  1. Have you seen this online rebuild How To? It's got a few warnings in it, like spring orientation. Not sure if they apply but you might look at it. Important change to article here: Put the second spring wire into place. Orient it so it's a mirror-image of the first one, with the raised part in the same dog as the first. http://www.vclassics.com/archive/tranreb.htm http://www.vclassics.com/archive/tranhow.htm http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/volvo-m40-transmission-rebuild.641530/ Sounds like you still have some sort of synchro problem not clutch. Sounds like the clutch must be releasing. Or maybe shift rod. Do the detent balls feel like they are working properly when you shift it stationary?
  2. Looks like a good restoration candidate
  3. Here's another commercial, with Lucy & Desi, for the 1958 Ford Custom 300. "Makes turning easier than swinging on a newly oiled gate." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDIrFhFDty8
  4. So I suppose that WOULD be a correct 401 Nailhead V8, just painted blue. Here is what one in a "restored" 1963 Riviera looks like. Looks the same to me- Here is the link to photos of the restored '63. Maybe it is a $20k vehicle? Just for a point of reference. http://www.autorestorationice.com/2014/09/1963-buick-riviera-fully-restored.html
  5. Is this not true, stock nailhead? Drops the value if not the original, as previously stated. Need to be concerned with this also. How's the repaint look in person? Does not seem too good in the pics. Very close inspection for rust, underside, rockers, lower door edges, rear window and windshield lower channel area. And need to look over whatever area it was that had damage repaired, evidence of bondo, paint cracking, not straight. $7500 sounds high to me. You could look at it, leave it sit unsold, wait for the price to soften and then go lower still. If you're impressed with the condition when seeing it in person and like it, make an offer.
  6. Is this what a "Tail Dragger" is? http://www.sonomacountygazette.com/cms/pages/sonoma-county-news-article-1521.html http://pinkeesrodshop.com/
  7. >>A large collection of over 60 American and European automobiles located on Historic Route 66. Visit the museum and enjoy a walk though history.<< Only 60 cars but if it's just an individual collector that's quite a bit. From the pic it looks to be mostly European. Two Austin Healy 3000's, those are handsome cars. MG's, Mercedes, Jag, Sunbeam Tiger. Here's a Healy video - http://comediansincarsgettingcoffee.com/ricky-gervais-mad-man-in-a-death-machine/ Jerry Seinfeld, "Do you think we look gay?" Ricky Gervais, "That's the least of my worries."
  8. Well receiving stolen property is a criminal offense. If I purchase a $1,000 bicycle from a homeless dude for $60 I could be sent to jail, especially if I advertise it online for sale for $500. I think what was meant is that if the stolen item comes with good quality forged documentation, as a realistic forged title, and a fair price is paid, the purchaser was acting in good faith, and not subject to prosecution. But no valid ownership exists.
  9. There should be more information online to elucidate the court's title ruling, but for now Bloomberg is a bit better news source than jalopnik so maybe this helps: In an initial ruling, the Hamburg regional court said yesterday there was no evidence that U.S. troops quartered at Prym’s Stolberg estate, Waldfriede, in 1945 were entitled to take the car, a Mercedes-Benz 500K “Spezial Roadster.” The caretaker who looked after Prym’s car, Franz Wagemann, was away for a few days when it vanished. His daughter, who is now 84 and lives in the U.S., recalled her father’s reaction in a statement presented to the court. He was, she wrote, “furious” and “very dismayed.” http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2012-05-30/mercedes-car-stolen-in-war-belongs-to-heirs-court-says RM Auctions did not provide complete provenance : Mr. Haren had purchased the car only last year, during the RM Auctions in Monterey, California. At the time of the auction, RM had listed a large swath of the car's history as being unknown. The car was actually one of five Mercedes-Benz 500/540K models for sale that weekend, an almost unreal number considering the models' extreme rarity and value. http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/classic-cars/news/a21888/stolen-mercedes-benz-500-to-be-returned-to-heir-35570/

  12. I am thinking in this case the frame stamping will not match the attached plate, because it's a blue car but the plate says black.
  13. So you think the vin plate has been swapped out? If so you can check it against the frame vin stamping. From another's post: Is the VIN also on the frame somewhere? 1957Birdman : I assume you are aware the serial number (no VIN numbers in 1955) is on the patent plate on the firewall. The serial number that matches the number on the patent plate is stamped on the frame in three places, only one of which is easily available to view. The easily viewed one is on top of the frame on the passenger side underneath the hood. It is about opposite the middle of the engine. It is not normally stamped that deeply into the metal and you may have to use some paint remover to see it. Do you have reason to belive the patent plate is not original to the car? Good luck,
  14. http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2016/07/30/just-cool-cars-massive-vw-bug-size-pickup-truck/87770700/ REDONDO BEACH, Calif. -- We see a lot of extraordinary vehicles through our Just Cool Cars series, but we've never seen anything like this. The license plate says it all: HUGE BUG. The formula sounds fairly simple: Take a 1959Volkswagen Beetle and find a way to make it 40% larger. Basically, it's a custom-built Bug riding atop the chassis of a 2010 Dodge Ram full-size pickup truck with a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine in front. It's unabashedly outrageous, and that's one of the reasons to admire it so much. The credit -- or blame -- goes to Richard Tupper of Gardena, Calif., who took on the project that required creating 3,514 unique parts in the metal fabrication shop that he owns. It was such an incredible undertaking that even the screws created from scratch because there were none that existed in their size, Tupper says. Tupper downplays the effort. "In hindsight," he told us at a car show here recently, "it wasn't that hard." Yet he adds, "I had to make templates for everything." This bug is a total beast. It weighs 6,200 pounds. The hood alone is about 200 pounds. The inside of the car is as perfect in detail as the outside. One fun feature: The dashboard instruments, by design, don't work. Instead, a digital dashboard drops down when Tupper starts the engine. After all the work, you'd think Tupper would be a VW fanatic. He's not. "I don't know a lot about VW's," he says. "I know about the big ones." Driving around town, Tupper says other drivers are startled when they see the Huge Bug. At an intersection, "If you don't move, nobody moves." Other drivers, he says, are simply staring in disbelief.
  15. When I see that clutch disc I think, you've got to be kidding. It really does look like wine bottle corks glued to a metal disc.
  16. op, is your parking brake cable hooked up? it's a driveshaft parking brake. maybe the parking brake cable broke and someone just attached it to the transmission so it would not hang down.
  17. R-10-G ? Is it the same as this one? http://forums.aaca.org/topic/220356-for-sale-chrysler-dodge-desoto-plymouth-mopar-overdrive-transmission/
  18. Thanks for adding some clarity with regard to how this situation arose in the first place.
  19. Raised cams integral with the regular cams, and the camshaft (slides) endwise... without moving the timing gear. So you're correct in understanding how it works. Explained at the bottom of page 1174 here - http://books.google.com/books?id=8swqAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA1174&lpg=PA1174&dq=fiat+model+55&source=bl&ots=T3VrcyjLpE&sig=JPUZFxCpHS2GRM2o8C8_CAGMfdQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwihyoSg9MTNAhWIKGMKHfsHCKwQ6AEIKTAA#v=onepage&q=fiat model 55&f=false

A copper tube comes out the side of the sump near the bottom, and travels vertically up to the oil pump. Then exiting the pump is a horizontal copper tube that then goes in and feeds the horizontal end-to-end oil pipe. That's quite an engine/motor. (This article consistently refers to it as the 4 cylinder Fiat motor.)
  21. Here is another good ebook with info on the 4 cylinder, Motor World. The FIAT article is on page 27 and 28. Not sure if the link takes you to the correct page or if you have to search for the page. http://books.google.com/books?id=r-I_AQAAMAAJ&pg=RA10-PA27&lpg=RA10-PA27&dq=fiat+model+55&source=bl&ots=jJdIv-32Al&sig=eiA7WzOnQ9hIIWjOE8FKINKBgDE&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwihyoSg9MTNAhWIKGMKHfsHCKwQ6AEINTAE#v=onepage&q=fiat model 55&f=false It describes the hollow crankshaft and the oil pump.
  22. http://books.google.com/books?id=8swqAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA1174&lpg=PA1174&dq=fiat+model+55&source=bl&ots=T3VrcyjLpE&sig=JPUZFxCpHS2GRM2o8C8_CAGMfdQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwihyoSg9MTNAhWIKGMKHfsHCKwQ6AEIKTAA#v=onepage&q=fiat model 55&f=false Here's some info starting on page 1174 of this automotive "ebook" It says Lubrication is force-feed and non-splash. It also describes the gear oil pump mounted to the camshaft, on the rear end. And it DOES give the capacity. It says crankcase has a capacity of 4 to 5 gallons. NOT 4 to 5 quarts! This info is on page 1175.
  23. This 6 cylinder was rebuilt by Boulevard Motorcar Company in Westlake Village, California. so I think they should know. - http://blvdmc.com/ the current owner says the engine was recently rebuilt by Boulevard Motorcar Company in Westlake Village, California Coincidentally this spent some time in my hometown of Santa Rosa, CA - http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/22792/lot/102/ Mr. Colin "Ernie" Shaw of Santa Rosa, California purchased it around 1952 from a dentist in Los Angeles. 1916 would be the final year for the Model 56, with the choice of body styles reduced to five. In 1917, FIAT reduced its production in Poughkeepsie to only four-cylinder cars, and the American factory closed in 1918. It looks like the Six had a similar system.
  24. $12/hr to do carpentry is not worth it, below the cost of living. That is the sort of reason the labor participation rate keeps dropping. Labor Force Participation Rate, (Civilian labor force participation rate) http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS11300000 Pennsylvania ................ Percent employed = 53.4 http://www.bls.gov/lau/ststdsadata.txt
  25. My experience is that a 2-door with a rear seat, room for 4 adults is called a sedan. A coupe would only be 2-doors, with either no rear seat or a small rear seat only good for groceries or kids.
