  7. Here is as good as I can improve the image. I would have guessed those headlights were salvaged off a scrapped American-type 4-4-0 wood-burning steam railroad locomotive.
  8. I first became aware of the Canadian-specific variations of American cars during our family trips in 1962, 1963 and 1966 to the Canadian National Exposition at Toronto. They were rarely seen stateside. About twenty years ago, I attended the Barrie flea market 50 miles north of Toronto, there was maybe one Canadian-specific car there, a 1960's Pontiac Parisienne. From that unscientific sample, I surmise the survival rate must be very low due to the lower numbers sold when new and the rigors and ravages of the climate.
  9. The automobile assembly plants were very specifically designed for volume mass production but are ill-fitted to any other re-purposing just by their sheer volume of space and construction methods. Reinforced poured concrete is notorious difficult to modify for other uses. Sure, loft apartments, but location also is a major factor and rarely are they in or near livable neighborhoods...especially not East Grand Boulevard now. Save and preserve the remaining cars and parts, document all aspects of Packard's history, keep the small remnants of the factory but let the rest fade into history.

  11. I second the idea the purported $250M Edsel losses were a corporate ruse. All major platforms and components were shared with Ford and Mercury models plus Edsels were assembled in the same plants as those other lines. Amortization and overhead was carried by Ford and Mercury production, the generation of engines continued into the late 1960's. Only things unique to Edsels were front clips, rear quarter panels, decklids, dash stampings plus trim. Although the initial promotion and sales organization consumed some, it was quickly folded into the Lincoln-Mercury Division. For comparison, "Tex" Colbert engineered a $250M major reorganization, modernization, manufacturing update and completely new 1955 Mopar lines across the board for the same amount. Now, had Ford admitted the millions lost on the Continental Mark II plus the unibody Lincolns and Continentals into the 1960's until sales volume surpassed 50K units, that would have been plausible. Even in this case, increasing Ford Thunderbird volumes carried the Wixom overhead, allowing the Lincoln 'vanity project' to continue. Ford was making plenty of money on other lines and models, could afford to support annual losses from Lincoln. After all, no Ford executive wanted to show up at the DAC or country club in only a Mercury Park Lane...or maybe even a Thunderbird wasn't enough for some... Steve
  12. Bloo: We had four AMC dealers within twenty miles here in those years but only rarely did an Ambassador show up. The sold hundreds of Rambler Americans, Supers, Classics, the area was lousy with them. By comparison for 1961 production: Lincoln Continental: 25,160; Ambassador: 18,842; Imperial: 12,258; Studebaker Hawk: 3,929. AMC kept the Ambassador in the product line to give former Nash and Hudson owners an AMC model they still could consider 'full-sized' which it was nominally in overall length if not width. Never mind that it was essentially a Rambler Classic with nine additional inches added to the front-axle-to-dash length paired with fancier trim and interior plus the 327 V8 engine. It was a smart strategy; it kept a percentage of buyers who otherwise would have turned to other makes for a full-sized car. Steve
  13. Looks like a good example of a seldom-seen, low survival rate car. This advertisement should sell it.

  20. John: Very astute observations on your part regarding how the current show-car and advertised representation is badly distorted relative to the initial popularity of various body styles. Unhappily, it also makes attending many shows and cruise nights a major yawn...bereft of variety. Steve
  21. "The glamorous Series 90 was Buick’s eight-cylinder flagship..." The "...glamorous Series 90"? Stately, imposing...sure, but glamorous? "...to lure buyers from the competition and even from its corporate sibling, Cadillac." No, Packard Standard Eight buyers were the primary target market for the Buick Series 90 which was developed when the former still dominated the 'entry-level' prestige segment in the late 1920's. LaSalle, which was develop and priced to directly challenge the Packard Standard Eight, had not produced the intended objective to wrestle the sales crown for that segment from Packard. Cadillac itself, was not going to be sullied by such a down market fight. Buick, on the other hand, had been developing the 1927-'28 Master Six 128, 1929 Series 129 and 1930 Series 60 as contenders for value buyers in that price segment who would see the merits of similar specifications but for more moderate prices just below LaSalle and Packard Standard Eight. The seemingly rising prosperity of the latter 1920's motivated all the major and a few minor medium-priced carmakers to develop and field upscale model series to take advantage of that trend. That some arrived on or after the economic house-of-cards fell was a matter of unfortunate timing.
  22. Breaking down the percentages of 1957 Lincolns by body style results as follows: 2dr hardtops: 44.3% 4dr hardtops: 30.8% 4dr sedans...: 16.0% 2dr convertibles: 8.9% Of the model series, Capri and Premiere, the latter though more expensive was the more popular at 85.5%. Among all model, the Capri 4dr hardtop sold the least at just 1,451 cars. On a personal note: as a car-crazed youth in the late 1950's/early 1960's, every trip passing by Arkport Motors Lincoln-Mercury, Arkport, NY required a stop-in for me to check out the new and used Lincolns. Being a "Ford family" then, Lincoln was the best. Imagine how crestfallen I was when I discovered Lincoln Capris such as this car still came with crank windows...just like our plain jane Ford! They were henceforth known as "crank-window Capris" to this discerning youth...
  23. For Sale: 1967 Lincoln Continental Convertible - $49,500 - Colorado Springs, CO Gorgeous '67 Lincoln Continental Convertible - cars & trucks - by... (craigslist.org) Seller's Description: Stunning '67 Lincoln Continental Convertible in great shape, ready for final restoration touches. This is the classic '67 design with suicide doors and Oxblood leather interior. Interior is almost flawless, convertible top works, car is very complete with almost all trim intact, body is straight with no apparent repairs, parts look original, rebuilt fuel pump, brakes work great, new tires, paint in good shape and looks original, almost completely rust-free, car has been garaged most of its life. Mileage in not guaranteed but it is the opinion of two mechanics and the detailer that the odometer has never rolled over. This is a VERY nice car that just needs just basic mechanical restoration: some rubber parts need to be replaced, engine needs to be resealed (minor leaks expected for a car of this age), needs to be updated, some minor electrical issues, etc. Car starts and runs, the steering is a bit loose, but again, this car is in overall excellent shape, just needs a bit more spit and polish to take it to show car level. Just check the pics and see for yourself! More videos available on request. Car belonged to my father-in-law who kept it garaged for most of its life. odometer: 26394 Watch a full video of the car here: Contact: no phone listed Copy and paste in your email: 8d3f8fd3133c3609af7a82d67311498c@sale.craigslist.org I have no personal interest or stake in the eventual sale of this For Sale: 1967 Lincoln Continental Convertible - $49,500 - Colorado Springs, CO The Standard Catalog of American Cars, 1946-1975, Edited by John Gunnell states 2,276 1967 Lincoln Continental Convertible built.
  24. It's "Dream Car Design" at its most extravagantly outrageous! The most succinct quote ever applied to the styling of this period: "The pleasant insanity of innocent excess!"
  25. AJ: These 'deposits' of project cars nearly always include a few 'rare minerals' such as the eight-cylinder Presidents, albeit also usually in dire need of restoration. Most of the late model ruck should have been allowed to process through the norm attrition cycle without cluttering up and taking space longer than it would have anyway. Dearly hope those late 1920's President FA and FH plus the 1940's President Land Cruisers find good conservators. No need to worry about the Coupe Express pick-ups, they're always in demand, regardless of how rough. Steve
