  2. I would be interested to see the cowl extensions they had to attach to each side to accommodate the wraparound windshield as well as how the vertical chromed support were done. The tops of the doors where they had to fit closely to those wraparound windshield cowl extensions must have been a real chore to build. GM prototype shops had some of the best metalworkers in the business then. Come to think of it, compared to the complex metalwork on the Cadillac Eldorado and Olds 98 Fiesta wraparound windshield cowl and doors, the 'chopped' windshield on the Buick Roadmaster Skylarks must have been child's play.
  3. Yes, every 1958 Packard was a slight restyle of a 1958 Studebaker President. They received all the styling detail "benefits' bestowed upon those plus the Packard-specific styling highlights such as the 'Electrolux' frontal treatment and the holdover 1956 Packard Clipper taillights grafted into the rear fender ends. Plus, those swept, abbreviated tail fins inspired by the 1957 'Sweep-Wing" Dodges.
  4. The book Seventy Years of Buick by George H. Dammann states that Buick built for export of the 1935 Series 90 7-passenger sedan 42 cars and for the Series 90L limousine 105 cars. These were for worldwide markets. Also, 160 Series 90 chassis were exported. Typical industry export operations for higher-priced, lower-volume makes and models such as the Buick Series 90 were CKD: crated, knocked down, with the completely assembled car secured to the crate base with wheels and bumpers secured separately to save space then fully enclosed for safe shipping. For countries with manufacturing facilities, crates packed with completed major components were shipped for final assembly at those locations. Dependent upon local content laws, many had bodies built by the country's coachbuilders as well as ancillary smaller parts. American cars were in demand throughout the world in the pre-WWII era.
  5. Restorer32: While you are proceeding through the restoration process, would you please take the time to photograph and show us how the custom body work was done to change the Series 62 shell into the Eldorado shell. I recall examining a rough 1953 Eldorado at Hershey years ago where some of the lead work and other modifications could be seen. Thanks. Steve
  6. Here is a better look at two images, which now that I'm back from vacation, I can do again:
  7. Hello Phil: This is published in a 1939 Chilton Flat Rate manual, for Buick, Series 34-90 - 1934 and 35-90 - 1935 - 8 Cylinder "Car Serial Number Located: Right frame side rail just ahead of front shock absorber." Hope this helps, interesting car you have there. Steve

  10. For Sale: 1958 Studebaker President 2dr Hardtop, Rare, Ambitious Project - $3,500 - Estancia, NM 1958 Studebaker President - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle... (craigslist.org) Seller's Description: 1958 Studebaker President 2 door hardtop low production top of line only 1171 produced, missing title after sitting many years, very original with 289 V8 engine automatic transmission, power steering power brakes, very very rust free straight located near Albuquerque New Mexico. Note: As noted by the seller, these are a "low production top of line only 1171 produced" model, the last year for the President. The J-Body designated; sedan series-based two door hardtop was new for 1958. The Commander (2,555), President (1,171) and Packard (675) comprised approximately 8.2% of overall sales. Although the initial tooling costs were likely not recouped this first year, with modifications, the tooling served as the basis for the Lark hardtops and convertible. Although they're scarce with a low survival rate, few of these are restored even in the Studebaker Drivers Club, representing a unique opportunity for those who seek out the unusual.
  11. TAKerry: It takes an open minded to embrace the 1958 Packard styling. They truly are an acquired taste, but then again, so are most 1958 model cars from all makers. My dirty-little-pleasure I have to admit is I love the 1958 Lincoln and Continental styling! But that taste was formed as a six-eight-year-old kid when the cars were new...the 1958 Packard taste came later when I finally became aware of them. Steve
  12. The interest in and survival rate of Model T Fords compared to its contemporaries is not only a matter of the sheer numbers which were manufactured initiallly but also the aftermarket parts support widely available even decades after the last Model T's rolled off the assembly line. If I recall correctly, Ford Motor Company was still producing replacement parts for Model T's up to the advent of WWII. Aftermarket parts suppliers were always a factor, became even more so with the rise of car collecting. A further contributing factor was the most popular Model T's body styles were largely "all-steel" construction with only minor, easy-to-replace wood whereas composite metal-over-wood frame remained the body construction method for GM cars into the mid-late 1930's.
  13. Easily the best version of the unfortunate Marlin. The real prize of the 1967 AMC Ambassador line is the convertible: clean, sleek, elegant, so un-Rambler-like you almost forget it's an AMC product.
  14. The rational for the 1957-'58 'South Bend' Packards was to present something to keep the Packard name on the market to not only satisfy dealer contracts but also to bridge to a time when an all-new Packard for its traditional segment might be developed. Once a make name was withdrawn from the market, it was nearly impossible to revive it with any long-term success. After the relative satisfactory response to the 1957 Clipper Town Sedan and Country Sedan, which met the sales projects of between 4K and 6K units, continuing with the existing platform was the only option available. It was still felt that something more had to be presented for 1958 to separate the Packard image from the Studebakers on which they were obviously based. Dominant styling trends of the tail fins and quad headlights were the two major features that management decided were an absolute must-have to be competitive. Trouble was, Studebaker-Packard was financially broke, could only afford tacked-on tail fins and pods to accommodate the quad headlights, no major tooling was affordable. The Joint Agreement with Curtice-Wright brought with it management 'advice' from C-W President Roy Hurley, who was primarily interested in the defense contracts and facilities which it could glean from S-P's carcass for enough money to survive through 1958 until the compact could be developed. It was a touch-and-go situation all through that year. But, in an effort to curry favor with their new boss, Styling developed a custom for him based on the Golden Hawk which included styling features Mr. Hurley had seen on a Ferrari while touring the European auto shows. Affectionately called the "Hurley Hawk" with its wide, low, "Electrolux' vacuum grille treatment, fins and other styling gimmicks, it not only satisfied his ego to have a unique personal custom but inspired the idea that that grille treatment would be prefect for the other 1958 Packard models. This station wagon display all of the unfortunate hallmarks of that final episode of Packard history.

  16. Congratulations on your latest Cole acquisition, thanks for sharing the good news and photos.
  17. TGvest: All good advice you've received so far. For what it's worth, never having owned one myself, still I would recommend considering a 1960's Mercedes-Benz 250SE or 280SE convertible. For occasional weekend touring, the luxury, fine craftsmanship, ride and additional space would be appreciated. Whatever your ultimate choice, buy the best car you can find for the price, and enjoy it. Good luck with your search and acquisition. Steve
  18. Be very careful of these regarding rust damage. Basically, a restyled 1958 Studebaker President with all the attendant rust issues those cars have in spades. Flat black primer hides a lot of problems...
  19. Continentals remained so popular after the end of the 1948 production, according to an N.A.D.A Used Car Guide for April 1953, the pre-war models still were retail priced over $200 comparable to the '40 Cadillac 62 convertible. Cadillac convertibles were the 'gold standard' for used luxury cars both pre and postwar. Continental retail prices were often more than twice the concurrent Zephyr convertibles. For 1953, a five-year-old Continental cabriolet, ($4746 new) in April 1953 still commanded $1195 retail. From comparable contemporaries: a 1948 Chrysler Town & Country convertible ($3395 new) was $1045; a Packard Super Eight convertible ($3250 new) priced $1145; the Custom Eight convertible ($4295 new) only $1125; while the 'gold standard' choice 1948 Cadillac 62 convertible ($3442 new) was $1755 retail. While the Continental and Packard Custom Eight suffered the worse depreciation, only the Continental remained popular and in demand thereafter. As a teenager, I was quite smitten with the 1940's Lincoln Continentals, tracked those that appeared for sale in the Buffalo Evening News "Antiques and Classics" column during the 1960's. While I was impressed with the idea of a V-12, my father who was familiar with the deficits that beset the H-Series V-12 Lincoln Zephyrs and Continentals began my education about those cars. Soon, I noticed most of the used Continentals listed were advertised with Olds or Cadillac OHV V8 powerplants. Pursuing a 'well-used' 1940 Lincoln Continental cabriolet last used by a University of Buffalo student with an Olds engine, the knowledgeable owner filled me in on the details of why the engine swaps were so common. Gentlemen, you are welcome to the dissertations. I hope they give context to these cars that we discuss. The AACA Forums are a great resource daily to fill out one's automotive history knowledge and perspective on specific makes and models, occasionally share what we've learned.
  20. At the time the Lincoln-Zephyr was being developed, the luxury Lincoln K's were V-12's exclusively. The Ford V8 was a major sales element in its success, ergo the Lincoln-Zephyr would have a V-12 because that is what was basic to the make. Unhappily, the basic engine architecture was little more than a Ford flathead V8 with four cylinders added. It was a relatively small bore 2.75 X short stroke 3.75 engine in an era of larger bore/long stroke engines that generated plenty of torque at low rpms. Buyers in that price segment were used to 'lugging' their long-stroke engines using the generous torque to motivate the car without shifting as much in heavy traffic. The L-Z V-12 needed to be kept revved up to generate enough torque, did not tolerate lugging well. The worst design drawbacks were the exhaust ports through the block to the lower outsides as was Ford flathead V8 practice causing hot spots in adjacent cylinder walls and transferring huge amounts of exhaust heat into the cooling system. The fan was mounted on the front of the crankshaft, too low to affective cool the engine under adverse conditions. The low, horizontal grilles configuration of the 1938 Lincoln-Zephyr came about as a partial solution to the cooling problems. That the change caused a styling sensation that swept the industry to low, horizontal grilles within a few seasons was simply a serendipitous result.
