  1. Ed: At higher altitudes than you are accustomed to drink much more water than usual. The oxygen we need is extracted from the water rather than the thinner, high-altitude air. I have to make this adjustment annually going from 1,330 feet above sea level to 9,500 feet above sea level when visiting family in Colorado. Driving a Speed Six W.O. Bentley is a tough job, but someone has to do it...enjoy! Steve
  2. From Packard, A History Of The Motor Car And The Company, edited by Beverly Rae Kimes, page 298, detailing changes to the Seventh Series (1930): "Other changes included a half-melon shaped headlamp design and the omission of cowl ban and sidelights on brackets. The new parking lamps were fender-mounted, though they were an accessory on the Standard Eight where the parking lights were incorporated into the headlamps." Further, regarding the Eighth Series (1931), page 307: "And, of course, the new Packard line- designated 826-833-840-845- which the company began building in August. The hubcaps were larger, steering wheels had three spokes rather than four, fenders were a bit deeper, running boards thicker, the bumper clamps plain, no paneled." I'd opine from the details it was a 1931 Standard Eight 833 roadster.
  3. It's either a 1930 Standard Eight Model 733, Body Style 402 or 1931 Standard Eight Model 833, Body Style 462 roadster 2/4 passenger

A.J.: I'd be interested in reading and watching your comparison of the Mercedes-Benz 500 K and Horch 853. Steve
  5. Arta: Welcome! You have a rare, unique and wonderful high-quality automobile in your Simplex Crane Model 5. You should read the posting on this topic specifically for Simplex Crane automobile. Please also share with us photos and details of your car. Steve
  6. When I first saw a 1960 Meteor Montcalm during our 1962 family trip to the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, I was amazed that Ford would allow what looked like a raked version of the Lincoln Continental "boxed-star" as a highlight feature of the side trim.
  7. I recall we identified this as a Republic fire chief's car:
  8. Steve: The 1940-'41 Continentals are the purest versions of E.T. Gregoire's and Edsel Ford's visions of a 'continental' design. The long-hood/short-deck proportions, intimate passenger compartment, clean, minimal chrome trim create the sterling design they are. The 1942 and 1946-'48 restyle was done to satisfy the current horizontal design trend, however contrary it was to the original concept. While still attractive in the context of the era, they lack the purity of the original. The disappointing performance reputation of the Series H V-12 will always hold these Continentals down. Steve
  9. BTW: those wheel covers with the nine gold fins were optional. They are the standard 1958 Lincoln Capri and Premiere wheel covers with the gold fins added. The Continental Mark III's had stamped stainless steel wheel covers which looked similar to the heavy cast units with the bolted-on separate veins standard on the Continental Mark II's
  10. Well, there was the 1936 Nash LaFayette...a face only a mother could love.
  11. Hudsy: The 1928-'30 Dodge models during the integration into Chrysler Corporation are a confusing lot. There was a Standard Six, Victory Six and Senior Six and others. Some were carryover, others new sharing assemblies with other Mopars. The Dodge section of The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1805-1942, edited by Kimes and Clark has the best description of the various models and spec's to sort it out. Steve
  12. William M. (Bill) Schmidt was head of the Lincoln design studio from 1947 to 1954. He and his team were fully responsible for the 1952-'57 Lincolns. Schmidt moved to Studebaker-Packard in mid-1955 to lead the development of the still-born Detroit 1957 Packards, Clippers and Studebaker. With the 1956 S-P financial debacle, he took a lead position with Chrysler design while Virgil Exner was recovering from a massive heart attack. After the unhappy Chrysler experience, Schmidt continued with his own industrial design consultancy.
  13. It's a 1927 Studebaker Commander Big Six Model EW by the body style with integrated visor, cowl and headlight size and placement. Built on the 120" wb chassis, these have the Big Six 354 ci. engine and four-wheel brakes. For a capable tour car of the 1920's with considerable torque on tap, it would be hard to beat one of these.
  14. Surprising how much can be raised from a faded image.
  15. The "Lincoln" hood letters and emblem in the grille opening are 1953 details. This may be a 1953 model year car that was sold in a state that registered cars as the calendar year during which they were sold as opposed to the manufacturer designation. If it's a 1953, the serial numbers would begin with 53WA5,001H. The 317 ci engine had the compression ratio increased to 8.00:1 from 7.50:1 and horsepower to 205 @ 4200rpm from 160 @ 3900rpm.
