  1. Thanks to all for the comments - don't seem to have a consensus one way or the other here. Think I will hold off filling up till we have more views.
  2. I am in North Texas, and the nearest "real gas" I have found from prior web searches is about 60 miles away, so just under a half tank round trip. I am interested in the leaded gas with no ethanol due to the less damaging effects on an older engine - just don't want to create worse new problems by using higher octane gasoline.
  3. I have found a source for aviation gas that I think is 96-100 octane (with lead but no ethanol) to put in my '39 Buick. My question is, before I do this will I need to adjust the carb to accomodate the change from regular (86 octane) pump gas to 96-100 octane? If just rich/lean adjustment is required and not changing jets, I can handle it, but what should I expect and should I do it? Thanks,

    Keys

Mark, any idea when they introduced the locking steering column? I was really surprised when I found it on the '39 model.

    Keys

My '39 Business Coupe has only one key - fits ignition, doors, trunk and glove compartment. I do have a locking GM gas cap that is a different key though.
  6. Locate the fuel sender wire in the trunk - comes in through the floor below the driver side tail light. Uncouple the connector and the fuel gauge should read full with the ignition on. Now, touch the wire going to the fuel gauge to ground and the gauge should read empty with the ignition on. If not you probably have a wiring problem or a bad fuel gauge. Copy and paste this into Google: chevelleengineer.home.comcast.net/~chevelleengineer/fuelgage.htm for tips on how to diagnose the cause of your fuel gauge problem. Let us know what you find is the problem, and good luck.
  7. I'm planning to attend - hope to see you there! John V.
  8. On the instructions it states that the underside "dull green finish has been baked on" and further "should remain green since this has been scientifically determined as the color which absorbs the maximum amount of light .....and greatest protection from sun glare". I am going to check with Sherwin-Williams auto paint store to see if they can match it in a flat product. Since there is enough of the color on the panels that was under the center section that is not faded, I suspect they can match it. Thanks for the info on the primer, I will mention that as a option if they don't have something that appears correct. John V.
  9. Does anyone know the actual name of the flat/dull green color on the underside of Fulton Sun Shields? Just got a visor that I am going to restore and install on '39 Buick and the underside needs repainting. Thanks,

    Gas Prices

$3.49 this morning for 87 octane at my local North Dallas station.
  11. grhouse: Just got on Bobs and this is what he has for '39 model Buicks - Distributor tune-up kit (cap, rotor, points & condenser) for $29, Plug wires (yellow laqured cloth covered) $42.00 Plugs (AC-R45) $2.75 ea. x 8 = $22.00 Total $93.00 Good luck and let us know what you end up getting.
  12. grhouse, welcome to the "club" - lots of '39 owners here to help you along. We like photos, so post some of your '39 when you get a chance. I found correct plugs at NAPA, but Bobs Automobilia (www.bobsautomobilia.com) also has all the components for your tune-up. On the air cleaner, do you have the heavy duty cleaner with the oil pan underneath, or just the canister with the copper foil? Either way, you rinse it good with kerosene and re-oil the foil - then a pint in the oil pan if it is the heavy duty cleaner. Again, welcome to the group.
  13. Wayne, I have had the '39 Coupe for 2 1/2 years and have put just under 5,000 fun miles on it. The upcoming oil change will be the third since I got the car. John V.
  14. I am glad this came up because I have not seen anything in my '38 or '39 Shop Manual about this screen. I did find something in the Owners Manual - kind of a one liner and easy to miss (and I have obviously missed it several times). I haven't checked to see if I have one of these, but will do soon since it is almost time for my next oil change. It will be interesting to see if there is one in there since I have a factory installed oil filter and heavy duty air cleaner. Thanks to all who have contributed to my continuing education.
  15. I need to buy a Parts/Interchange book for 1939 Buick - can anyone suggest the best one and where to locate it? I have looked at Bishko Boooks, Bob's, CARS and a few other sites on-line, but can't tell enough about them to know what's good and what's a waste of money. Thanks.
  16. I'm guessing cowl vent actuator handle and knob. Haven' a clue for what year, make or model.
  17. Thanks all, I will give Ann Bell a call and also check with Mr. Boyer.
  18. Does anyone reproduce or sell NOS radio channel select buttons that you know of? I am talking about the clear plastic piece that fits over the actual channel select mechanism. Thanks,
  19. Here is a link where you can get the specs on all your favorite vintage and antique cars: Classic Car Database, Specifications, Dealers, Parts and Services for Antique Cars, Classic Cars, Vintage Cars and Muscle Cars Have fun checking it out.
  20. Merry Christmas and I hope everyone is enjoying the season!
  21. Mike, you can see this car listed on eBay as well. There are more photos and starting bid is $20,000.
  22. I replaced the manifold gaskets on my '39 Special a couple of months ago and replaced several of the studs that the nuts were frozen on and came out of the block. Found them at my local O'Reilly Auto Parts store. They also had the gaskets I needed. Cheers,
  23. Apparently e-bay was notified and pulled the listing - WAY-TO-GO on catching this scam MrEarl!
  24. Does Mr.Earl know about this listing on ebay....? 1954Buick Riviera Not mine, but noticed it this morning.
