  1. AJ: This '40 Continental looks the way they did when they showed up at early LCOC meets in the 1950's-early 1960's. Check The Lincoln Continental by OCee Ritch, Copyright 1963 and vintage photos in the club publication "Continental Comments". Chromed spare tire covers, rear wheelhouses modified to a full-open or partially open configuration as this car, 'nosed' removal of prow trim. Most typically they had the smoky, under-powered, disappointing H-Series V-12 replaced by an OHV Olds or Cadillac V8 or hopped-up Mercury flathead V8. Interiors were reupholstered in shiny vinyl when the original leather and whipcord went bad. The tops replaced with poor-fitting pinpoint vinyl with wide plastic rear windows. The bodies for the 350 cabriolets and 54 coupes for 1940 were hand-built by long-time Lincoln body craftsmen from modified Zephyr stamping plus panel-beating forms in the old Lincoln K body shops as no volume dies were yet available. Low volume dies were built before the 1941 models enter production but still required a good deal of handwork to build, still a labor-intensive operation when that was still possible. Your dad's distaste for the H-Series V-12 Continentals ruining Caravans with far more capable, roadable Classics is well founded. Be thankful your Great Race experience wasn't in one! Steve PS: But yes, it is a lovely design!
  2. Ron42Dodge: AJ, for his first car, had a '49 Plymouth P-18 two door Club Coupe which has the vertical B-pillar and the same body proportions as the four-door sedan, not the 1946-First Series 1949 Plymouth P-15 Special Deluxe Club Coupe with its angled B-pillar and close-coupled proportions. The former is the very definition of frumpy and dumpy, the latter the most attractive model other than the convertible and station wagon. Why designers did that to the 1949-'52 Plymouth two door club coupes when the DeSoto/Dodge/Chryslers got a continuation of the prior Club Coupe configuration is a mystery. The 3-passenger Plymouth business coupes have the cache because of their funky proportions. All the 1942 Mopars got interesting frontal styling, the DeSoto the most Streamline Moderne followed by the Chrysler. Dodge is the stateliest and elegant, the Plymouth rich and impressive for a low-priced car. Of that 1941-First Series 1949 body series, the most attractive for me are the four-window town sedans which only Dodge offered postwar. The town sedan body style was developed in response to the highly successful 1940 GM Torpedo C-Body which swept the industry as the time, only Ford didn't respond. By the production numbers, Mopar buyers weren't as style conscious, resisted paying the additional $50-$60 more for the town sedan over the six-window sedans. My ideals would be a fully equipped 1941 Chrysler Crown Imperial C-30 Special Town Sedan or a 1942 Chrysler New Yorker Highlander town sedan with the blue-green plaid interior or a 1942 DeSoto Custom Town Sedan with the Fifth Avenue interior option. Don't ask for much, do I? Steve
  3. There are a few pictures of a stripped-to-the-shell 1942 or 1946-'48 Lincoln club coupe mixed in. If this is legitimate, it's a great opportunity to get a Super Eight 160 touring sedan. This 1803 model shares the same body and 127" wb chassis with the 120 but has the nine-main-bearing 356 ci straight eight and more luxurious interior.
  4. Jeff: You are allowed to have more than one '40's Chrysler New Yorker to enjoy... Steve

  8. Not three miles from here, a yellow and white '60 Thunderbird hardtop sets at a fellow's body repair shop. At a distance the car looks nice but take a peek in the front wheel wells and see there is no ends left of the box units! Even worse when one gets down and looks underneath at it in detail. The car could contribute nice chrome, a good interior and glass to a solid Western body but as it sets its a total loss.
  9. 1958-'66 Unibody Thunderbirds are another FoMoCo series to check carefully for structural rust damage. Once the box units open up from rust, it's nearly impossible and hideously costly to repair.

  11. This 1970 AMC Ambassador commercial with a young Robert De Niro. It's given me two great lines spoken by the mother to use anytime friends or family get a new car: "Joey! You need such an expensive car?!? and "Joey! So fancy!!!"
  12. The 1941 110 instrument panel is mahogany finish with the center panel a tan plastic which being susceptible to sun damage warps badly. This one appears better than most...
  13. For Sale: 1965 Mercury Montclair Marauder 2dr Hardtop - $8,900 - Eagle, ID 1965 Mercury Montclair Marauder - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle... (craigslist.org) Seller's Description: PRIMARILY LOOKING FOR TRADES for 70s or older domestic cars.I've owned this car for just over three years. It has a newer battery, one-wire alternator, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, ignition coil, and a recently rebuilt Edelbrock carburetor. Runs and drives well. I repainted it last fall in its original color in single stage acrylic enamel (The roof was not originally white). Not a show car by any means, but it presents well for a driver. It's powered by a 300-horse 390 Z-Code engine and a Merc-O-Matic 3-speed transmission. I believe the rear gears are 2.76. The engine was likely either rebuilt or replaced with a 1966 or later unit given it's blue (The correct color for 1965 is orange). There's nothing beyond minor surface rust anywhere on the vehicle. The clock doesn't work (Do they ever?), and the temp gauge normally doesn't budge from "cold." The front driver's seat has some tears, but the back seat and headliner are near perfect. Could use new springs in the rear and a lower ball joint on passenger side (Boot is cracked). There are a couple blemishes on the inside of the windshield from where a glued rearview mirror broke off (It's on now), and I believe there's a moderate exhaust leak coming from the passenger side manifold. 14. Bloo: I'd bet you'd enjoy this '41 Packard 110 business coupe once you had it sorted and dependable. The six is 245 ci, 100hp @ 3200rpm but more important 195 ft/lbs @ 1200rpm torque in a 3200 lbs car. Parts and service support and advice is excellent from multiple sources. Steve

  17. This poor '38 60 Special is just another worthwhile pre-war car condemned to become a resto-rod because of escalating restoration costs and ready availability of the same series in fine condition for less than the cost of restoring this example.
