unimogjohn Posted October 29, 2011 Share Posted October 29, 2011 Picked up a box of odd parts. I was able to id most of them. These two have me stumped.The first is a rear tail light. Looks to be from the 60's.The second is an electrical part, stamped Ford on top. A switch or relay of some kind? Any help would be appreciated. Dave Mellor NJ Posted October 30, 2011 Share Posted October 30, 2011 As the name implies, a cutout cuts out the generator so it doesn't overcharge and ruin the battery. Some times you turn on the lights for high speed daylight driving. Years later they came out with the regulator which regulates, as the name implies. Dave Henderson Posted December 1, 2011 Share Posted December 1, 2011 (edited) The Ford generator cutout pictured doesn't regulate. It just "cuts out" (opens the cirrcuit) when the engine isn't running. Without it doing so, the generator would try to "motor" and would run the battery down (or worse) when the engine was off. With cars having a cutout, owners would often leave the headlights on while at speed on the open road to prevent overchargeing and boiling the water out of the battery. . They came in a yellow box, and have a hot-pinkish cast when lit. Lots of folks got stuck with huge supplies of them about 20 years ago; they look OK till they light up.
