1961 Mercury Meteor 800 restore
Laughing Coyote replied to Laughing Coyote's topic in Our Cars & Restoration Projects
Well it's been a while for an update so here is what's going on at the moment. I got tired of waiting for the generator after a month. The company kept pushing the delivery date out farther and farther. I canceled the order and ordered the new fields, armature, bearings, and brushes. Should be here next week. Going to purchase a new regulator as well so I can cross it off the list. I also received the steering cylinder hoses. I still have to put them on. Other than that nothing to exciting. -
I don't know if it's art. But I like it.

The mount on the front fender lines up with the others on the side of the bed. Maybe it was used to haul pipe, steel, or lumber along the side of the truck. Nice looking old truck. -

Oh. I guess it does make it a problem. I must have jumped the gun on the reply to the post. -

I bought an old tow motor forklift years ago for $1500. I knew a guy that needed one for his shop. He had the Bridgeport in a corner that he wasn't using. I wanted a mill so we traded. I ended up tearing down the entire head assembly and replaced all the bad and worn parts. The upper part works great. Once I get the other pats re built it will work like new again. It's still usable, I just can't use the full range of the table. -

I bought a complete system with OEM mufflers from Waldon and it fit perfectly. I was looking at the ones on the Bay, but not knowing the quality I decided to go with Waldon. Just my 2 pennies. -
Roger's handcrafted 1:12 scale models
Laughing Coyote replied to Roger Zimmermann's topic in Our Cars & Restoration Projects
Roger. I use a vinyl with an adhesive backing (sticker type material) that can be printed on with an ink jet printer. If you have a way to import the real decal image into a program that you can scale it down you could print it on the printable vinyl. Not sure whats available in Switzerland. I do it all the time for the plaques I make. Just a thought. -

I would love to get a better Bridgeport mill. I have a 1962 series 1, but it has sway back pretty bad. The table and saddle gets really tight at the ends of the lead screws. There is a company in Phoenix that can rebuild the ways, re-scrape, and redo the table for around $6 -$7K. If I could find a nice one in good shape back east it may be cheaper even with freight than doing the rebuild. There's not a whole lot of machinery around here. Makes for slimmer pickens. The only good thing is there isn't all the humidity so they dont rust up as bad. Anyone have a good mill for sale? -

There's been a few for sale around here. I would love to restore an old lathe. Just don't have the floor space for it. https://tucson.craigslist.org/tld/d/metal-lathe-16-48/6241570260.html https://tucson.craigslist.org/tls/d/vintage-heavy-duty-vernon/6167582794.html https://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/tls/d/pratt-whitney-metal-lathe/6231140848.html https://flagstaff.craigslist.org/tls/d/19-leblond-metal-lathe/6233569545.html https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/tls/d/rockford-lathe-must-go-now/6212038803.html -

My buddy takes his 64 red Galaxie 500 convertible up to La Encantada every now and then. What side of town are you at Eric? -

Nice work. -
Here you go Roger. This would look really nice parked next to your green caddy. https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/cto/d/1957-lincoln-continental-mark/6235528219.html

Here is one already to go. Probably cheaper than the restore costs for that one. https://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/cto/d/57-chrysler-300c/6171848169.html

1961 Mercury Meteor 800 restore
Laughing Coyote replied to Laughing Coyote's topic in Our Cars & Restoration Projects
Thanks Guys. Luv2Wrench. The mill is a Taig CNC mini mill. It works great to make small parts with complex curves and cuts. The design program is Vectric and it's very user friendly to use. They offer various types of design software. There is even a 3D program so you could make 3D parts. Once the part is designed you select the cut paths and it converts it into G code. You use Mach 3 software as the cutting software for the mill. I've made several detailed parts with it. http://www.taigtools.com/mmill.html http://www.vectric.com/ -
Nice. That would be one beautiful car once restored.

Still waiting for the generator. If it doesn't ship out soon I will just get my money back and buy the fields and armature and rebuild it. Would cost more, but I will have it. I'm getting antsy. In January I met with my eye doctor for my annual eye check up and we got to discussing cars and he is in the process of rebuilding a DKM Macho Trans Am. He wanted to know if I could replicate the emblem that goes into the center of the steering wheel since they are not available. After some designing on the computer and getting all the cut paths set for the mini mill I was ready to get one made. After about 4 1/2 hours of machining with a .020mm engraving tip end mill it was done. Good thing it's a cnc mill. Just let it run. I milled into solid brass and it's only 1 1/2" in diameter. Now all I have to do is back fill it with the colors and add clear coat and it's finished. I attached a link about the history of DKM. http://machoz28prototype.wixsite.com/dkm-cars -

Nice car. I actually was eyeballing it on CL too. Glad it's going to be going back on the road and not just sitting to rot away like so many others. -
Nice job on the the curved piece for the round tube of the frame. It's coming along. Can't wait to see it in paint. I can relate to the heat and humidity. We had are hot as heck June, now we are in the hot and humid monsoon season. We've been getting rain everyday. It feels like Florida. You just sweat all day long and don't feel like doing anything.

I thought I would give an update on the Merc project. I was having issues with the generator so I went a head and ordered a new one. Since just about everything else is new I decided I might as well. I have been buried with work so I haven't much time and the weather has been hot and sticky. Just don't feel like doing to much after working all day in it. Once I get the generator I will get back on it. By that time I should have a little break in my work load (I hope). -
While trolling the local CL I keep seeing this old car for sale. Just wanted to know if it's worth what he is asking. Thanks https://tucson.craigslist.org/cto/d/studebaker-rockne-suicide/6220748291.html

Ok. I got a chance to work on the generator issue. I have everything hooked up again. I have 12 volts at the battery post at the regulator. I don't have any voltage at the armature tab on the regulator (key off). No voltage at the field tab on the regulator. I did measure 12 volts at the field wire coming from the generator. Soooooo, is the generator fields shorted or is the regulator bad? That's the question.
-
Hey Frank. Glad to see your back. You are correct. The auto parts store CANNOT check the regulator. I verified the wiring to the ignition switch. I turn the key to acc or to run without turning the starter over and I get the oil light and gen light on the dash. All the other circuits that run off the key work fine also. I will do the checks on the regulator and see what I come up with. Thanks
