71gsx455-4spd
OK, finally received the info from the PoP for the '65 Riviera I purchased recently. The car is an LX code with a VIN match and has a BT tranny in it, indicating 1 of the 454 non-Gran Sport DQ Rivs. It does sport Grans Sport badging, however, which could obviously have been added. So, here's what's on the plate: X247 494475H9xxxxxT377 FB 85917TT628 ZC60 A31 K30 U64 From what I gather:X=LX engine code, 247=date codeT=BT trans (non-GS), 377=date codeTT=Champagne Mist628= Custom Black Vinyl interiorZ= ?????C60=A/CA31=Power WindowsK30=Cruise ControlU64 (probably U69?)= Am-FM Radio with power antennaFB= Flint85917= Fisher Body Number So, I think I have most of that correct and it would appear the car is a LX car with GS emblems added after birth. I was thinking the A8 or A9 code would have been on the plate definitively answering whether the car is a LX Riv or an LX GS? Any help or corrections to the above would be most appreciated! Thanks, Ken
RivNut
To confirm this, find the Engine Serial Number on the block and compare it to the VIN on the body: they should match. Ed

RivNut
Flint build dates are 1 = Jan, 2 = Feb, etc. Weeks are A,B,C for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. on the data plate. The engine serial number is located on the machined surface where the valley cover sits. At the front, on the right, behind the water crossover manifold. 1965rivgs
Z = built January, 1965 As usual, good info Sean.Ken, I found a picture of your car from the mid eighties (1986?) ROA meet in Indy. Joe is posing in the pic and the side of the driver`s front fender is clearly shown. If you want a copy of the pic email me directly Tom

Rivman
I don't have the PoP for my '65 LX but I do have a picture of the FB data plate, and the trans plate, they show the build date and might possibly help with some of the numbers you're looking for? Mine has LX 341 on the block65T 404 on the transFB 132856 on the body tag It was built 02D so the numbers seem to match-up pretty close. However I do have the PoP for my '65 GS and it "does not" show anything on it that it was built as a GS, but all numbers that I have verified so far do match. 1965rivgs
Ken, Here is a pic of your car at the `86 ROA meet at Indy. Your car is not in the center of the pic but on the left, The owner Joe Ottacka is saluting me as I took the pic. The Gran Sport emblem is clearly visible on the drivers front fender. BTW, the U64 code on your POP means your car was originally built with the AM radio with electric antenna. Hope the pic proves useful, Tom Mooney
71gsx455-4spd
Thank you for the responses! And Tom, thanks for the picture from 1986- very cool and the fender is obviously of interest. I will probably print it out and drop by Joe's house with the car. It certainly is interesting that it spent the last 25-years or so in Ohio, but was previously from a town one away from mine in Ct. As noted, it is a VIN match LX coded car. It was built in January per the Body Plate- good to know what the "Z" is.
Guest fuzz
That's an awesome story. As a newbie to this site who's just starting to restore my 65 Rivi GS it's nice to know there's a group of people as dedicated to the heritage of these cars! DualQuadDave
I have customer in LA with one of the 454 non-GS Riv's. Neat car, really rare. There are probably less than 100 still with their original matching #'s motors.
lrlforfun
OK Riviera People: I still am not feeling the love from matching numbers mythology. Again, I hope I represent the majority of people out there who don't care. A 65 Riv is still a 65 Riv ....even if it's just drug outta da river bed. if it were the best 64 in the Universe you still wouldn't want it. For the Corvette people, please tell than that it's still a Vette...even if it's a 6. Mitch
RivNut
IF the car is presented as a Gran Sport and for whatever reason the seller and buyer think that by being a Gran Sport it commands a premium price or if the buyer/seller of one of the 454 cars equipped with the A8 engine option that is not a Gran Sport and it thought of as rare and again commands a premium price, then numbers matching is probably something worth looking at. telriv
Pretty cool KEN!!!! Got something more rare than 1st. imagined. Cool driving it back from Pa. No problems at all & checking it out at my son house in the garage with the lift. Did swapping the R/rear brake shoes help with the pulling on initial braking??? Tom T.
