Pete, My '39 Business Coupe has a space of about an inch both at the front and rear of the runningboards. Bear in mind the rear of my originals are pretty ragged, but the fronts are rolled over and very finished looking, so I am sure that is the original look. John V. Carrollton, TX
The shop manual says for a Series 40 it is a Delco-Remy Model 1107005. Manual also says all '39 starting motors were equipped with a new pinion gear and clutch assembly which is not interchangeable with past models. John V.
I just checked The Filling Station www.fillingstation.com - they have Chevy tanks all around '39, but might check them to see if they can get one for '39. Good luck, John V.
I looked in the trunk and the upper fastener appears to be through the cup like spacer turned upside down so it is thicker, and the lower one is through a washer. Hope this does you some good, but if not, let me know. John
Airbrush, there should be a plate with an arm going to both sides that latch the trunk lid down that takes up the space. Here is a copy of the section in the Fisher body manual. Hope this was the answer you were seeking. John V. 1939 & 1940 Body By Fisher Service & Construction
That would be the turn signal switch - '39 was first year for Buick turn signals (on rear only). The lenses on either side of the emblem in the middle of the trunk lid are the turn signals. John:D
The engine number is from '40 - starting number was 5-3786214, and ending number was 5-4074858. I don't have any idea on the date of manufacture of the frame or engine to know if they were original to each other. You might check on Team Buick site www.teambuick.com and contact Dave Corbin who is the keeper of the production date records. He is also able to decipher the trim codes. Good Luck, John V.
Allan, Thanks for the link and the information contained there-in, I do appreciate it. I need to pull the two left lenses I have and see if either is correct, then start the search. I also need to get the reflectors reworked, and fortunately there has been a thread about that very recently. Thanks again, John
I am in search of the part numbers for '39 Special headlight lenses. I have two left lenses and they are different and I want to search for the correct lenses but don't know the part numbers of correct left or right. If anyone with a parts book could check and respond, I would really appreciate it. Thanks, John
Grant, you and your dad have done a great job on this car, just wish I could see it in person. You are obviously proud of the end result, as well you should be. Congrats, John V.
Marty, here is a link that says there were 669 of these. Classic Car Specifications, Engine, Wheelbase, production numbers, VIN numbers for Antique Cars, Classic Cars, Vintage Cars and Muscle Cars Hope that helps, John V.
I'm with Danny, I would not trust tires that old if I was going more than a few blocks, and only then at very slow speed. Looking forward to progress reports as you get into the project. John V.
