Selecting a 1920's car for enjoyable use requires understanding the roadability engineered into that car to meet the driving standards of that era. Roads were poorer then; speeds were typically between 30-40 mph. Long stroke, babbitt-bearing engines weren't designed for sustained higher speeds as we have now. Cars were geared for low-end acceleration and climbing, with occasional burst of higher speeds. Until four-wheel brakes became the norm in the late 1920's, stopping capability depended upon the driver's ability to double-clutch and downshift non-synchronized transmission gears and plenty of space.... plus, leg strength... The 1923 Nash Four you are considering has a 178.9 ci, 36hp engine. It is very long stroke: 3 3/8" bore X 5.0" stroke, the final drive ratio: 4.89:1. Not to put you off this particular car, but I recommend you look at the specifications of a variety of 1920's makes and models to arrive at a car which you will find both safe and satisfying to drive. The market demand for 1920's cars is soft in general, meaning there are many good cars to selective from. You can afford to be selective to get the best car that will meet your interests and needs. This is an upper series 2103 Clipper Super touring sedan on the 127" wb with the nine-main-bearing 356 ci straight eight. Production for the 2103 which also included the two-door fastback club sedan was 4,924 with no breakdown on the numbers of each body style. These have Classic status in the CCCA.

Overpriced now but eventually reality will set in, patience, the price will drop. It might take a while, but after his better half gets sick of having "that old junky Dodge" in the driveway.

The '40 Continental cabriolet is listed as 3615 lbs; 1941: 3860; 1942: 4020; 1946: 4090; 1947-'48: 4135. The 292 ci V-12 rated at 120 hp @ 3600, 214 ft/lbs @ 1600 rpm. The bore was increased .062 for 1942, 1946-part of 1947 model year to 305 ci, 235 ft/lbs @ 1800 rpm. The 305 V-12 was even more problematic, reverted to 292 ci for the late years production. For comparison in the Continental's pre-war $2,800-$3,200 price segment: 1940-'42 Packard 160 & 180 356 ci straight eight: 160 hp @ 3500, 292 ft/lbs @1800 rpm. 1940-'42 Cadillac: 60 Special, Series 72 & 75, 346 ci V8: 135-150 hp @ 3400 rpm, 283 ft/lbs @ 1700 rpm 1940-'42 Chrysler New Yorker & Crown Imperial: 323 ci straight eight, 140 hp @ 3600 hp, 260 ft/lbs @ 1600 rpm Continentals look sleek and elegant, but their V-12 was woefully underpowered for the weight it had to move.
