  1. I prefer to use the Rust-Oleum Professional Primer, followed by the Rust-Oleum Professional High Performance Enamel Spray both provide Great Adherence and coverage and not to mention the easy spray nozzle !! Truly love the way it sprays evenly and consistently... Has become my first Choice in Spray/ Rattle Can Paint... Yeah it cost a little more, but well worth it !!
  2. That's a great story, and we thank them all for their duty and service !! My grandfather drove supply trucks during WWII himself, spent a lot of time over in Guam Found these War Department Technical Manuals per the info you are talking about: Autocar Model U-7114T 4-5 Ton 4x4 dated 21 March 1944 337pgs Semitrailer 6-Ton Payload, Fuel Tank 2,000 gallon dated 25 August 1944 Tells you basically everything you never wanted to know about the vehicle, maintenance, service, etc... Including Specs !! has some pictures of it with the top on it, sure it was still COLD in the winter, and like you said I am sure they felt like they were driving around like a moving target !! 4,000 gallons of fuel... CRAZY !! Also looks like somewhere they did make a CLOSED cab model. For TONS of pictures go to GOOGLE, click on IMAGES and then in the search just type "Autocar Model U-7144T" to narrow it down put in "Autocar Model U-7144T Fuel Tanker" Hope this helps out some . . .
  3. In my work of restoring my 1929 4dr Sedan I have gotten a lot of help from fellow members here, I am much appreciative for all the advice and assistance. I am compiling information for my Documentation I am doing. Mainly so that if/ when I have to do anything again I can reference my notes and answer the questions, BUT more so that I can publish and relay this information to fellow members in need. I am working on torque numbers for various components. I do understand that back in 1929 torque specs were not common if used at all. I am trying to be practical in todays mechanical nature to tighten things down properly and to NOT over tighten. So these numbers I say are more of a GUIDELINE in lieu of being LAW. Powertrain Components Piston Pin Bolt: 25 - 30 ft-lb Main Bearing: 75 - 80 ft-lb Rod Bearing: 25 - 35 ft-lb Oil Pan Bolts (Corner): 12 1/2 - 15 ft-lb Oil Pan Bolts (Rail): 6 - 7 1/2 ft-lb Timing Gear Cover: 6 - 8 ft-lb Cylinder Head Bolt: 60 - 70 ft-lb Rocker Arm Bolt: 25 - 30 ft-lb Spark Plug: 20 - 25 ft-lb Flywheel Bolt: 50 - 60 ft-lb Wheels Jaxon Bolts: __ - __ ft-lb Lug Nuts: __ - __ ft-lb Transmission Components I have not gotten any info in regards to Transmission Portions, but will gladly accept the info. Please look this list over and provide feedback, corrections, recommendations... This information has been compiled from information I have gathered over the last few years in working on my car.
  4. Will not miss most of them, did not know some of them existed... so many options out there not enough buyers to make them all
  5. When dropping of our youngest to school the other morning, I saw a flyer on the wall for The Great Race 2014, it caught my attention as to WHY this was posted in the local Elementary School. In reading the poster it was because the Great Race 2014 is stopping in our town on June 24 !! Which is really Cool I am planning to take the day off so that I can venture down and catch some of these guys coming in and get some pictures. Looking at the website Great Race there are a lot of really nice cars in the event. Just wondering if any of you guys ever competed or have seen them come through your town ?? I think it is an opportunity to capitalize on and take in the sites . . .

  9. This is something I have been debating and considering on my 1929 Chevrolet as well, granted I have not gotten to the interior yet. I am GREATLY CONSIDERING installing seat belts for the safety factor alone. I am not worried about my driving, just the rest of the fools out there on the road around me.
  10. Well got my Hub Puller in last night !! Will post up some picts of what I got. It is stamped as a Hunt brand, anyone ever heard of them. This thing came in an old metal case, weighs a ton. In excellent condition and will long outlast me and the next 12 owners
  11. Looks like everyone has their way, seems most use a large hub puller or drum puller. I am going to see if I can rent one from the local parts store before I buy one to make sure i buy what i truly need. How do you reinstall the brake drum and make sure it is secure and on all the way ?? Does it have to be pressed on or just slid on then tighten up and pinned ?? Answer: Replacing the drum is easy. Push it on with the brakes loose and tighten the castle nut and replace the cotter pin. I would look into the torques specs before I tightened it.
  12. Looking at my Rear Brakes, was trying to figure out how to get the drum off. I have removed the cotter pin & Castle Nut off the shaft. Thought that the Drum would just slide off, but was wrong. Did Some homework and it seems that the proper way to remove the rear drum is by using a Really Big & Heavy Duty Gear/ Pulley Puller ?? How have you guys done it, and what is the Best/ Safest way to do this, with OUT damaging the drum or anything on the Rear Axle ??
  13. Now Looking at the location of the Proportioner as well and the End Linkages of the Cross shafts and front / rear linkages. Here is a picture of the Proportioner in position using the Brake Gauge/ Tool to set the pin hole at approximately 35 deg. Proportioner Set-up, now with this setup here is what the crossshaft linkages look like Cross shaft end linkages The front is to the left, and linkages slightly angled to the front, where the rear is more angled to the rear at a steeper angle. Here is a shot of the front linkage Front Linkage it is almost straight up and down, slight angle towards the front. Then here is the rear linkage Rear Linkage Rear of 1929 is to the left, Linkage is slightly angled towards the rear. hard to get a side shot of this one since it is in a tight spot behind running board. Trying to figure out if this is correct or even in the ball park. Seems with this setup I can connect all the linkages back up after the brakes are set and the stops and adjustments are made.
  14. Been working with a few guys from the VCCA (Thanks NC Chip & Andys29) on my brake issue, one issue that NC Chip has pointed out was that the rear Bracket that mounts (riveted) to the Flange seems to be out of place. This varies from his that seems to be pretty Flat against the flange ?!?
  15. Some picts of the New Springs & Gear Got New Clevis Pins, Cotter Pins, Springs for front and rear, and a New Clutch Return Spring...
  16. Ok, so I should remove the rope seal from the block & bearing cap. May be the reason WHY the oil is running out the back. Oil can not drain fast enough so it is seeping and over flowing out the back of the bearing into the flywheel cover. This would be the Flange/ Slinger ?? Assume whomever redid the engine did what they thought was correct, not period correct... From my reading looks like there was NO Seal on the rear till about 1940 or so. Basically oil is flung around the flinger in the groove, and then runs to the bottom of the groove, and drains down the hole and out the front past the ball. That is unless the ball is stuck or is blocking the path when on incline.

  19. Always think they are worth the weight in Gold I have been a member with AAA for 17+ Years Now, Since I started Driving on my Own, have had to use it a few times for a tow, jump, etc... Also is nice to have for the Hotel Discounts, as well as other perks I have used over the years !! Since getting my 1929 about 2 years ago I have looked into using/ getting Additional coverage just for the 1929 (i.e. Hagerty's). A Guy I work with has the coverage on his Corvette, plus has the package that covers his daily drivers. Has had to use it a few times, and has NO COMPLAINTS, said they always have been helpful and considerate. Has thought about changing to other plans offered via his insurance company and other mailings, but sticks with them because of the service he KNOWS he WILL GET !!
