  1. I've now had access to searching for customers specific cars both at Ford and now at Volvo. I can attest that many cars are indeed rare even when brand new. When I got my base model Fiesta with manual transmission I had to bring it from another dealer 3 hours away... and if they didn't want to trade, I would have had to go even further for the next one. I wanted a white hatch with no options. If memory serves me right, there were maybe 6 in 500 miles, but only one of those was white (and the only other options from Ford were black or silver). Over in the UK a similar options vehicle would be pretty common as Fiesta was the best selling model there.
  2. In this case, it sound like it's not only available but also in his garage. Many states are starting to require title even for a scrap yard. If I were in this situtation I'd probably search for abandoned vehicle laws. My other concern would be on branding. There are different ways to get a title, but if you end up with a branded title, it may not be the best way to go. It matters less with old cars than late model, but it will forever impact the value of the vehicle. I do agree that just because one ended up in your garage doesn't mean it has to be your end all be all, but a 11 year old car with just about 40 more years of dirt on it would likely be a better place to start than many of us did. If you like the car, it's a pretty easy one to get mechanical bits for and may be nice enough to not be embarrassed driving around with little cosmetic effort. There certainly is a way to get it and get it legal... the next thing you'll want to figure out is why someone left the car there to begin with (as in, what broke).
  3. Free means you saved it from the scrap yard too! Good stuff.
  4. I noticed Hershey moved their main page to Hershey.AACA.org and didn't know if there is an effort being made to standardize the domain of all regional sites. Is the club hosting such domains? I'm not a technical master when it comes to this stuff but try to keep my own regions site up to date and relevant and didn't know if anyone here knew.
  5. Glass and steel are about the same hardness so it shouldn't do any harm
  6. My parents bought a brand new 1991 Toyota Corolla when I was a kid... We kept that car for over 10 years, and if there was condensation on the inside of that car you could always see the outline of the window sticker. I'm not saying we ever did anything special to try and get rid of it, but I remember thinking it was amazing that it was always there!
  7. from 2-22 "Owners not able to find a correct replacement tire should send a letter to the VP Judging indicating the specific size of the correct tire and that at least two tire manufacturers have been contacted and the correct tire is not available. Tires one size larger or smaller are acceptable. A letter from the VP Judging is the ONLY AACA ACCEPTED documentation regarding a vehicles' substitute tires. Any letter issued by the VP Judging should be shown to the Team Captain at the time of vehicle judging."
  8. SO follow up... if we posted here and still always forgot to send in the request for a pass by the time we got home every night... where is a good place to park that early?
  9. Man I need to move out west.. I wanna find old frames sitting around.
  10. Is that a Doble boiler? Would make sense for the period. I'd bet if so the motor is worth more than the asking price. Admittedly I know next to nothing about factory steam power.
  11. Congrats! So less time on the forum and more time in the cars right? Happy trails!
  12. Pretty easy to rig up a bottle to the carb and bypass the fuel tank. If it runs on the bottle then the tank is the issue. Pretty common. If that's the case... clean it out good with vinegar or something and then reseal with the POR 15 tank sealer. I did that on my IH 240 a few years ago and it hasn't been a problem since. Same with my brothers Triumph Spitfire. If not tank, than sediment in the carb would be my next bet.
  13. I like them. There are a ton out there with very low miles though, so more of a special interest than just about any other domestic from the period... not a huge money maker (for Ford or their later owners). They still come up in the general used car market and NADA is probably a realistic value setter. They weren't made to be collectible, but many people saved em or used them very lightly. Actually might be a good car to see if you can find a local lot that would want to sell it on consignment. They'll have better access to retail pricing to earn their cut and will be able to get folks financed easier than on private party. Plus you don't have to hassle with any of the marketing.
  14. Good point Annie! I just picked up a pretty original and clean 1986 F150... not a show winner but 120k 2wd and very minimal rust... but clean and unmolested (well I have to change the rims back, but the previous owner gave me the factory rims with it). HPOF is a good possibility for next year. Yes it's really just a used truck.... but it was in my budget and too nice to see it's life ended as a farm truck...
  15. If you can find a good running P1800 for $2k you send me that link right now!!! Lots of 240s out there cheap.
  16. 100% go for it. Plenty of people in this club (but probably too old for the forum) consider a 71 just a used car anyway! I've heard and agree with the idea of one new car or two old cars... that way you can account for waiting for parts that need ordered. My 2015 Fiesta had a repair and the one seal wasn't available for over a month... so having a backup plan is always good (in that case.. Ford covered my rental). Lots of good beaters are available for cheap as a second, and they can be interesting too. Im biased... but a volvo 240 would make a great 2nd old daily driver to compliment the Riv....
  17. Haha, the seller went and told his wife about the screw ball offer he got, thinking he would get sympathy... she lit a fuse when she heard he declined it.
  18. Bernie's story is probably about spot on. The pictures they do show of the actual car are the sorta pictures someone who doesn't know much about cars would think someone who wants to buy a car would want to see. No chassis or motor shots, and several that serve no purpose. I don't gamble, but I'd feel pretty good with a bet on this being an estate sale with a bunch of folks who don't know car values. You can always go down, it's hard to go up. It only takes one party of the estate to have inflated values in their mind to ruin that next Thanksgiving if the rest of the family "gave away" the car for $15k. If there is no real rush for cash, no harm in wanting to feel out the market and keep the family fighting down as seems not uncommon. Maybe their attorney (who knows nothing about cars) gave em a price to ask. The only sketchy part is the other picture. I think it was just an honest attempt to be dishonest about the condition and get the dreamers minds cranking.
  19. No disagreements with you Steve. I brought it up here for the conversation and to air out the idea. I was hoping to have a few folks make my idea better, or point out things I was overlooking so that if presented, it would make sense and be an improvement not just for us judges but also those who volunteer for the less glamorous admin side of things. I know where an email with no value ends up!
  20. I was thinking that too, but that's a big technological jump for AACA =-P
  21. Just a complaint for the sake of having the conversation... Might the folks who run Hershey consider a better solution to parking passes rather than sending SASE? It know it's not a big deal, but it is one of those extra PIA things that I can't fathom a reason for. Every other meet I've judged at mails the passes when you register automatically. If it's about the postage, why not just give an option to pay for the postage as well when you register as an add on? Because it's one of those things every judge needs, requiring an added step seems like it also is an added step for whoever has to constantly check their mail box and send the passes out.
  22. If its cl they ought to be local. I mean who scrolls the nation looking for prople who want to buy door panels? Also the text wording seems vague with "part". Ask for pics and then a specific pic not attainable by just zooming in. Edit... sorry I was tired this morning and for some reason read "craigslist" rather than "classified"... definitely a scam.
  23. Based on your handle probably in a box marked "1937 parts" ?
  24. For sure... but just for judging Saturday morning. I had to get off work just for that much. It's my daughters birthday too so I sorta have to get home quick for her as well (-=
  25. Google shows several 1937 dodge and plymouth headlight mounts with that part number and they look the same.
