Looks nice but Florida car with no a/c? "Power windows, seats, cruise and locks". I don't see any of those options in the pictures. This guy isn't new to the game and he should get option details right.

Indeed a really nice unmolested condition car. Very low optioned. This one will be interesting to watch.

And yes - specialty classic car dealers are notorious for having errors in their listings. They got some of the more difficult details right but obviously didn't proof read the power accessories.

Being low optioned its not likely the car came with chrome wheels. A perspective buyer might want to verify what generation wheels are on the car. They may not be 65 wheels. The transition area from the lug nut out to the slot looks to abrupt perhaps??

You don't see many Verde Green with green brocade interiors.  I like it though.  Manual windows with a deluxe interior is not all that common either.  No cracks in the steering wheel is a big plus too.  Does anyone know what the second decal under the trunk lid is?  I also like the fact that the trunk compartment looks original.  As Ed states, the webbing in the wheels is the wrong color but that is an easy fix for the purist.  The price seems reasonable if it is as solid as it looks.

I am throwing out a some advice to anyone that might be interested in this car. PROCEED WITH CAUTION! This is the same outfit I bought my car from. All may not be as it seems. Pay for an inspection!  Pick your own inspector. He had offered to hook me up with an inspector.  I could spend an hour talking about the MISREPRESENTATION done with my car. Pictures and words can be very misleading. I read all this companies feedback, I talked to the owner, I looked at all the pictures, etc. I was too trusting and got burned. An expensive lesson for me. I love my car and am glad I have it. I have attached the e-bay listing for my car for people to compare it to this one. From the brief look I had seemed pretty cookie cutter. I would be happy to share my experience with this company and my car. Just PM me with your phone number and I would be happy to talk. Thanks.

I just went through the pictures from the eBay listing for your car.  You're right, it surely does look nice in the pictures.  I only found what I believe is one descrepency, that's the Buick emblem on the door panel.  Looks as if someone converted manual windows to power windows and put a plug in the hole for the old window crank.  That would be easy enough to prove if the original data plate is still intact.

 

Now for the $64,000 questioin.  What did you find that was not disclosed or misrepresented?

I remember your car when it was listed.  It is really nice looking.  It is obvious the seller uses the same language in his ads, he just cuts and pastes the changes but as you can see from the 65 ad, he missed a few options that aren't on the car.  It's too bad you had issues but glad you stuck with it and remained a Riviera owner!

I will give a listing of a few of the things that we have had to deal with. First of all the car was advertised as "restored". In my mind the term restored would mean that the car had been reconditioned to original condition, using parts that were correct for a 1963. I have had to replace several items on the car as they were not from a 63 but, from other years and not correct. I realize that there are different levels of restoration and I certainly did not think it had a high dollar restoration. I had conversations with the owner and he assured me that the car had had been gone over "top to bottom and "front to back". He indicated that he had spent a great deal of money to recondition the car which was why when we discussed price he did not have a lot of wiggle room. To me these phrases tend to make a person think that everything wrong had been righted. I had asked more than once for a list of what had been done to the car and never received, which in hindsight should have been a red flag. The troubles started the day after it was delivered.

 

1.) leaking radiator-later found to be 2/3 plugged and had to be replaced 2.) heater core leaking onto passenger side carpet-needed to be replaced. 3.) Muffler leaking from 4 separate holes and other exhaust leaks-entire exhaust needed to be replaced. 4.) the "ice cold" AC was not functioning and needed work when the radiator and heater core replaced. Of course it blew "ice cold" when we got it as it was January in Wisconsin. 5.) All chrome was removed from the car when it was painted. This could not be further from the truth, NOTHING was removed prior to painting. I have had to have rust removed and new paint in the wheel wheels, front bumper area and still have rust and paint to be dealt with on the trunk lid and under the tail light bezels. They did not even paint the lower areas of the car completely or properly. The front and rear quarter panels did not even have paint all the way to the bottom edge. The paint just stopped and the last 2-3 inches was old paint and/or surface rust. The rocker panels also needed to be repainted as they were lightly painted and the darker primer was evident underneath. Apparently the painter had had a back problem and could not bend down past a certain point. There are a couple of areas that had paint peel off when they removed the masking tape from the "chrome that had been removed" and were sloppily touched up. 6.) "dual state paint job". Which would imply base coat/clear coat, my body man assured me the paint was not 2 stage as he had fun blending true 2 stage into the previous paint job. 7.) The car had not seen a tune-up in probably 20 years. The old AC plugs were so bad I can't believe it ran. Wires, plugs, tune-up had to be done. 8.) "Pristine Buick factory road wheels" They were rusty and had places where chrome was gone completely. Had to replace the wheels. 9.) "newer whitewall radial tires" They date coded out as new in 1995 and of course had to be replaced. 10.) The "new" battery crapped out about a year after we got the car.

Apart from your misrepresentation with this dealer, I think you still own a pretty nice example of a '63 Riviera Bill.

I only noticed the Buick tri shield emblems that Ed mentioned, from an obvious power window conversion, and the cone style centre caps on the chrome wheels, which were not available in '63, but I'm sure you can add more discrepancies ?

I hope this does help prevent someone else from having my experience. Yes, I do have a pretty nice example of a 1963 Riviera and I thank you for the compliment but, it has taken a lot of money and countless hours of my own time and efforts to get it to the condition that I now believe fits the description that the dealer gave back then.

I have used the following individual for two classic car inspections. He is very qualified and is located in Southeast Florida very near to this car. He attends all the major auctions as well (Barrett Jackson, Mecum, etc.) and can preview and inspect any cars you might be interested in bidding on.

 

He charged me in the $350 range to do an inspection. That included over 300 pictures and a forensic inspection of all systems, chassis, etc. Highly recommended. He knows his stuff.

This car was presented for sale on the BCA forum a short time ago and I suspect sold to this dealer.

This is the green cloth custom interior which was cancelled part way thru the model year. As a result, in addition to the fact it probably wasnt selling, this and the white custom interior are the two most unusual. The condition of the seat material and bolsters under the material looks to be about as good as it gets. Notice the lack of collapse in the driver`s seat bun which results in an excellent look to the seat outside side panels? Most early Riv seats, even those which have been restored, dont look this good overall.

If someone wants to fly me down to Florida I`d be happy to inspect this car!

I sold this car to an individual in Chicago about a year ago, and I suspect that he traded it to this dealer for something else. In our discussions prior to purchase, he mentioned that he had done business with this dealer in Florida.

 

That said, it's really a nice car. I have nothing to gain or lose, but I was very pleased with this Riv and how nicely preserved it was. Drives very well, very smooth, and it appears to have been driven only a few miles since I sold it. It was repainted once about 20 years ago, but otherwise I believe it to be mostly original. It is a good car, I'd be happy to have it back. The only demerit was, as you guys note, that it doesn't have many options and the wood inserts are pretty faded. I do not know if the road wheels are original to the car but they were on the car when I acquired it last year.

I purchased this car after losing patience with my failed search for a nice original GS. Hope dealer from Ohio who sold this car a while back is correct in his assessment of it. I like the colors very much and after plenty of discussions with seller I pulled the trigger. Knew he had made an error in his description and that it was low featured with wrong wheels but it is very original. Still willing to own a well loved, unrestored mint 65 Riv GS.

One of the ROA's long time members has written a series of articles for the Riview about available options for each year.  There's records of how many of each color, and records of how many with each interior, but there's nothing that shows those kinds of numbers for combinations.  Sorry.

Hi Jeff,

  As Ed has stated, there are no records of combination of paint/interior trim production totals which tell us how many `65 Rivs were produced with your particular combination. We do know that of the 34,586 Rivieras produced in `65 2912 were painted Verde Green and of the 34,586 cars in total only 560  were built with the green custom cloth interior. BTW, the rarest interior option was the all vinyl white custom at 499 copies. Hope this helps,
