or military) the Chinese would take it away from them.
  7. Back when that 1988 Olds commercial came out, I felt like if I had enough money, I would take out a add commercial that would say " You're right this isn't your father's Oldsmobile " "THIS WAS YOUR FATHERS OLDSMOBILE" THIS WAS YOUR GREAT GRANDFATHERS OLDSMOBILE When stock cars were STOCK
  8. Cadillac from the late 80's 90's NO just a Chevrolet engine! GM forgot what they preached to us in it's glory days. THE ENGINE IS THE BRAND!
  9. I recall when Pontiac was stabbed in the back was selling more cars than Buick in this country. So, it sounds like the Chinese are more important than us in America to G.M. The demise of Pontiac and Oldsmobile and possibly later Buick and Mercury etc. is an indication of the demise of the United States middle class.
  10. Icons of Pontiac. the SD 389,421,455 And although all the divisions had Tri-Power except BUICK, and Tri-Power came to Pontiac from Oldsmobile along with Pete Estes who became Pontiac's chief engineer and later Pontiac Division General Manager and finally President of G.M. It seems to most people that they identify Tri-Power with Pontiac I give you Pontiac Tri-Power! 1957- ----1966 Two important Pontiac Icons, the "Split Grille" and "Wide-Track" Another Pontiac Icon that many people considered the first muscle car, if not it was the first to put it in a package and sell it as such. John DeLorean for creating a what if we???? Jim Wangers for marketing GTO in many creative ways, And Pete Estes the General Manager of Pontiac Division who put his neck, career on the line for disobeying corporate policy to sell such a vehicle to the public without corporate approval. Jim Wangers Iconic Tiger Theme which identified Tigers with all Pontiacs. Even Royal Tires with their Tiger Paw tires had a Pontiac nose to its advertising. >>It may be a U.S. Royal advertisement, but it's got a Pontiac split grille!
  11. If I were to show pictures of VW Beetles, I would have shown it this way. 19361937 Final shape 1938 with Dr. Porsche official unveiling of car and factory cornerstone Super beetle This modified car below doesn't cut it, Non factory sunroof with non-factory wind deflector, non-factory wheels, removed body side molding on a deluxe car, no anodized bright trim in window rubber, and I imagine a non stock engine
  12. The SD22 diesel is not related to the LD28 diesel in it's design architecture. SD22 is a pushrod engine and the LD28 is a OHC engine.
  13. The Datsun1500/1600/ 2000 is an easy car to work on (I wish my 2012 and 2019 NISSANS were as easy!) The only harder thing to get to is the trans. I prefer pulling the engine / trans together because the roadster has a perimeter frame with a X frame cross brace-like a 1955-57 thunderbird. The Mikuni carb set up was an optional "competition" package but not street legal. The carbs were just a part of the package with camshaft and other valve train parts. The only place I think it was street legal was in Australia if I remember correctly. Lots of room in the engine bay even for the larger U20 engine.
  14. These days you can turn off the ignition without going further on the tumbler to steering wheel lock.
  15. BTW, the 910/Maxima had a diesel version of the L28. L28 is a very robust engine (a seven main bearing six cylinder) made even more sturdy in diesel form which is why many Z race cars used its bottom end for racing. Called the LD28.
  16. The Datsun 810 was updated to the 910 as the years progressed the 910 turned into the NISSAN/DATSUN Maxima. It still used the L-28 and used a modified version of the bullet proof L371B three speed automatic. This modified version had a extra planetary gear set and it was called the L4N71B, a four speed automatic. 910 MAXIMA This is the time period when NISSAN-U.S.A. was trying to loose the European numbering system for it's cars. It was also a time when the DATSUN name was also being phased out to just NISSAN. For those who think this was confusing just remember when you looked at the data plate on any DATSUN going back to 1931, the car tag always said NISSAN LTD. FYI this also applies to the INFINITI brand. THINK-Remember a Chevrolet or any other G.M. car including Cadillac is a G.M. car.
  17. From 1971-1974 all manufacturers had a tough time with emissions and drivability. For 1973 Z, Nissan changed out the SU carburetors for a similar side draft pair of Hitachi F carbs to help bring down CO-HC emissions. In 1974 the emission standards and safety became even more stringent and in order to overcome the added weight and a choked horsepower 2.4 the engine was enlarged to 2.6. The 260 was plagued with terrible drivability issues especially in hot climates with engine surging issues due to vapor lock to hot start, and hot soak issues. I remember many days at Death Valley doing hot weather testing trying to help solve these issues. Several kits were devised to help correct the problem. For 1975 the emission standards became even tighter, and the day of the carburetor and conventional exhaust system was over so the 1975 Z had a enlarged engine again (now a 2.8L) with Bosch Fuel injection and a Catalytic Converter. The converter was a godsend because it allowed the engine to be tuned for drivability again and let the Catalytic Converter take care of the excess tailpipe emissions. Original SU type carbs; Hitachi F SU carbs for emissions;
  18. I realize some cars have the Cats welded in place, but the two way Cat on this Cadillac and other cars are a bolt in and so easy to do.
  19. I mentioned that earlier, but you don't need to do that if you have CO-HC analyzer. You just disconnect the Cat from the headpipe / exhaust pipe and test from there. I should buy one if I ever see one that come up providing I can get all the filters and sample gas to calibrate.
  20. Bad injector. are you dropping cylinders? A non functioning injector won't give you a high CO number. a open injector will flood you out. Vacuum leak= High HC lean misfire.
  21. Here is what happens when the AI pump is diverted or disconnected or removed on a two way catalytic converter car. CO and HC become richer for two reasons. 1. injecting air into the exhaust manifold helps combustion after the fact (what happens in the combustion chamber) because we all know combustion in the combustion chamber does not combust all the mixture. 2. the air pump supplies enough O2 to help the catalytic converter light off ( like when you blow on coal in the fire place you make them glow red hot). I must say something about AIR or Air Injection Reactor. There are two types. The first type pointed an air nozzle from an air manifold directly into the combustion chamber pointed at the exhaust valve. We first saw this in 1966 and this type decreased the life expectancy of exhaust valves. The second type ( like my 76 Olds) just injects air in the exhaust manifold. AIR is crucial to the life of the catalytic converter.
